Re: request grab-bag
I have heard of a sentiment that SMM irreversibly damaged the SMW hacking scene. Whether that is true or not, I don't know, but if there is some sort of bitterness/bad blood/whatever, that is likely why.

Re: request grab-bag
This is mostly a Japanese thing I think, mostly due to stricter copyright laws and their enforcement by Nintendo. I don't think Super Mario Maker really affected non-Japanese SMW hacking scene, in fact I would say it helped it.Kilgamayan wrote: ↑3 years ago I have heard of a sentiment that SMM irreversibly damaged the SMW hacking scene. I wonder if it impacted the Japanese hacking scene, given the low rate of PC ownership over there as-is. Koba mentioned the Japanese hacking scene seems to have collapsed like a wet cake.

Re: request grab-bag
am I the only one who remembers that the magl x2 postgame had level designers have to leave because of pressure from nintendo?
...and this wasn't even my point in the first place why are we hung up on this? We'd still need a recording solution. (disclaimer: I do not have a wii u or switch so I don't know if there's a built-in recording solution)

Re: request grab-bag
No, but I am the only one who remembers that it turned out that it was just their (one level designer, btw) own personal choice because they were "worried" about Nintendo rather than any actual quantitative pressure, and found Horikawa's pre-reveal description of that as "Mario maker existing was DIRECTLY responsible for a dev not being able to make a level" to be misleading nonsense.

Re: request grab-bag
mario maker burned our crops poisoned our water supply and delivered a plague onto our houses!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
for what it is worth i am making jp tutorials of modern tools for people who want to make smw hacks after a few smw hackers were like "do it". even if there isnt much of a result...
i am pro smm playthroughs if only for more mario and to serve for capture card practice for when we get to 06.

Re: request grab-bag
I don't see why this supposed "bad blood" would prevent raocow from playing SMM?
This is what he said about Mario Maker. He also shared in video a Mario Maker level code at least one time. And he's still playing SMW romhacks, so he's not abandoning that field in favor of a Nintendo game.

Re: request grab-bag
I personally would be WAY more excited to see a level design contest thing in Mario Maker 2 than any other hack stuff. As far as pure creative possibilities goes I think SMM2 is leaps and bounds ahead of vanilla SMW hacking at this point, even before this new update. And after this new update it's arguably even up to par with SMBX.
The only major things vanilla SMW hacking has over SMM2 are the secret exits and the fact that it's free and anyone can use it whereas this game requires a subscription. Which, I guess I can understand why raocow/the talkhaus might still prefer it for those reasons... Eh, whatever that's just my 2 cents. Personally I've had my fill of the SMW engine way long ago so I mostly only watch those videos for background noise these days.

Re: request grab-bag
no one hacks smw in talkhaus anymore but me and like two other peoplewarpio wrote:Which, I guess I can understand why raocow/the talkhaus might still prefer it for those reasons...
I feel like there's still a lot that's possible within choco SMW and the SNES' restrictions but it's certainly less accessible than just booting up SMM2 and going ham with your creative juices using what's available. As someone who is actually doing okay-ish balancing pixel art, music and ASM, yet still struggles with levels, I really do still feel SMW isn't really something meant for the common consumer.
We really shouldn't be seeing LM and SMM as competitors though, but rather as counterparts. SMM for those who value simplicity and LM for those who value total (or near-total, cough fusoya) control. Here is a pastebin by Doctor No that best describes this way better than I ever could.
I will implore you to please not sweep all of SMW hacking under the same rug as vanilla because bland, beginner's first SMW hack vanilla isn't all SMW hacking does. It'd be equivalent to sweeping all of SMBX into no Lua usage, base SMBX. Here are some examples of interesting hacks that have had their threads updated recently (up to the beginning of this year).warpio wrote: I personally would be WAY more excited to see a level design contest thing in Mario Maker 2 than any other hack stuff. And even then 2 Mice was up to par with Lua'd SMBX in terms of creativity. SIG and VLDCX are just rather dull to watch someone play, but again, this is basically part hobby part job so I won't fault raocow for finding those interesting for himself to play.

Wow. WOW. This thread is 9 years old. I feel old.
This is how I have my "I feel old" moments apparently, not movies or songs, but forum posts.
(Yes I know my account isn't even that old. I lurked for a while before signing up for an account. I remember I started lurking to read the ASMT LP thread, and I signed up to post in the "Ryu plays ASMT" thread. Oh man, that play is probably lost to time. :( )

Re: request grab-bag
Now that raocow's Half-Life 2 playthrough has opened a bunch of possibilities for first-person games, I REALLY want him to tackle Mirror's Edge and Mirror's Edge Catalyst. They're some of my favorite games and I think he would appreciate how they're more open-ended and fluid compared to a lot of other first-person games!!
Not to mention how they just OOZE style like damn

I'd like to say this is the perfect opportunity for raocow to take on Perfect Dark, but it can be pretty damn hard above Agent, especially if you're going in blind

I was reading what's coming next thread and I thought it would be interesting to do ascetic run in some SMW hack. Like for example ascetic run of VIP 1.

Re: request grab-bag
I don't think it would be feasible at all. romhacks kinda put coins right in your face, whereas nintendo (up to a certain era anyways) tended to be more minimal with them.
