I heard about you finishing this from Horikawa, Congrats on finishing your first LP.

I might look into your LP as I've totally forgotten this game haha. I beat it long ago, didn't get the magic bell for infinite gems though.
What did you think of Soulblazer overall?

Re: Rednaxela Plays: Soul Blazer... wait... now Ys 1!

Thanks! I thought it was great fun really, I'm glad to have played it. The magic bell was... kind of really nice to have at the end there, haha.

Anyway, a New LP begins! Time to try Ys 1, the Chronicles+ version (PC port of the PSP remake). I uploaded on Thursday as per the usual Thursday/Sunday schedule lately, thought forgot to update the thread.

As a note, this time I'll probably not be updating this thread with replies for new episodes unless the thread is otherwise active. I'll keep the first post up-to-date regardless though.

Warning: the first boss is a huge pain. Until you grind enough levels that he winds up being trivial.

Interesting... Well, I've also heard it claimed that on easy difficulty as I went with, one doesn't really need to grind... so I'm going to get to it without any grinding at first anyway and see how it goes. Will see how it goes ;)

It's not so much that the fight is hard as that it has an annoying setup. Consequently, if your stats aren't high enough, it's just a long-dragged out fight where you probably keep getting killed for stupid reasons. I'm not fond of it, but you'll see for yourself soon enough.

Well, I haven't yet gotten to that boss fight, but... poor doggie...

I... now see what you mean... Also the scaling of things in this game is a bit... interesting.

Yeah, the stat scaling is weird and this applies for the whole series, pretty much. Jenocres is one of my least favorite bosses ever, because he does nothing to directly attack you and it's trivial to avoid damage indefinitely, but you have to expose yourself to the hard-to-predict poison gas traps to actually hit him. It's awful.

The third boss is even worse. You want to be fully prepared for that one - again, more because the fight is really annoying than because it's actually hard. At least Jenocres can be trivialized with grinding.

The Golden Vase you found is for selling at the pawn shop. The Bestiary Potion unlocks the monster list, I think you have to use it first. Kind of a weird way of doing a monster list, Ys 2 does the same thing.

Ahh, good to know, also glad you mentioned the Bestiary Potion as that ended up reminding me to try it, and I rather like having that.

In this episode, seems we meet some new faces as we continue deeper into the shrine.

Edit:
And now we have, the next boss of the game! I think we're done in the shrine now. I have to say, I liked that second boss more than the first certainly.

Yeah, I didn't think that first attempt was going to go well when you went into the fight with only 16 HP. But Nyltiger isn't nearly as much of a pain as Jenocres was.

The next boss is just awful, though. You'll see what I mean when you get there.

Indeed, and interesting about the next boss, I'll keep that in mind.

For now, we have random divisions, plot, and sidequests!

Time to get down to business and go splunking

But sometimes nothing beats a good ol' time fishing and laying around near the trees.

Another boss down, but what's next...

New areas to explore like this are kind of interesting.

I wonder about the difficulty curve with boss design sometimes.

Teleporter mazes are... a thing in some games.

So a bit late to linking these here, but a new LP has begun! Or, half new? Time to see how Ys 2 is.

I get the "like Ys 1 but better" impression from what I hear, and it's supposedly basically the only direct sequel in the series, so, let's take a look!

Thumbnails have had nice variety so far. Easy to recognize.

Edit: The links seem to be directing to Ys 1 LP.
