I've liked every Mega Man series from classic to X to Zero to ZX, and am a big fan of the BattleNet games as well. I couldn't get into Legends, it's suuuper clunky. I heard that Legends 2 plays better, control-wise, but the first was really not my cup of tea. It's super charming though, and it is well aware of the limitations of its engine, so I can understand why people like it.

Try the PC port of DASH 2, or use an emulator that supports mouse axis as analog input on the right stick. Since the right stick is always camera " mouse look", you effectively have Keyboard+Mouse control. Especially in the PC port, where it's a native feature. But only Legends 2 has that behavior.

Looks like I'm gonna splurge for this series. 720p with a 360 pixel border upscaled to 1200p for the win everlasting peace...

...most of the stage themes are cheap, half-hearted renditions of the originals, but Waveman's theme does not sound like its NES counterpart *at all*. What the hell?

Yeah, the actual Wave Man theme (or at least about 7 seconds of it) is used for the Game Over screen for some reason.

Be sure to stay tuned for plenty more nonsensical level and musical decisions, including

a Mega Man 2 cameo

You would hope so ;).

Also, an interesting thing: Wave Man has no weakness, every weapon deals 1 to him (other than charged Mega Buster which deals 4, but that applies to everything in this game really).

I think what annoys me more about this game than even the DOS ones is that it's not like this is a one-man project here. It's literally a team taking existing levels and not adapting them properly for the Game Gear screen.

I wonder how feasible would be copying NES Mega Man levels to Game Gear.

NES is 256x224 (usually slightly less than that vertically due to TV screens, but it's not a huge difference).
Game Gear (and Game Boy) is 160x144.

This means you have 96 pixels horizontally lost and 80 pixels vertically lost. Due to how tilemap graphics work, you cannot exactly make the game smaller to fit in.

The smallest block unit in Mega Man games is 16x16, this means 6 blocks horizontally to take note off, and 5 blocks vertically. This is a lot of missing space when porting a game that made use of all the visible NES space. New levels are practically a necessity for this to be good, or if too lazy to make new levels, port Game Boy levels or something (Mega Man IV or V port for Game Gear would be neat, sure).

All I'm looking forward to with this screen size talk is the MM&Bass LP. Unless raocow wants to do Rockman&Forte, instead, of course...

I think this will be SNES version, as that one was first. And I specifically asked raocow to NOT play GBA version due to various issues with it (mostly small screen and bad translation - that said, GBA version of Rockman and Forte at least had some thought made for smaller GBA size, and GBA has larger screen resolution than Game Gear).

Didn't the say he's not playing ports? So the GBA version is definitely out.

Mega Man and Bass is sorta special, as the English version is the GBA version. The original SNES version was Japan only (not really surprising, I mean, the game was released in 1998, nobody would care to translate a SNES game at this point).

What about if someone translated it in 2002?

I mean, an official translation of SNES game in 1998 just wasn't going to happen. Fan translations of course did.

Also, cool that CD database is translated, it didn't use to be the case back when I played this game.

Yes, but the first time he hit Toad Man with a normal shot during the dance, it didn't work.

I guess the timing window is tighter on this version or something?

No idea, I've never played this version! I was just speaking about the original Mega Man 4.

By the looks of it, yeah, the dance might be shorter though, maybe, I think?
