MaGL 3 results: moral of the story: laziness always prevails

this is the place where lps are being talked about. it's important to talk about games being played on the internet.

it makes me happy that "garbage town sewer" isn't being used as a rank tier this time around; these first few levels were pretty good

Comments and scores will be posted this afternoon (and you can expect this trend to continue .. work during the day and all that). As today made obvious, the lowest ranked entries weren't actually THAT bad - rather, they were honest first attempts, which was nice to see.

Oh man, starting off with honest effort levels right off the bat (and I haven't even shown up yet!) That's awesome. As amusing as joke/troll levels can be, I always prefer the ones that actually tried, and this time we don't even need to wait!

I honestly kind of liked how in Zephyr_Dragonlord's level everything was just falling into holes all over the place, including the coins. I don't know if the coins were meant to be part of that but it really helped reinforce the theme!

When I first played the level, I initially thought having a bunch of sprite coins bopping around was a deliberate if strange (but in its own way sort of creative) authorial decision. Once I realized what was actually going on, though, I genuinely laughed out loud. It makes sense if you're coming at things from an SMBX perspective, though--coins are NPCs there!

I think the steeper learning curve of Lunar Magic functions as a (limited) defense against garbage levels. Sure, it doesn't protect against people just spamming random blocks and enemies or so such (although the sprite limitations do rein the latter in to a slight degree), but something like the acid levels found so frequently in the lower MaGL X tiers would take as much or more work than a "real" level, so if you're going to put in that much effort, why not just try to make genuinely good but trippy level instead? Needing to learn a bit more to produce something probably makes people care a bit more about what they actually do make.

Well, those levels were a surprise! Not to echo others for the sake of it, but I'm also glad the contest starts off with real effort, since some of the previous contests troll/joke levels were hard to watch.

That said, I'm fully expecting myself in the next two videos, seeing where we started at.

I didn't get the sprite coins at first either. Even now, I find the fact that they are sprite coins more adorable than hilarious.

The first level I played was StevenThePotato's because of the clickbait. Who wouldn't want to play a "wow it's good" level?

JUDGES' COMMENTS AND SCORES FOR 68TH - 66TH:

FrozenQuills:
Truckeeben - Ambition Backfired

FUN: 1/30
DIFFICULTY: 2/5
CREATIVITY: 1/10
AESTHETICS: 4/10 (1/5 GFX + 3/5 MUS)
FUNCTIONALITY: 5/5

TOTAL: 13/60

COMMENTS:
Uh, I guess flying is fun?

The level essentially had no enemies since you could either fly
over the whole thing or you can get the star and not have to
deal with them anyway. The only interesting tidbits about this
level are that the cape is hidden and that flying is fun in the
most basic sense.

Yeah, this level really needs to be more developed.

TLDR:
+ Flying is fun
- Flying is all you had to do

OTHER:
i mean, you submitted something which is better than nothing i
suppose

StevenThePotato - wow it's good

FUN: 8/30
DIFFICULTY: 4/5
CREATIVITY: 3/10
AESTHETICS: 5/10 (2/5 GFX + 3/5 MUS)
FUNCTIONALITY: 5/5

TOTAL: 25/60

COMMENTS:
A decent level.

This level has enemies and stuff. Yeah. I did like the part with
the three charlies on the weird slopey terrain though.

Not much else I can say that's interesting in this level; it
just felt really typical unfortunately.

TLDR:
+ Okay design
- Could do more across the board

OTHER:
¯\_(?)_/¯

Zephyr_DragonLord - Unnamed (or YOSHI'S ISLAND 1 I guess?)

FUN: 6/30
DIFFICULTY: 4/5
CREATIVITY: 2/10
AESTHETICS: 2/10 (1/5 GFX + 1/5 MUS)
FUNCTIONALITY: 4/5

TOTAL: 18/60

COMMENTS:
This looks like your first level!

Despite the palette being messed up and the music/ambience not
fitting at all, this was a bit decent.

I liked a few of the charlie setups, like the one with the
charging chuck after the parakoopa jump, but it just turned into
clapping chuck spam at the end.

Also none of your cannons are firing: you need bullet generators
for those to work.

