Re: Level Contest Japan - castle inside story
Oh boy, it's the first level raocow played that I played beforehand! (I wanted to play all of them before rao, but he started on a completely different path than I did which put a wrench in that plan)
I actually kinda liked this level though despite having a few issues with it. One such issue was, as Dragon Fogel pointed out, the rooms inbetween the dice sections felt kind of unnecessary and dragged the level out a bit imo. The other main issue I had was with the fireball room. It felt a bit too tight for me in some places and it made it feel like Mario just wouldn't move fast enough to where he was supposed to be without getting hurt half the time. I might've been able to learn the pattern better if I didn't have to redo another room before it every time also. And yeah there were a few issues with conveyance that people pointed out. I remember dying at least once due to being surprised one of the thwomps was a maverick (I think it was in the 5-die section or the section after it).
I honestly had more fun with the second DT-like part than I think raocow did, though the midpoint before it probably helped with that tremendously plus the fact that I took a 15 minute break beforehand. Also probably due to the fact that speed related challenges appeal to me for some reason.
Also I didn't finish the Elite Trio fight because it took me 4 hours to get the first star and I really needed to go to bed at the time, but it looked like it got kinda crazy there toward the end.
And dang it I wanted to see the rest of that first dialogue exchange because the game stopped working at the same point for me!

Re: Level Contest Japan - castle inside story
The second part has a fairly major flaw (the first part does too, it's just far less of an issue there) where if you screw up but survive you're basically guaranteed to take multiple hits. DT handles this by putting in the occasional spot where multiple colors are together which allows you to resync yourself with the timer. That alleviates the problem quite a lot by splitting it into smaller, more digestible, sections.Lunatic Quark wrote: ↑6 years agoI honestly had more fun with the second DT-like part than I think raocow did, though the midpoint before it probably helped with that tremendously plus the fact that I took a 15 minute break beforehand. That sure was a level with a dated Youtube Poop reference.
Re: Level Contest Japan - still putting off veggie pile
The first level felt weirdly uncontesty. It was pretty fun to play through.

I remember playtesting Mabel's "Funkay Factory Jam" level. I knew raocow was going to die dealing with those rotating circles, and it was hilarious when it happened.
I also remember suggesting for Mabel to fix the sprite of the bullet bill when it's facing to the left, so either it was forgotten or it was left like that intentionally so raocow would comment on it.

That second level had such a huge problem with conveyance that it took the one gimmick that conveys itself and... Breaks it.

Today's level was haunted. That's the only explanation I care about.
Well it is a decent hack but sometime its just too repetitif there no level that actually pop in your face and your like oh yeah that level they all ressemble themselves and just monster along the way.

So the second level was just crazy ddr with some really weird and rather weak level design?
Still, if the arrows worked, it seems like some of the setups are impossible without getting hurt.
Don't know how you make such code that doesn't work in the compilation, but I also never did Lua (only C and 65c816 ASM).

Re: Level Contest Japan - still putting off veggie pile
No discussion of the laser level? I thought it was pretty good, and I'm glad MECHDRAGON did this instead of making an enormous mazy level. The level didn't overstay its welcome, and I thought it was cool how each portion was designed around the three lasers that constantly fell from the top. There were a couple awkward issues I didn't really notice until raocow pointed them out (no powerup in the second half, having to wait for four obstacles to be timed together), but overall it was pretty cool.
The second level also broke for me. I don't see an issue with having the second DDR machine rotate, but maybe that's because I don't play DDR. I haven't played that part yet because I was hoping raocow would have a solution for the bugginess. I guess I'll just use cheat codes for that as well.

Yeah I'm a big fan of mechdragon's new-ish approach there, best of all, the changing of the lasers to hurt blocks instead of instant kill.

The first level being entirely one screen was also really cool and it never seemed like you're forced to take a hit even with the constant falling lasers.

Re: Level Contest Japan - still putting off veggie pile
How do the controls work for the last part of the second level? It looks like it stays as up/down/left/right as you'd expect (judging by how little trouble raocow seemed to have with things switching around) but it's not entirely obvious.

Re: Level Contest Japan - still putting off veggie pile
basically you have to do as where the arrow points and it's associated colour, not where they are placed on the cross. Except for the flipping arrows, in which case you have to remember what colour is what direction.

Re: Level Contest Japan - still putting off veggie pile
Ah, alright. That's a bit more complicated than you were making it look then. A lot easier than having to only ever remember which color is which direction though which is what I was thinking the alternative was going to be.

He responded pretty thoroughly on the YouTube video itself.
I'm glad I caught my error quickly and asked Enjl to fix it or else my level would have suffered a similar glitchy fate, although the glitch that was in my level wouldn't have hurt the player.
I guess this is the risk we all take when we choose to use LunaLua in our levels.
