The 2014th Smoo Central Vanilla Contest
Re: The 2014th Smoo Central Vanilla Contest
So yeah, that's it. I'm sure it's obvious that first place, while being a great level fundamentally, probably should have ranked a bit lower. I personally didn't agree with it (my top three would have been Cavern of Pandora = One Sunday Morning (can't decide) -> Snake Eater), but at the same time I think the majority of the levels that ended up in the victory world deserved to be there.
Glad you enjoyed it raocow, it was really pleasant to watch. I'm currently in the process of piecing together the 8th VLDC's ROM (currently waiting on one more judge to get their results in), and then that'll be tested and released. If it's something you're interested in when the time comes, I'll toss the link your way.
Thanks to everyone who watched/had fun with it.

Yeah I'm glad this LP existed because I tried playing this game a while back but i totally suck at smw, but now I got to see all the things
Well it is a decent hack but sometime its just too repetitif there no level that actually pop in your face and your like oh yeah that level they all ressemble themselves and just monster along the way.

Re: The 2014th Smoo Central Vanilla Contest
I'm looking forward to at least one Cavern of Pandora ripoff appearing in every future vanilla contest held after this one until the heat death of the universe. (Not really.)

If anyone asks, I was very consistent at updating the OP. Capisci?

Man, Blazing Peak was super fun to watch, even if much more could have been done with it.

I haven't played a smw hack in ages, this thing, although not entirely great (obviously duh) reminded me of how fun it can be. I also never knew Morsel was such a fuckin monster in level design and level aesthetics. A+ job guy and to everyone else in the top tier.

There's no other choice, you'll have to rerecord the video. Chop chop.

And like that, it's over! I'm glad you had fun with it, raocow. I hope it made up for SMWCP at any rate! There were lots of solid levels in last year's contest, and I fully hope it's set some kind of precedent for the future.

Don't they just use the Luna Tower style?

I know I'm a bit late but playing this game was super fun and the OW just makes it a real adventure to play!
Super pumped for the 8th contest!

Re: The 2014th Smoo Central Vanilla Contest
If you don't mind people being able to skip a lot of the level once they've gone through it once, there's the 'put a smw star on a unique layer and have an event that happens when that layer's empty' trick, which is what a2mbxt's final level ended up using.Sebby19 wrote:thanks ditocoaf for clarifying what I said.

More on topic, the second place level was really neat, especially that second half with the fast platforms. First place was also neat, but it felt a bit odd not having the top place making a complete mockery of the original intent of the vanilla graphics. Oh well; maybe this year's winner will be more satisfying on that front.

I really enjoy these smw contests and this one was no exception. Good job everyone !!
Also morsel's level reminded me of that one SNN level as well. Though I think raocow meant magl instead of chocolate contest

When are dagadons worth picking up? I suspect the answer is never.
Re: The 2014th Smoo Central Vanilla Contest
Just feeling compelled again to explain the cutoff at the end: It's due to a bug Lunar Magic had at the time (secondary entrances were counted as sprites and the level would extend as far as the rightmost one), and got introduced during the compiling.
That aside, feels pretty great to have raocow play stuff I made. And yeah, I'm surprised myself it came in as high as third.
