Aren't the Clancers based in design on the same Japanese folklore...thing as the Cactuar? Forget the name...

Moley rao! I see what's coming up. If raocow's unlucky, the next video might be a one-level video.

Re: Mischief Makers - God slay the cactus king
Welp, most disappointing boss in the game is over with. Now, back to the silliness!
(And of course raocow figures out how to damage him within like twenty seconds... why couldn't seven-year-old me have that kind of insight?)

Re: Mischief Makers - God slay the cactus king
I wonder if Sasquach ß was rushed, he only has two forms compared to the other bosses and the 2nd one literally can only kick. Or maybe he's just a chump.

Re: Mischief Makers - God slay the cactus king
Watching this playthrough, I'm starting to suspect this game may have been rushed in general towards the end, as there seem to be quite a number of vestigial hints at what look like scrapped elements. Today's cutscene is a good example of this. It's actually a bit weird that they game shows that Calina survived, as the player's first thought here is, "Oh, I guess I'm going to fight her again (probably as Marina)." But no, you don't. In fact, she disappears from the game entirely after that scene, so there's really no reason to show her to be alive in the first place. The whole thing seems to be a setup for a rematch which never happens. Which strongly suggest it was meant to happen, but just never ended up being finished, like Marzen's theoretical second phase involving the shield. This is one game I'd really like to know more about the development of (not to mention someone searching through to ROM for unused things).Tenlade wrote:I wonder if Sasquach ß was rushed, he only has two forms compared to the other bosses and the 2nd one literally can only kick.
Anyway, Sasquatch β was the first boss I managed to perfect (in fact, I think he was the only one besides the Migans I succeeded in doing no-damage runs of), and I can sort of see why. It still took me a while to figure out that you were actually supposed to crush Tarus with the robot form, though, as I mistook its drunken wobbling for a sign of actual damage being done. One you make the connection, though...yeah, it's pathetically easy, since all it can do is kick (and that's precisely what you want). This is one Beast Change that's a definite downgrade.

Yeah, the TCRF page for Mischief Makers is... pretty plain. :( Definitely needs some love and attention from an ASM-reader.Le Neveu de Rameau wrote:This is one game I'd really like to know more about the development of (not to mention someone searching through to ROM for unused things).

Re: Mischief Makers - God slay the cactus king
Yeah, I remember back when I was a kid and seeing world 5 being the ending and being super sad. I wanted this game to last so much longer. And like Rameau's Nephew said, the last world does feel like it was rushed and under developed. Or maybe they were running out of ideas at that point.
Re: Mischief Makers - God slay the cactus king
I wasn't aware it was even possible to miss Tarus when trying to drop his robot on him after knocking him off, lol.
Re: Mischief Makers - God slay the cactus king
It kinda feels more like a boss rush than anything. My memory on world 5 might be failing me (it's been quite some time), but I only remember it having like 2-3 actual levels and the rest are battles.RedMageMike wrote:And like Rameau's Nephew said, the last world does feel like it was rushed and under developed. ...granted, the remaining bosses are all really awesome (especially the last couple), but still.

Re: Mischief Makers - God slay the cactus king
Clance War II feels like stage 5 of Gunstar Heroes, and not in an imaginative way
Counterattack feels like a follow-up to either an absent level or an absent cutscene...
and for that yellow diamond, I'm guessing you had to catch the laser on the far right edge of the screen rather than mid/close?

Re: Mischief Makers - God slay the cactus king
For clance war II , the trick for the gold diamond was that clancer has an incredibly high amount of health, so if you played the level normally, youd pick up the gun, start shooting everyone and then notice one clancer wont die from your bullets, and shake him.
But raocow never picked up a weapon for fear of accidently killing the gem owner and just made whats supposed to be just a level you rush out in seconds murdering everything into an absolute slog shaking literally everyone. A cautionary tale not to be too careful or you might miss something obvious.
edit: the one i got the gold gem from had a chef hat but all guides say its a plain black one so i dunno.

Re: Mischief Makers - God slay the cactus king
the trick to getting the Gold gem in Counterattack is to notice that when you're being pushed, the gem actually heads toward you. there's only one instance when you're not pushed when grabbing the beam: when you're already at the edge of the screen.

Re: Mischief Makers - God slay the cactus king
raocow, maybe you're a little too obsessed with finding the gold gems on your initial run? The entire point of Clance War II is to have fun blasting your opponents with their own laser rifles and missile launchers; ignoring this aspect is missing the point entirely. The gold gems are meant to add a bit of extra challenge to the game, but they're not supposed to replace the essential aspect of being a super-powerful cyborg running roughshod over entire armies.
In other news, Marzen switches from firing children at Marina to firing bombs and lasers. A good choice, if you ask me, if primarily because bombs and lasers' immediate response to any and all situations, pleasant or unpleasant, is not to scream incessantly. Incidentally, the mech's durability seems to be roughly the same regardless of whether it iss assaulted with childers or heavy artillery. One really has to wonder exactly what those ankle biters were made of.

I suspect it's in his mentality to not redo a level just to get a single item, since that wastes time and doesn't make for an interesting video.

Yes, raocow, shields hurt when they are thrown at people. Maybe not as much as a lance, but it still hurts!

Re: Mischief Makers - God slay the cactus king
raocow has now fallen to every justice warrior. We can only conclude from this that he's a particularly unjust individual
Ah, but raocow, how often your single-mindedness is your undoing. Merco's finally being felled by a shield bash was the perfect descending-trombone-scale conclusion to this episode, all the more so because raocow actually succeeded in hitting him with the shield much earlier in the video, but apparently failed to notice this as he was just too obsessed with yanking away that lance. Maybe the game has simply trained him too well focus his attentions on grabbing shiny golden things by this point.

"There's some kind of clue I'm not grasping" *giant flashing reticle on boss's backside* Tunnel vision is a hell of a thing. The neat thing with all these mid boss fights is the 50 different ways to fight them. For how small this game is they sure did pack in a lot of unique ways to use grab, shake, and throw.

Re: Mischief Makers - God slay the cactus king
Except for the part where he had to redo the level like twice anyways and watching him stop at each and every enemy to try and shake them wasn't particularly interesting to begin with, lol.heycallmeZe wrote:I suspect it's in his mentality to not redo a level just to get a single item, since that wastes time and doesn't make for an interesting video.
Re: Mischief Makers - God slay the cactus king
While I have no ideas on how to grab the lance when he jumps and stabs down, I would have at least tried grab the boss himself when the reticle was on him.
I'm still shocked he failed to notice he damaged the boss, twice, with the shield. And didn't he also find a way to manhandle the guy near the beginning of the video.

Fair enough then. It seemed like the post I originally replied to was implying that his actions were actually logical because of that.heycallmeZe wrote:Well, that's kind of my point. He doesn't think that far ahead, haha
It's not like he makes a very noticeable hurt sound or anything anyways. You know, something you shouldn't easily miss if you're paying even the slightest attention. Plus it's weird to not even consider the shield could hurt him to begin with in a game where anything you can pick up (sans flowers which are simply too light) can be used as a weapon. He's really to blame for all of his troubles on this level.Sebby19 wrote:I'm still shocked he failed to notice he damaged the boss, twice, with the shield. Re: Mischief Makers - God slay the cactus king
I legitimately don't remember the pirate guy from today's level at all, lol. I remember the rest of the level but that's it.
