You're playing Super Mario World (ascetic), which you're BREEZING THROUGH right now (and which has videos that almost never fall below 10 minutes), and Nitroid, a game of which you upload videos quite irregularly, and you just uploaded a sub-3 minute video of you solving a single difficult puzzle, and your joy at solving it is so vast that you make noises no man has ever heard before.

I do not think there could possibly be a greater contrast than that.

Indeed, the contrast is very strong, what with SMW still being a great game and Nitori being a terrible one.

I've played through just about the entire game now w/o savestates, and apart from a few minor sections (
a really nasty jump involving some noteblocks and falling flowers, a visible kaizo trap, and an unnecessary bullet hell section after the phanto level's midpoint
) the game is pretty well made. The difficulty curve is gradual, albeit very jagged, and unless something totally unexpected happens in bowser's castle, this game goes from :P :P :P difficulty to world 5 or 6 difficulty of hyper VI. ...Its essentially like starting a Japanese romhack halfway through (i.e. the fun part).

I'd also like to point out to all you peeps comparing difficult romhacks to nitroid that nitroid's physics aren't nearly as refined, nor is raocow used to dealing with them. The irregularity of the videos (with the exception of the last one) is almost completely due to crazy puzzles, of which S Mario has none. It's an unfair comparison; there are much more similarities between the proposed game and things like Kouhi, which raocow enjoyed a lot. To be blunt I think y'all are aware of that but are just choosing to ignore it.

peteyboo wrote:Didn't someone say that the final level was "100 times harder than anything in Hyper 6"?

Even if that's an exaggeration, that doesn't exactly instill me with confidence that any of the game is going to be not-super-hard.
I said that because I'm the one making it. Don't let it discourage you though... what I'm doing has no correlation to what everyone else is doing for A2MT. I'm just taking advantage of my leverage with raocow to be completely unreasonable and spite everyone who complains about difficulty.

...that, or it's just how I design things anyway. :P

I was going to comment in response, but it looks like from what I read the hack isn't impossible after all. Also, if raocow wants to do a gimmick hack, then perhaps the difficulty is worth it.

Well I wouldn't necessarily call World 5 "fun". World 6 maybe, but I think I prefer World 8. That might be a bit too much to just jump right into though.

And I think all the levels (about two and a half, only one of which still exists) I've made are unfairly hard. Also vanilla because I suck at everything not called Lunar Magic (probably because i don't focus enough on it). Although, maybe "unfair" isn't proper, except the very end. If I added a midpoint, I'm sure it'd be doable... Ahahaha now I almost want to show and/or release it for the rage and detraction that I'll get for it.

I'm gonna go ahead and join the "you should play S. Mario" camp.

Now I've only played the first four levels so far, and while they were quite difficult, they were also extremely fun! (especially the latter two I played) The levels just feel so...exciting!

But yeah like I said, I just started, so I don't have any idea of just how hard it will get. Seems promising though.

Well We got what, three days AT THE VERY MAX of ascetic run left, more probably two, so if I could get some early translations that would be swell... Don't need the whole thing, just enough to get started.

Here's World 1. It's hard. I imagine it will take you a few days to get through even just that, so you're in good shape, but I can do some more tomorrow.

This hack knows how to be amazing.

When I saw that you said I sucked, I immediately opened up S. Mario, turned on the ZSNES recording, and attempted to record myself beating the first two levels...
Well... I did it! It's just that... I did the first level which took me down from 99 lives to 97 lives, and then the second level took me down from 97 lives to... 33... >_>
I think I might be proving your earlier point by uploading this video...

Either way, you have to take into consideration that I was playing at 11 at night, and there were other people in the room with me, and then my brother who gets WAY too excited over hockey decided to hop up and down on the couch I was on, and it all added up to me sucking more that I probably should have... Not that I should really make excuses, but I beat the level nonetheless, and that's all that matters...?

I think that my biggest problem was that I screwed up a few times, got pressured because I was recording, started to suck again, eventually got good, realized I got good, causing me to suck until my brain eventually got into a really specific pattern that helped me beat the level.
I seem to have a big problem with things like this where if I don't do it quickly enough, I get worse and worse, so... Yeah. EXCUSES! :D

But in the end, I'll admit, it was a fun 45 minutes...
The level design always threw something new at you, and it really helped spice things up! Although, I'm still not a fan of the turno-spitting plants. Sometimes they would shoot before they were even on screen, and you would have little to no reaction time... Although, as you could see, most of my deaths weren't from that... They were more from me being stupid and throwing myself down holes...

