I joined the contest to have fun making a level through all my silly and crazy ideas :3
My goal in mind was to steal the show of the current video it was in. My MaFAB boss already did this and that makes me super happy x3

Gather the Uttermost Cold: This level had amazing graphics and was pretty solid. I din't understand why there would be two different paths to the secret star, though.
Back in My Day They Crawled in Zebes: Pretty good. The only problem was that a midpoint before a key hunt made it feel a bit unbalanced, and Ridley seemed tough to fight because of his unclear hitbox.

Re: MaGL X2 - LUESoldat x Emotion OTP
Man, if I last 11 more levels, I'll do better than last year, which feels weird because I feel like my level is objectively worse that last year's. But 11 levels is still a lot of levels to go through.
I've been away most of the weekend, so I'm just catching up. It feels like the pace has slowed down a lot lately, but I don't really mind it. The levels definitely have a lot more meat on them. Some of the second stars are a bit iffy for me. I would prefer a bit more of an alternate path or secret (that isn't completely obtuse), instead of just "play the level again, only with a slight detour". A lot of them come across to me as "easter eggs that the creator didn't want the player to miss so they put a star there so you would be forced to see it," sort of thing (Woods on Wheels comes to mind).

You know I was going to be really disappointed in that first level not being placed higher, but just when I started thinking that is when things got weird what with the pointless boss fight, random shortcut, dumb second star, and overall drop in quality for most of the cave section.

I joined the contest to have fun!
Would've had more fun had I not run into a block very quickly that didn't go away until the end of the contest, leaving me no time to get playtesters D:

I think the "crawling" part of the title refers to the fact that the infant metroids crawl along the floor rather than floating about like their older compatriots. It helps if you imagine the level is a story being told in the far future by a cranky, elderly metroid.

I think "Back in My Day They Crawled in Zebes" is my favorite level so far. It was such at neat blend of Metroid and Zelda 2.
The boss was a little disappointing, but still better than using rinkas and mother brain.

Gather the Uttermost Cold: Huh. Did anybody else notice the poorly masked Jumping Piranha Plant? That was kind of off-putting, seeing this fantastically sprited world, then to see that. Mind you, those masks are such a nuisance sometimes, so I understand how it happened.
Back in My Day They Crawled in Zebes: Yeah, I have to agree with 8bitgamer123 here. That midpoint was unbalanced, not to mention easy to miss.

I think the feedback people are getting over at the SMBX forums also encourages these "cookie-cutter levels". It just kind of seems... lifeless at this point, as people preserve their original and awesome ideas for the seasonal contests. And even then, flavour and originality can only beat "cookie-cutter levels" when they're insanely polished and have (which bothers me the most about the SMBX community's mindset) breathtaking atmosphere.
I do things. You can find them on my talkhaus site. https://enjl.talkhaus.com/

I guess I'm sorta middle road for this sort of thing. I love jankieness and gimmicks but I also love making the atmosphere for my level and prettying it up with background and foregrounds and making every landmass interesting to look at. (like can be seen in my last year's level)

Re: MaGL X2 - LUESoldat x Emotion OTP
Having played lots of SMBX forum stuff, they do tend to produce that "solid and pretty-looking but not strange or memorable" kind of level a lot. Not always, though.
The Metroid resprites totally made the second level. Midpoint was unbalanced, and Ridley didn't entirely work, but Link vs. the denizens of Zebes is something that needs to be experienced more.

Re: MaGL X2 - LUESoldat x Emotion OTP
Talkhaus levels are interesting, but I always feel like a lot of them cater directly to raocow and/or his style of humour. I feel like this is (sometimes) to the point where the level becomes more of a spectacle that relies on funny text and/or graphics to win him, or even the judges, over. This is why I started feeling sour towards the Big Boo replacement joke, because it's become so overdone at this point (right up there with "I hope I win").
Don't get me wrong - I know that this is a community about raocow, so naturally this is to be expected, but there are times where I feel like a truly great level is one that encompasses both the Talkhaus' quirks with the SMBX community's level of polish. Maybe we'll see some of those in the upper tiers. I think both sides have their own merits, but too much of either is a little iffy for my tastes.

Re: MaGL X2 - LUESoldat x Emotion OTP
Well, yeah -- truly great levels have solid craftsmanship AND compelling cores, and I think both communities have level designers that can produce those. I'm expecting the top of this contest to showcase that. (And the worst levels often don't have either.) It's the levels halfway where the differences in priorities stand out the most -- when the creator put in good effort in a flawed way, where did they focus? I think that's what ends up showcasing the differences between these sub-sub-cultures we have here.S.N.N. wrote:Talkhaus levels are interesting, but I always feel like a lot of them cater directly to raocow and/or his style of humour. I think Big Boo sprite replacements can be funny without being funny because raocow finds them funny
Re: MaGL X2 - LUESoldat x Emotion OTP
Completely fair. You design for the community you're in afterall and there's definitely a very different sense of what gets remembered and appreciated. I do agree a lot of the best levels are the point where that sort of crazy inventiveness mixes with polish and refinement though.
Though, I disagree on the Big Boo thing; I find it's a pretty simple way to bring a smile to a player/viewer's face without much cost, unless you're trying to do a heavily atmospheric level. Same with I Hope I Win, it's a question of whether at least some thought to do something interesting is involved (Although I Hope I Win does require a bit of in-joke knowledge); and I don't think boo replacements have ever genuinely changed someone's grading of a level because of how small of a thing it is

Re: MaGL X2 - LUESoldat x Emotion OTP
Basically if it could make someone who's completely ignorant of talkhaus culture at least smirk, it should be OK. IMO. So that would include Big Boo resprites but exclude IHIW.
That's kinda the weird thing though, it's easy to pander to raocow because he and a small cadre of satellite personages are the only ones who'll ever play it.

Most uses of "I hope I win" are mediocre at best, but I will admit that the one recent boss where it ever-so-subtly dropped from the ceiling was a fresh take on it (and pretty cute).Garlyle wrote:Same with I Hope I Win, it's a question of whether at least some thought to do something interesting is involved (Although I Hope I Win does require a bit of in-joke knowledge)
Re: MaGL X2 - LUESoldat x Emotion OTP
I know the first level I made specifically for Talkhaus was Danger! Disco! for ASMBXT. When I went to make this level, the first thing I did was look at the differences between Talkhaus and SMBX design that were so controversial in the then-somehwat-recent Tower of Biased 2 LP and determine what I needed to do differently than usual in the design to appeal to the Talkhaus audience (primarily making the level shorter than I usually would, and a more linear design with none of the backtracking the SMBX community loved so much at that time). While I feel I missed the point in some regards (nor do I think the level was particularly memorable), I can at least say it was well received. I think that testifies in part to the value of at least attempting to create what you think your audience will enjoy.Garlyle wrote:Completely fair. In other news, all of this talk of the best levels being ones with polish and yet identity make me happy, as I really feel I captured that in my own level!

First level today had a great outdoor section; second level today also had a great outdoor section, but I'm not sure if I enjoy the palette in the Zebes part. Good designs overall though.

The farther we get into the contest, the more it feels like my level is an amalgamation of all the other levels before it.

That toad telling us about the SPECIAL GUESTS makes me think of people like Pholtos or BK or something.
