Re: Level Contest Japan - secret stars secret stars
The ice level looks like a first time level, and not very well tested apparently if the author missed the invisible Goombas. The stars/moon were also pretty weird; they were more or less handed out like candy.
Negative Space is long, but I felt engaged the entire time I was playing it, which just makes it feel even more impressive. It's nice when I feel like I can trust the author enough to not put the dragon coins in stupid spots that you could search for hours and never find (like a random hole). There actually was a moon hidden as well, which I managed to find somehow while looking for the last (first?) dragon coin. raocow's words at 17:52 (which he prefaces with "joking aside") sum the level up a lot more poetically than I would be able to. I also liked the lowbeat choice of music eventually, even though I was iffy on it at first.

Well it is a decent hack but sometime its just too repetitif there no level that actually pop in your face and your like oh yeah that level they all ressemble themselves and just monster along the way.

Artistic opinion aside, I liked negative space. Though I sorta wished more was done with the black/white gimmick affecting the level design.

I really like Negative Space, it's probably in my top 5. It's not the silhouette style, but that it integrates so well, and so intuitively, with the gameplay.

Yeah, that is sort of one regret I have looking back.FrozenQuills wrote: ↑6 years ago Artistic opinion aside, I liked negative space. Though I sorta wished more was done with the black/white gimmick affecting the level design.
Also I didn't realize silhouette levels were that common until after I made the level. Though the main focus for me while making it was always on adding that extra twist to it.

Is it actually all that difficult to differentiate between left and right?

Since the naming gimmick is the first enemy you kill, it seems to be a Lakitu.

I think I saw a midpoint pole just past that rotodisc stairway, which means raocow skipped it completely by glitching through the wall.

veggie pile was definitely more enjoyable than a number of levels we've seen thus far in this contest
i've honestly never played a video game in my life
Re: Level Contest Japan - grass town grass town
So what happens if you bop the hidden Music Note block in the SMB3 1-5 section?

Re: Level Contest Japan - grass town grass town
Veggie Pile is hilarious, yet stupid. It's like somebody made a level to stress test SMBX 2.0, and submitted it to the contest. It was well worth my time for a laugh.
That second level makes me want to take a nap. The music obviously plays a big part in that, but the feeling of lazy relaxation comes through the writing too, despite the poor translation.
Reconstructed Road has a couple neat transitions, where the levels from SMB1 and SMB2 blend together nicely. Other than that and the graphics, this level has basically nothing else.

Whoa, next level looks... interesting.
SMBX controls feel like they're going to be waaaaay too loose for precision platforming challenges you typically see in fangames, but I guess we'll see what happens
