This game really dropped in entertainment value when North Korea began. Every level is just either a puzzle or just really bad and overly difficult and the personality has really been lost.

As for why the midpoint is so lopsided: there used to be no midpoint at all.
I wouldn't consider it lopsided. There's basically no way to die past the first purple block up to the koopa/vine puzzle.

The hack was bad before that point. It's especially disappointing to me because Koopster hinted the possible release of the next JUMP before C3. What I didn't realize was he was referring to YUMP. The only thing I like about it is that it has @17 renditions of certain songs for the OW. :P

according to Lazy...this is what YUMP is supposed to be. I think YUMP's intention has been marred by the "cool ideas" levels, and now people think YUMP is supposed to be janky, fun ideas as opposed to complete garbage.

This is why it has controversy on SMWC. :P

I feel like I need to clarify something. YUMP was supposed be like that at the start of the project. We actually had quite a few discussions when the game was around halfway done about what direction to take, and we decided that we needed to balance out the trash and make some genuinely interesting levels now. During the second half of development, levels like Ryugyong Hotel and into the dark valley... were the standard. This mixture of design styles is pretty jarring and I can see why people are confused/angry but personally I wouldn't want it any other way.

Does anyone know why lava works the way it does in SMW? Like, any reason they wouldn't just make it like a muncher that insta-kills you and other sprites? It's weird they make it kinda act like water. Maybe something to do with the animation of sprites drowning in it. But I don't know why they couldn't have that effect without it remaining to insta-kill Mario.

I've noticed comments both in the videos and here that this hack is getting worse but I don't quite see it. Adding in my own thoughts, this is my favourite hack LP in a while for the marios; the janky art style is amazing to me and all these weird gimmicks and puzzle levels are incredibly fun as well. For me at least, puzzle levels are about seeing the weird mechanics of the engine and trying to solve them ahead of raocow mentally. Then the joke levels make laughs and giggles for everyone. The only major flaw for me is the genuinely bad levels that nobody has fun during.

The people in the YouTube comments have an attention span of 6 seconds.
I've loved the past few episodes. Today's was really fun to watch and try to figure out. The puzzle levels are far more engaging than regular romp levels.

Surface lava's hitbox is a full block while the sprite isn't really conducive of that. You'd end up dying before even touching the lava pixels

The fact that YUMP is a complete mixed bag definitely makes it more reminiscent of the old YouTube levels. You never know when starting the video whether the level is going to be great or garbage tier.

the reason it acts like water probably has something to do with why podoboos require sprite buoyancy, which is a water-related thing, in order to work. apparently the game uses the buoyant state to detect the moment they're submerged (IIRC, I've seen podoboos use water instead of lava in some SMW hacks)

To be fair, I'm somewhat curious what boss order will raocow pick for MM2. Unlike other games in series, you can hardly say that if you "start with Metal Man you will end with Quick Man" as bosses have multiple weaknesses (which I really like about MM2, and I wonder why this wasn't done in other games in the series). For instance, after doing Metal Man you can do Flash Man, and then Quick Man.

I will admit however that ending with Quick Man is very likely however, as you may want to have a second weakness for Quick Man (which is Crash Bomber or Atomic Fire), because you will be using Flash Man's weapon in level itself too... And it's not Quick Man's weapon will be even useful until Dr Wily stages, as you already beat Metal Man if you start with Metal Man, and while Quick Boomerang is technically also a weakness of Bubble Man, Metal Blade is just so much more useful against it.

The game gives you lots of freedom in terms of order you do bosses in, which is unlike pretty much any other Mega Man game.

There is a clear primary weakness chain, though (I admit I had to think carefully about it too, but it does exist):
Metal -> Bubble -> Heat -> Wood -> Air -> Crash -> Flash -> Quick -> Metal

The only thing "breaking" this chain is Metal Blade, because for whatever reason, it's a better weakness than Quick Boomerangs for Metal Man himself, it's probably easier to just spam it against Wood Man than time your Atomic Fire charges right, and it's far easier to hit Flash Man with than to place the Crash Bomb in a way that'll get him hit twice while he stays put stopping time. And of course you can also destroy Wood Man by sneaking Air Shooter shots in between his shield, but it's very clear that Wood Shield IS Air Man's only real weakness, not actually the other way around.

Basically, Metal Blade breaks everything, again.

magic coin used to be a terrible level which involved P-Balloon Flying with Lakitus and munchers. Fun. Essentially Tubular. Thankfully it was changed a lot. Also, wow, DINOSAUR CASTLE has the same gimmick as House oHELPICANTSEE, but executes its gimmick so much better it's crazy.

HELL is one of early levels, but I feel like it's the most playable of those.

I think there may have been a pipe in that pit raocow got stuck in in Hell. Though whether it was usable is up for debate. (If it was actually a pipe and not something else that takes up two blocks.)