Anyway, I'm uploading the video right now, but it says it's got 1013 minutes remaining (the raw clip from ZSNES was 45 minutes long, but after editing it was whittled down to 13 minutes, but for some reason Pinnacle studio [which I don't usually use to edit; Sony Vegas wouldn't give me an audio track for some reason] gave it a 2gb+ file size. >_> The worst part about it is that the quality looks worse than 240p...)
So... Yeah... It will be up when it's up... Oh, and just a heads-up, the audio gets about a half second delay by the end of the video.

Well... That got off topic...
Oh! And we're all good! I'm not mad at you or anything! I just wanted to prove that I don't suck (which didn't quite work out like I planned). Haha!

Edit: Wow... how did Pinnacle studio do that!?
The raw video was better quality and was 45 minutes rather than 13, and it was only around 350mb, while this 13 minute version is 2gb+! Maybe I'll just upload the raw video and you can skip through it to your liking...

Edit: I think I'll just re-render the video with different settings. Nobody will want to sit through a 45 minute video of just Mario... At least not without commentary. :P

Man, now I feel like a jerk. Don't let me call into question your game-playing abilities. You're clearly very good Ashanmaril.

Seriously, that's better than 99% of what most people could do. The only reason it took me 4 or 5 lives is because I had already been playing some pit-type hacks beforehand and I was at the top of my game. Smw is one of my best games so its not fair for me to say if people are good or bad. My opinion was objectively wrong.

It's nothing you need to feel bad about, really! It was just one of those "challenge accepted" moments where you feel the need to prove yourself worthy... It's just that I put a little too much time into doing so... xD

Either way, I guess it's better that you said it, because it gave me a reason to upload another video, which I haven't been doing much of lately. I went from daily uploads to next to none REALLY quickly, so I always feel better about myself when I have an excuse to upload a video. :P

Either way, we're all good! No hard feelings! :D

Edit: So... Uh... Do what you want to, raocow! Assuming S. Mario doesn't get impossible near the end-game, that's a choice, I suppose!

Oh! And I tried out the third level, and it turns out the game has some ASM gimmicks too, so there's a perk!

Good lord 1-6. I mean, wow. I just lost 50 lives in the level with 46 of those deaths in the first 10 seconds. Anyone manage to beat that level yet?

Three questions.

1) Does Rao enjoy Commander Keen 4-6? I honestly have only ever seen his LPs of the Vorticons trilogy.
2) If so, would Rao be willing to play at least the 'first' episode of The Universe Is Toast by Ceilick?
3) Has this been suggested before?

Why didn't I know there are keen mods? I'm personally still hoping for a keen 4-6 LP (or at least a one off)..

Gourmet Race looks amusing, though if it is staying true to the source material (which, from the screenshots it seems to be) it would just be a run as fast as you can through the level thing, which usually is not my cup of tea (I usually like slower paced, exploration based thingies) but I may try it out, hopefully it will hook me. Thanks for finding this stuff raocow.

Gourmet Race and GM look pretty cool, but EX just looks...bad. Yeah, those are all based on just the few screenshots provided, so that could be wildly inaccurate but still.

I got to world 3-2 the day the link was posted in this thread, but I haven't played it since. That's definitely one of the hardest levels for a while, along with 2-1. After that, there's really only 2 other ultra-difficult stages.

This is a little (six level) demo but it is pretty awesome for what it is and I don't really know where else you would go with the idea anyway. Maybe it could fill a gap?

Are the people recommending these even playing them?

GM: Broken garbage. Completely unplayable.

EX: For an atrocious touhou hack, this is pretty good. It's only one (huge) level though. I liked it, anyway.

O: Two world demo. Nice graphics, I suppose. Nothing else too interesting. Broken overworld paths.

I have no idea how you could call Nitroid a terrible game. Yes, it's difficult in the end game, but go back to some of raocow's earlier video's and you'll see he had a very good time playing them. Slightly challenging, but so much more rewarding in the end. I find the exploitation of glitches to help you succeed rather funny actually, but definately an annoyance.

I'm pretty sure there have been harder Mario hacks honestly, but then again the engines are completely different so, I guess I cant use that as a way to bias difficulty.
Gormet Race looks like It has some interesting gimmicks. Wether or not difficulty comes into play is a whole 'nother story.

And I'm all up for a Touhou hack, but some of the design choices for Ex Mario seem a bit.... horrible. (That apple level...?) :|

It is good fun although it is only really good for a few minutes. Maybe a little filler piece next time recording doesn't go so well?
