MaGL 3 results: moral of the story: laziness always prevails

this is the place where lps are being talked about. it's important to talk about games being played on the internet.

The weird magical R move was probably the Peach Bomber (her side-special in smash bros.), author person just forgot to remove the ability to scroll the screen with R so they overlapped weirdly.

JUDGES' SCORES AND COMMENTS FOR 45TH:

45th: Divemissile
-FROZENQUILLS-
FUN: 11/30
DIFFICULTY: 3/5
CREATIVITY: 4/10
AESTHETICS: 7/10 (4/5 GFX + 3/5 MUS)
FUNCTIONALITY: 5/5

TOTAL: 30/60

COMMENTS:
This was alright, though controlling Peach is weird.

The level feels like it was designed around Peach's floating
ability, and that's pretty much it. The shy guy riding in the
beginning was boring though and there is a really strange
difficulty spike after the midpoint since you need more than
Peach's hover to cross the gaps. It's also worth noting that
you cannot hover after jumping on an enemy unlike SMBX.

Controlling Peach was also a issue, since I sometimes couldn't
hover after jumping (probably because you can also hover by
just holding down the button). Also, pressing R allows Peach
to do this weird air dash thing, which does allow for more
distance but feels awkward. Speaking of which, I have no idea
what the level was telling me when it showed coins shaped
as R's.

The graphics do look pretty good though.

TLDR:
+ Some interesting Peach jumps
- Weird difficulty spike after the midpoint
- Boring shyguy ride

OTHER:
suddenly i am playing smbx

-PYRO-
Fun: 8/30
Difficulty: 4/5
Creativity: 3/10
Aesthetics: 5/10
Functionality: 4/5
Total: 24/60
Comment: oh my god that peach playable is SO JANKY. Also WHY DOES PEACH HAVE A DASH LOL?? The dash is also super glitchy because it scrolls the screen sometimes and sometimes eats your inputs. Not to mention that the flutter just doesn't feel good, it just feels wrong. Aside from the janky playable, the level is average. There's some beezo jumps, not much else to it. The playable is the main 'draw' here so to speak.

-KOOPSTER-
FUN: 14/30
DIFFICULTY: 3/5
CREATIVITY: 6/10
AESTHETICS: 6/10
FUNCTIONALITY: 5/5

TOTAL SCORE: 34/60

a pleasent stroll indeed. The Peach mechanics were a bit awkward because they weren't properly introducted. I wasn't aware that bouncing on an enemy nullified my hovering and I still don't get what benefit the R dash has on any of the screens there's a big R on?? This level doesn't have much going for it, it's really simple. But I guess I can enjoy some enemy hopping @ the end

-S.N.N.-
FUN: 15/30
DIFFICULTY: 3/5
CREATIVITY: 6/10
AESTHETICS: 7/10
FUNCTIONALITY: 2/5

TOTAL: 33/60

COMMENTS: The first half of the level was rather nice, and started to introduce Peach's mechanics well - however, I feel like the second half of the level was a write-off. Not only was it just Beezo spam, but I found it very frustrating to coordinate jumping off of them with pressing R (and as a point of advice, if you're going to have such a crucial command tacked on to the R button, then disable screen scrolling). There was some potential here, but the level didn't quite do it for me.

...Political video recommendations. On a raocow video. ZOG OFF, LOSER VIDEO.

...Ahem. ANYWAYS, here's today's levels.
THE STROLL was pretty nice. Playing as Peach in Lunar Magic is something you don't see often. I have no idea what that whole R thing is about, but it's there, I guess.

Now then, Lethal Lakeside's pretty great. The 'fusion juice' is a nice fallback on some of the harder jumps. The bonus room was incredibly creative, as are the uses of dolphins. Not once am I reminded overly of Kaizo Mario, and that's a good thing. Difficulty is basically perfect, music sounds great, the level looks great... this would easily be top 10 material, were it a level participating in this contest directly. Good job, Koopster. (and thanks for giving my 'level' decent marks)
I am prone to almost everything... except spontaneous violence.
Any questions, concerns, or aspirations you have with me can go to the PM box... Now here's a quote:

woah it's my level!

the dash thing everyone talks about wasn't even supposed to be there. i used this patch: https://www.smwcentral.net/?p=section&a=details&id=6142 and the r dash refused to go away no matter what i did. so, i figured that people dont press directions when they r scroll so no one would notice! i was kinda wrong. i shouldn't have brought attention to it with the giant Rs, but i thought r scrolling would be useful.

also the reason it was so short was because i ran out of ideas. i wanted to do something cool with riding shy guys and beezos but i couldn't think of how.

VIDEO

GAMES

wasn't centered smh

e: i dont know about you guys, but i can never suspend my belief enough to get behind lava that ascends and descends and just falls straight down like that. Obviously for a gameplay element it's pretty boring only limiting yourself to descending and keeping flat, but idk it's just one of my pet peeves. great levels though, both of you! (that buzzy beetle thingy felt like it should've led to a secret exit, or at the very least been training the player for a situation they'd have to do later. either way it was a fun little challenge).

Proposal to make all future SMW contests judged exclusively by how high the judges get on the goal tape

Today is the story of a man's journey on the nature reserve where he accidentally feeds the wildlife across multiple realities, setting into motion a chain of events that ends multiple facets of the multiverse. In order to atone for this mistake, he settles into a reality where he avoids this tragedy by drowning the patient 0 of the disaster. His solace is short-lived, however, when he finds that his reward for halting for the destruction of all that is and all that will be is 1 (one) large, novelty coin.

Ah, I had sort of nursed the vain hope that the judge levels would be a sort metatextual remixing of elements which had occurred in the entries which came before them. This may sound odd considering that at least two of them were made during the general submission period, that is to say before it was clear exactly what elements would be recurring, but as chance would have it, it's precisely those two which best fit the theme thus far. FrozenQuills', after all, seemed to be a sort of playful commentary on the romps and 105 edits we saw in the first few entries, and the
æsthetic and
y gameplay elements in Pyro's also seem to nicely reflect on and play with trends in this year's contest. Alas, random chance was not so kind, and it seems my silly dream was not to be...

Could've also used the multiple checkpoints patch and made an insanely long level.

Snazzo! Now we just need Koopster to give his dissertation on how volcanic islands, leaping dolphins and Fusion Juice™ are symbolic of somewhat better developed romps peppered with the occasional overly frustrating level.

Now, now, folks, I think we can all agree that woids are for noids, and noids ruin pizzas. No need to get aspirated, just sit back, relax, have a nice IPA, and stop all that stress from turning 'plosive. Imagine you're lying on a nice sandhi beach, or if you prefer, return from a lovely romantic liaison where you and your partner really clicked. In either event, I amb mora less certain you'll find that harmony you seek.

Calling it now, my level will appear in the next three days.
