"Reploids are not robots i have been called out on this in the past"
One of these days you will understand the concept of robots with sapience and free will. Today is not that day.

Man, I hate it when Reploids malfunction due to problems, then increase and become more.

Oh boy, Megaman Xtreme. This game has a very...fun translation, consisting of a slightly decent job and a huge helping of baaaaaaad translations and bad writing. That last bit may sound strange, but a lot of the awkward dialogue in the english version isn’t even in the Japanese script! So half of what looks like awkward machine translated dialogue in this game is actually written by people.

For a comparison:

Game Script:

Zero: It seems that they are… reproducing the fighting data of the past… X, your data is contained in the past data in the Mother Computer. And the one who brought you back from the data world is…

Not Terrible Translation:

Zero: It would seem they’re resurrecting past battle data. The place you slipped into was inside the Mother Computer’s past data. And then the one who brought you back out from inside that data was…

So this is a game I LP'd... last year? It was comparatively recent.

Normal mode is Chill Penguin/Flame Stag/Storm Eagle/Spark Mandrill, then the Sigma fortress stages.
"Hard" mode is Wheel Gator/Armor Armadillo/Magna Centipede/Trash Morph Moth, then the Sigma fortress stages. If you go straight from Normal to "Hard" mode, you retain the things you found in Normal, but if you start Hard Mode from the title screen you start from scratch.
Extreme Mode is more like a traditional Mega Man game - start from scratch, beat eight robot masters, fight Doctah Wahwee.

Those weird flashes are almost definitely the game switching rom banks. They're packing way too many images into such a tiny memory, so they have to basically reload and redraw the entire screen to change basically a tileset. Trying to pack a Megaman X game onto a gameboy is ambitious, but there's no way in hell anyone could actually do that, so they opted to keep the look and the sprites but sacrificed game flow and the ability to backtrack.

The spritework's pretty impressive overall though. This might be the best-animated gbc game I've seen.

what is this game

You're expecting a lot out of a dude literally named 'Sword'. (In Hebrew)

Anyway, time for Translation Fun Time!

THE THREE VILLAINS

Game Script: Techno: I didn’t expect the past data could be destroyed so easily… Huh. We would get into trouble if the computer protections are broken… We need to make a move quickly.

Actual Translation: Techno: I can't believe X deleted that past data so easily…Hehehehe. We're in big trouble if he manages to clear all the protection….think it's time we made a move.

So here's a small line change that does a bit to change how Techno comes across. Instead of going "Huh" (as in "minor amusement/confusion"), he's supposed to be going "Huhun" (as in "onomatopoeia for a sensible chuckle"). So instead of "minor surprise", it's supposed to be "minor amusement". This one is probably just a translation error instead of bad writing, since amusement is more true to his personality than vague befuddlement.

Game Script: Geemel: Kekeke! Take it easy! Let’s relax and see his action from here.

Actual Translation: Geemel: Kekeke! It’s fine! Let’s just chill and watch him from here!

Game Script: Techno: Geemel, you’ll get hurt if you disvalue his power.

Actual Translation: Techno: Don’t be stupid, Geemel. If you take his power lightly you’ll only get hurt.

Game Script: Zain: Don’t worry, I’ll do it… I’ll crush him for sure…

Actual Translation: Zain: I will go….I’ll stop him for sure….

Game Script: Techno: OK. You go then.

Actual Translation: Techno: Yeah. We’ll leave it to you.

Game Script: Geemel: Kekeke! Don’t fail us!

Actual Translation: Geemel: Kekeke! Don’t screw up!

THE FIGHT WITH ZAIN

Game Script: Zain: You must be X… My name is Zain! You have no chance of beating me!

Actual Translation: Zain: You’re X, eh… I would test your might!

(X wins against Zain.)

Game Script: Zain: I underestimated you… You got lucky… But next time your luck won’t be able to save you…

Actual Translation: Zain: Tch… looks like I underestimated you. Most impressive...but our next fight will your last…

Gotta be thorough.

But you're right, it's mostly the okay translation right now. The bigger problems come later.

How customizable are the controls in that controls menu? Start isn't presently mapped to anything - maybe you could make it a dash button?

That's the only change that can be made, really. You either get double-tap dash, or you get that plus start-button dash.

Neither is particularly comfortable to do on an actual GBC, mind you. I'm constantly amazed that people cleared this game before the GBA happened.