TLDR:
+ Good effort
- First level woes

OTHER:
all those poor coins forgot how to float

Comment: Heh… not bad, kid. Not bad at all. Your meme, I mean. It’s not bad. A good first attempt. It’s plenty dank… I can tell it’s got some thought behind it… lots of quotable material… But memeing isn’t all sunshine and rainbows, kid. You’re skilled… that much I can tell. But do you have what it takes to be a Memester? To join those esteemed meme ranks? Memeing takes talent, that much is true. But more than that it takes heart. The world-class Memesters - they’re out there day and night, burning the midnight meme-oil, working tirelessly to craft that next big meme. And you know what, kid? 99 times out of a hundred, that new meme fails. Someone dismisses it as bait, or says it’s “tryhard,” or ignores it as they copy/paste the latest shitpost copypasta dreamt up by those sorry excuses for cut-rate memers over at reddit. The Meme Game is rough, kid, and I don’t just mean the one you just lost :). It’s a rough business, and for every artisan meme you craft in your meme bakery, some cocksucker at 9gag has a picture of a duck or some shit that a million different Johnny No-Names will attach a milion different captions to. Chin up, kid. Don’t get all mopey on me. You’ve got skill. You’ve got talent. You just need to show your drive.

===STEVENTHEPOTATO===

FUN: 10/30
DIFFICULTY: 3/5
CREATIVITY: 3/10
AESTHETICS: 4/10
FUNCTIONALITY: 4/5

TOTAL: 24/60

COMMENTS: This has a very "first level" feel to it, which is fine, but there's not a whole lot to write home about here. The design comes across as rather boring, generally empty, and the sprite placement seems uninspired and not very well thought out. It's a bit unfortunate that you didn't do more than just a 105 edit, as using some additional sprites and objects may have helped you be a bit more creative.

===ZEPHYR_DRAGONLORD===

FUN: 9/30
DIFFICULTY: 2/5
CREATIVITY: 3/10
AESTHETICS: 3/10
FUNCTIONALITY: 4/5

TOTAL: 21/60

COMMENTS: I mean, I guess the gimmick was cute, but it doesn't exactly lead to something I'd call a fun/good level. Rather, it resulted in a bunch of fairly barren platforming without much to do, as 75% of the enemies simply walked off of the cliffs. It seems that your Bullet Bill shooters aren't actually shooting anything either. Also, having a Super Koopa generator + the ability to go so close to the top of the screen without having it scroll (i.e. on the clouds) = a lot of unfair ambushes. Overall, it looks like you have the potential for some creative ideas, but it's going to take a bit more practice to get there.

gotta say, all this positive energy is making this such a great contest to follow. I figured I'd end up doing the pompous thing and kind of hang back and wait for my entry to come up (sliding in allusions to my inevitable victory whenever they were relevant), but man this is already so engaging and fun to be a part of!

(tho I have been binge-watching Masterchef, so maybe my worries about cynical judges were just a byproduct of that lol)

So now that the judge comments are up there and whatnot, I'll talk more about my level for the last time.
cheez8 wrote:Oh man, starting off with honest effort levels right off the bat (and I haven't even shown up yet!) That's awesome. As amusing as joke/troll levels can be, I always prefer the ones that actually tried, and this time we don't even need to wait!

Yep, things falling into holes was absolutely the theme. It was supposed to be a level themed around gallows humor, and the coins were just a happy accident. ...When you think about the dead getting richer, it kind of gets incredibly dark, especially for Mario.

So, like I said... this level would be better if I had planned out access to SNE9x beforehand. Now, it wouldn't have been brilliant by any means, but it's there. The level in its current form is a ton funnier, though. There weren't actually any Super Koopa generators; just some Super Koopas themselves. My favorite mishap is actually the subterranean Super Koopas, which is simply a hilarious concept.

Those ending Charlies are simply celebratory Charlies. They are not meant to be difficult.

I had originally planned to have a hole warp and an autoscrolling section, but since I couldn't test either of them... I wasn't going to risk that.

Of course, I need a bit more practice (and proper testing) to see how everything works, but I'm happy where I am now. And I'm happy to have made a fair few of you laugh at those coins. So with that, I leave you with the worst SMW level with an identity. (if 77th place didn't count, no offense to that guy)

...I have my next level gag, by the way.
I am prone to almost everything... except spontaneous violence.

For your knowledge, vanilla SMW does not have tiles that warp you to new sublevels. They are only available using custom blocks and maybe some other newer method that I'm unaware of. In Vanilla, pipes and doors are your only options for sublevel transitions. That means that your holes wouldn't have been able to warp the player without having a pipe or door sitting in them unless you patched in custom teleport blocks.

whoa I swear I didn't get the sprite coins until now, that's hilarious.

None of today's levels are bad yeah, they're just really really simple. Sort of a running theme for nice bunch of levels in the contest if I'm honest. There's also a few of the frustrating kind coming up, but nothing absolutely terrible imo.
