As regular JUMP viewers know, I recently had to start a second job, meaning I have no time to play games (or even use my laptop!) from Thursday evening until Sunday morning each week. So, to keep providing daily content, each week I'll be pre-recording some episodes of a selected PlayStation game for release on Thurs/Fri/Sat! JUMP is still the main LP, of course!
"One" is a PS1 game released in 1997 by ASC Games, developed by Visual Concepts. You play as John Cain, a gruff-looking dude who wakes up with a laser gun in place of an arm. And the plot makes less sense from then on out! The main gimmick is the "Rage" meter - as you destroy things, your weapon gets stronger, you get more health and your rate of fire increases! But getting hurt makes John Cain lose some of his power, making you more likely to get hurt, putting you in a dangerous situation! Action platforming, shooting, explosions and low-polygon PS1 graphics - what more could you ask for?! :D

Now the game starts for real - and the difficulty curve is pretty steep! Ep2 - Rooftop Rampage
Also, why male monks?!

John Cain arrives at a huge, winding canyon and destroys everything. Also, an unreasonable zip line segment and terrible camera angles while doing finicky platforming. Hooray! :D Ep3 - Ridge Riot

The jumps seem really awkward in this game. Like is there some button you have to press in order to grab a ledge? Or is there some way to double jump higher? At first I thought the game was making you do a bunch of 'just barely out of your reach' sort of jumps because they wanted you to jump on the destroyed objects and stuff as a platform, but a lot of times there isn't anything around. I mean I guess the out of reach jumps could just be an oversight but then there's that one secret area thing in that bridge section that was just barely out of reach, so I guess the game really does expect you to do jumps like that. But yeah I'm kinda curious about those secret stuff. The levels seem incredibly linear as is.

I'm starting to think I need to press the melee button when I reach a ledge to grab onto it, although more often than not you don't want to waste the smart bomb from hyper rage mode, which is also the melee button. (which is weird, because R2 isn't even used for anything, and weapon switch is naturally on the select button. This game doesn't know what to do!). Regarding reaching some of the weird jump areas, I think I know how to do it now - I show off a new move at the start of this level! (which I only just read about on the game's gamefaq page while searching for level maps)
I hope releasing this episode early makes up for the lack of JUMP tonight. Glad I have some of these pre-recorded! Ep4 - Rail Retribution

I can't tell if this game wants to be a platformer or not. I got a mario sunshine/galaxy vibe from that early release episode's level, except with 0 camera control or depth perception. I liked the surrealism of it at least. It's a refreshing break from 'shoot everything all the time'

I've read that this game was very well received in its demo form about six months before release, although early reviewers were assuming that the gameplay bugs (like the questionable camera) would be fixed. But nothing really changed in the final release. It's such a shame, because I think this game has really great concepts. All it required is polish and some extra length and it could have been a new, popular series. Tying together health, strength, firepower and destruction into a single entity is neat and should be explored more.
For those who haven't seen it, here's episode 5! We enter a surreal dream world for some reason! Ep5 - Reality Retaliation

The final stage of this short action game! John Cain discovers his identity while we fight squids and a giant cyborg snake. Yup, makes sense to me! Ep6 - Reptilian Rapture [FINAL]
What did you guys think of ONE?
The game I most want to play next for the B-Side is so dated and immature that I'm afraid to LP it. Shall I make people cringe or not?

Wow, that really was short haha. Interesting game, definitely feels a bit unfinished but it has its charm. The thing that makes it especially interesting is how little information there is about it (or at least how hard it is to find information about it). I'd also be interested to see a speedrun of this
I vote for Bridge Engineering... wait... no, I mean the cringe thing.

I was going to upload the intro cinematics to my channel tonight, but there's too much jiggle physics (!). I never noticed that when I played the game as a young teen, because I'd skip those cutscenes out of embarrassment!
I could put up a vote for a selection of games others have seen before, or just play this one that I reckon most here never would have played. Still undecided what to do...
