You know, this series appears to have a distressing fixation with pig anuses. And to think, we were concerned with the preponderance of banana-ear jokes.
(Also, the game seems to have responded to raocow's tirade about Mike being dismayingly 90s-era radicola by ostensibly trying to play up precisely these elements in the game's intro. I find this decidedly gnarlicola.)

Didn't ever notice that about the title screen before, though I bet it's really supposed to be the index finger.
In case you didn't write down the pattern on the wall here it is again:
It's harder to remember than the "do me so far do me" from the first game.

Disappointed you didn't typo 'MILK' as 'MALK' because MALK is a Simpsons reference!

I didn't watch to the end of the first Startropics but I assume Zoda is pissed because Yoda keeps getting put before him for stuff

Was it a cat I saw? -> was I tac a ti saW -> w a s i t a c a t i s a w -> Was it a cat I saw?
Was it a rat I saw? -> was I tar a ti saW -> w a s i t a r a t i s a w -> Was it a rat I saw?
They're palindromes raocow :U
Already loving the fact that you can do things diagonally in this game, and that there are multiple height layers.

Southpaw is a sports term for Left-handed, reliver is relief pitcher, so he's the left handed backup pitcher for his team.
But all the sprites and artwork for the games shows him as right handed. speaking of the art in the second game's manual is quite something
And the boxart looks like something from a D&D based rpg.

Wow, that's some real visual clash with the lettering, especially the V-claw.Tenlade wrote:And the boxart looks like something from a D&D based rpg.

Re: Startropics II: how can a cat and a rat ever be a friend
Wait, they were still making games for the NES in 1994?
Re: Startropics II: how can a cat and a rat ever be a friend
Yep, the last official nintendo game for the NES was wario woods, released in the US on december 10th, 1994. By the time this game (zoda's revenge) came out the SNES had been out for 3 years.
The NES had a long life comparitively, nintendo dropped the n64 and gamecube dropped support from nintendo instantly. The wii on the other hand...Still has games coming out, huh.

This game already looks more polished than the first game.

The way this is starting seems promising. In many ways similar, but better.
I've got to say though... it's a bad idea for people to recommend raocow a game where the main character is a stereotypical 90s "cool kid".

Re: Startropics II: how can a cat and a rat ever be a friend
Strangely enough, some people don't like the alleged improvements in this game. If you want to watch a negative review, watch the Happy Video Game Nerd's video. He reasons that the first game's stiff controls worked because the dungeons were designed around them. But he thinks that the freer controls in Zoda's Revenge ruin the game because he feels the game was still designed around the controls of the first game and so the platforming is difficult. I don't know if that's true, I've only played the first game.
Anyway, it's weird that it was published on the NES in 1994 (the year I was born). It seems that it would have been more sensible to make it for the SNES, especially if Nintendo wanted the franchise to continue. I believe I've read it was released to market the final revision of the SNES (the top loader).

The intro cutscenes were just awful with their dialogues and jokes, but gameplay-wise it looks a lot more promosing.
I don't like that princess, she could have told them what's written there and there would be no problem. I think she was plotting with Zoda all along!

Re: Startropics II: how can a cat and a rat ever be a friend
The only way this game could be more radical is if Mike skateboards off the Pyramids.

Alright you saved the fat children from Yum-Yum!
Yeah attacking the boar is a very bad idea it makes the boss move faster and shoot more bubbles.
A warning about this game, sometimes you can walk straight into water to your death. There are some occasions where you won't run into that invisible wall separating you from the water/pit.

Re: Startropics II: Ping "Pals"
Do you have to collect the S and Z Tetrads separately? Because they're totally super-imposable in 3D space
Also if you're travelling through time and space you cannot possibly know where you are, perhaps the Universe is so mind-bogglingly large there just happens to be an exact duplicate of the Sphinx on some other planet. I mean you never know.

Re: Startropics II: Ping "Pals"
I am in awe of racow's amazing memory, I couldn't remember that sequence for 15 minutes, let alone a day.
So yeah, yum-yum goes beserk and touhou's your ass if you kill his pig before he eats it, moving at double speed and firing double shots.
And this was back when nintendo owned the rights to tetris, and before the blocks started to be called tetriminos so yes, that is quite literally a tetris piece.
edit: the music in this game is Pretty good pretty good (posly link so no spoilers)

Specifically, moving platforms and i think vanishing/reappearing ones as well don't have that safety built in.Weird Goonie wrote: A warning about this game, sometimes you can walk straight into water to your death. That might be the most annoying low health sound I've ever heard in a videogame, and I find all low health beeping annoying.
