Rex Rocket: fin
---------------
Confirmed by raocow to be the next B-Side after his half-vacation week (after more than a year of people requesting it), Rex Rocket is a 2D Metroidvania, very much inspired by retro games like Mega Man and Metroid, to name a few, with a pixel art design and chiptune soundtrack by Saskrotch. The basic story is you're a captain of a space ship where all hell breaks loose while you're asleep.
Having played it myself, I expect a very entertaining LP with lots of dying; this game is quite hard, especially the bosses.
EDIT: For those who have played it, should he keep bosses to their own video like in DT3? Not sure if he should.
---------------
Episode 1 - the king of rockets
Episode 2 - the valet of slimes
Episode 3 - the chief of robots
Episode 4 - the fool of jumps
Episode 5 - the destroyer of worlds
Episode 6 - the scavenger of sewage
Episode 7 - the saviour of (some) people
Episode 8 - the driver of mechs
Episode 9 - the running of the laser
Episoide 10 - the target of missiles
Episode 11 - the dunker of toxic
Episode 12 - the eater of trash
Episode 13 - the guy of desire
Episode 14 - the ignorer of lives
Episode 15 - the master of space
Episode 16 - the cleaner of air
Episode 17 - the rider of saucers
Episode 18 - the ride of crunch
Episode 29 - the path of death
Episode 30 - the slayer of computers

Re: Rex Rocket: Mega Man meets Metroid
Bosses should not be kept to their own video. None of them take particularly long, and only a few of them (maybe only just one) will be tough enough to warrant an entire video for them otherwise.
i've honestly never played a video game in my life

The bosses are pretty tough, but they aren't DT3 tough.
Dunno what controller setup raocow will be using, but I do want to point out that the game does use analog stick for movement by default for some reason, and it took me a while to realize there was an option to swap to d-pad. The annoying thing is to switch you have to go to the controls screen, which also spoils most of the abilities you unlock throughout the game. Why it's not just in the settings menu is anyone's guess. I'm not done with the game, and while it's really fun, there are a lot of head-scratching decisions like that.

Re: Rex Rocket: Mega Man meets Metroid
So there will be a video today? Huh.
(Note: This was written 7 minutes before he usually posts the B-Side video. This note is written for posterity purposes)
I watched the trailers, and though it seems interesting, I'm not entirely sold on it. Then again, I wasn't sold on VVVVVV until raocow played it, so...

Re: Rex Rocket: Mega Man meets Metroid
How is pressing up to talk a weird decision? That is literally how you talk to people in Zelda II. And also real life.

Pressing up on not-the-thing-you're-moving-with is the weird part.

Hm? I don't have this game, I thought the up was for your move-a-ma-bob.JVyrn wrote:Pressing up on not-the-thing-you're-moving-with is the weird part.

EDIT: I'm an idiot. This is later. Dammit.
Also, yeah, you control with the D-Pad or the Legt-analog (you can change it in the controls menu), and Up on the other will talk.

raocow, I don't think you ever actually ended up finishing what you kept trying to say about realizing something about your mini-vacation.

What even is this?

Hey, you never went into why this is an emergency recording. Ha, you get distracted just as easily as Chuggaaconroy.

I looked at it again and saw the word Metroidvania and now no longer care what it even is. It is now an Amazing Game™ regardless of how bad it might be.
Carry on.

Yep, it's a Metroidvania, and it's hard. Metroidvanias.com even called it a "Meatboyvania".metasomnia wrote:I looked at it again and saw the word Metroidvania and now no longer care what it even is. It is now an Amazing Game™ regardless of how bad it might be.

If you like Metroidvanias or hard games, you should enjoy this LP.
EDIT: Just remembered this. raocow, if you go back to the bedroom area, I believe there's a secret passage there. IIRC it's the only secret not shown on the map.

At least 8/10 times Chugga will finish, and 1/10 of the other times, he leaves a note on screen.Sebby19 wrote:Hey, you never went into why this is an emergency recording. Ha, you get distracted just as easily as Chuggaaconroy.
Yeah... I hope it improves.Ometeotl wrote:Internet memes: for when writing dialogue is too difficult
Anyway, I like how we go from one brutally hard game to another, but not quite as brutal, hard game. It LOOKS nice I'll say that much, but I'm not sold. But, this first episode was just a dialog dump, so that doesn't give it any favors. I'll give it a few more episodes before I decide if I wanna jump into the game, or just watch raocow.
I'm an idiot who likes vidya games.
And also maybe makes bad decisions based on those vidya games.

i think he was just going to say he realized he didn't have a video ready for tonight.Alice wrote:raocow, I don't think you ever actually ended up finishing what you kept trying to say about realizing something about your mini-vacation.
Yeah, the 'references = lol' approach is strong with this one. There's less dialogue in the rest of the game, though, but it continues to be that way.Ometeotl wrote:Internet memes: for when writing dialogue is too difficult

I'm liking all the animated bits everywhere. Moving pixels are pretty nice.
To Cyborg 22 I say, me too.

Getting a big Cave Story vibe from this. Five bucks on Steam, eh? Think I'll grab this myself to play along.
