I managed to play NiGHTS and megaman 8 pretty well with Ssf. ill see how it works with castlevaniatomorrow after work. Right now.

It works, though the emulator seems to have some issues, its fully playable.

It's kind of sad. Most people consider the Saturn version, despite its random flaws here and there, to be the definitive version... but when it came time to port SotN, they went with the PSX version for... reasons. I'd like to see a remastered release (on Steam, maybe?) that includes all the Saturn content without any of its drawbacks.

Personally, I'd say the biggest improvement to the Saturn version, from what I've read, sounds like the item that lets Alucard dash forward just like Richter. That would have been *extremely* useful for getting around quickly.

reason is "oh my god saturn emulation is so hard, and there's already ps1 emulators on the psp, lets do that instead". though if they could mod it enough to add maria, i dunno why they couldnt add the saturn exclusive area too.

Guess I'll give the saturn version more of a try tomorrow, see if i can unlock the exclusive areas.

Haha, raocow got knocked off the boat by a bat before getting the holy symbol and had to tank water damage to reach the other side.

Haha, so did I on my first time playing. With how fast the boat actually moves and how far a simple bat can send Alucard flying, it's surprisingly difficult to stay on the boat, especially when you don't know what's coming up.

raocow: try using back-forward-attack with the Holy Rod.

Weapon notes!

- The Holy Rod is one of my favorite first-half-of-the-game weapons. Fast, wide area of attack, and it's Holy-element, meaning that a lot of enemies are weak to it - such as the Lesser Demon, which is why raocow was able to butcher that boss so quickly. One thing to note: the Holy Rod does NOT count as a blunt weapon (or "Hit"-element, as the game calls it). If you're looking to hit that weakness, you'll need to swap to something like the Jeweled Knuckles or Nunchaku. Speaking of which:

- The Nunchaku are really more like tonfa. With them equipped, Alucard automatically attacks twice with each button press. They have better range than the Jeweled Knuckles, but in my opinion that doesn't really overcome the drawback of not being able to equip an offhand weapon or shield. They see a lot more use if the player (1) doesn't know about the Jeweled Knuckles secret, and (2) tackles the Underground Caverns before the Chapel.

- Nothing special to note or comment on regarding the Damascus Sword. It's exactly what it seems: a decently powerful "normal" Cut-element sword.

- Finally, raocow picked up one last weapon at the end of the video: the Takemitsu, which is a bamboo practice sword. Very little point (har) to this weapon. It's two-handed (like the Nunchaku) but only swings once per press, is very slow, and is very weak (I think only +1 attack power). Its only unique property is that it's a "sword" with the Hit element (rather than the Cut element). But you've got the Hit element well-covered with Jeweled Knuckles and/or Nunchaku.

raocow, you bought a ring, but never equipped it. Also, de-equip your jewels, you can't sell them if they are equipped.

I think I would have used that summon spirit in that one hallway with the tons of enemies, and maybe the boss. How useful is that thing? How long does it stick around, and can it do more than 9 damage?

Oh noes, the mudman has been missed! D: Y'know, not that anyone cares for the LP, but in a game full of not-missables, that sure is an unpleasant thing to realize 5-10 hours after fighting the Lesser Demon.

I don't think he bought a ring. He considered buying the Ring of Pales (a mistranslation - it's really a Pearl ring), but bought the scroll and the Damascus Sword instead. You're right about him needing to deequip his jewels in order to sell them.

The Diamond Plate is a good buy. If raocow sells all of the rest of his jewels he will probably have enough or almost enough.

I'm surprised raocow didnt try to get to that one room near the waterfall before he left,

which would have gotten him a decent shield if he ever decides to use one (it gives you a single heart for every projectile blocked) as well as opened up that other wood bridge and gotten him the life and heart max up, and then opened up the caves/catacomb areas. And theres a weapon down there I'm sure he'd love (probably)

I don't believe he can make that jump in his current situation, anyway.

He can actually, all you need is the double jump, you just have to take the jump from the rocky outcropping just below the start of the waterfall.

and since i'm horrible at descriptions here's an image to show what I mean
Image this normally meant you'd have to tank like 5 water damage but since he has the holy symbol (snorkel) he doesnt even need to worry about that

also raowcow the next time you fall down the waterfull just hug the waterfall-side wall bc item

So raocow chose the clock tower path first. I guess he needs to TURN on all the Cog Wheels till you HEAR the CLICK! sound.

To be fair raocow, that part is really stupid, i've beaten the game like 5 times but I still didn't really know what those gears did

(also all you missed in that one room with the throwing item was a stick of tnt, just a use item that does fire damage)

How did they manage to make turning into a wolf the most stupid and pointless powerup?

By gating off its cooler abilities until after the player collects more relics.

The Medusa Shield! Congrats, raocow - that's a rare drop. And though shields aren't generally your favorite, I think you'll be interested in this. Why? Because, if Alucard holds it in front of him, he can ram it into enemies to hurt them. That's a rare property for a shield to have in this game - and one that well-suits your offense-focused playstyle.

It also, as you might expect, prevents you from being turned to stone while equipped (so like the Mirror Cuirass, but better, in that you don't need to bear with the reduced Defense that the Mirror Cuirass brings).

Given how powerful the Holy Rod is at this stage of the game - making weapon-swapping less important right now - you may want to try putting away the Damascus Sword and equipping the Medusa Shield in your offhand.

Also, since the Clock Tower gear puzzle has already been explained, one other word of advice that may help if you try it but things don't seem to be working...
...make sure not to accidentally hit a gear again after it's already clicked. If you do accidentally hit a gear too many times, thus getting another loud "chunk" sound after the "click," you've effectively reset that gear - and then you need to keep hitting it again until it clicks again.

You'll know when the gears are all properly set.
