Rockythetigre wrote: 3 years ago hey, I'd like to request an smw hack that I am pretty stoked to see released. I am talking about Evil Conquest 2 - a chocolate (choconilla?) hack created by darkdlp02 and luks. The levels seem to be high quality and the levels they are releasing all seem to have a fun concept with cool level design. It's going to be pretty fun I think and it's been in development for a very long time.
Luks from the hack's thread on SMWC wrote: - W6, previously a misty bay area has been changed too a really spooky swamp with scaaaary ghosties and gore/jumpscare rooms (kinda like game.bps).
yeah can we not??????? especially considering raocow's aversion to bones and facial damage

p.s. i really fucking hate how every hack ever has to be categorized into vanilla/chocolate/choconilla boxes like that's really dumb and boring and reduces games to simple "oh this is super mario world, BUT IT USES CUSTOM ASSETS"
"oh this is super mario world, BUT IT ONLY USES LUNAR MAGIC"
"oh this is super mario world, BUT THIS JUST USES CUSTOM MUSIC AND GRAPHICS OR SOMETHING no one is clear on what choconilla really is"

only mario fans do that and it's all smw's fault

can you imagine if like doom or pokémon did that?

Pokemon has some categories of its own.

New stories, new Pokemon, new types, adds physical/special split since most of them are Fire Red hacks...

Dunno about Doom.

Yeah but like imagine if there was such an emphasis put on "i literally altered nothing of the game except for the levels and overworld and whatever asm hacks fusoya did to make the game actually editable"

I get that it's an exercise in minimalism and letting your level design shine through instead of relying on cheap gimmicks like new artwork or under-used mechanics but like 75% of SMWC's underaged userbase can't pull it off because they understand nothing of game design other than "I played a Mario game once" and ends up making games that are more boring to play through than a literal youtube hack because they do literally nothing different from SMW, you literally might as well just be playing SMW, it is far better

I'm sorry if this is elitist, I'm not saying that no one should make vanilla hacks, but being able to pull it off and having a good understanding of level design and making your stages unique and memorable through their gameplay alone is a huge part in making or breaking your vanilla hack and honestly reason #1 as to why I would absolutely Not recommend beginners to start making exclusively vanilla hacks outside of practicing with private hacks, sharing with friends and experienced hackers they're close with to get feedback and whatnot, before tackling anything different

Hell, tackling chocolate hacks as early as possible, after learning the basics of Lunar Magic, would be good to get a good feel on how inserting things with tools work, maybe even making some assets of their own if they feel like they're up to the challenge

Sorry for the derail it's just, I have a lot of problems with how SMWC handles creativity and game design
Yes, I know, it's a hobby, you still can't just ignore the fundamentals of game design

there kinda is like, a Genre for pokemon hacks being "I used [pokemon stat and trainer editors] and nothing else", usually rebalances or having new features/pokemon
kinda justified in that making an actual overworld is many orders of magnitude more work, though, than an overarching gimmick to twist the game

An addendum. Thinking about it on YK's server and honestly I think raocow would enjoy Alien Soldier. It's a tough as nails, arcade-y game that focuses on a run n gun style boss rush. It's honestly amazingly good, but it requires some getting used to the controls. The protag is also a really hot furry.

🐦

I also thought about showing raocow Sengoku TURB, a Japanese only sorta proto-Dynasty Warriors type pseudo-ARPG??? meets ASMT on the Dreamcast. He showed interest, since the big draw to it is that it looks like hot garbage and its completely ridiculous? But I did have second thoughts about letting him play it later on because the gameplay is pretty repetitive and can drag on for a while. Maybe just a small Voxatron style intermission?

The gist of the gameplay is basically clearing all of the enemies in short fields and advancing the plot with cutscene intermissions in between (which could use a translation just to get the lols flowin, I'm sure a playthrough is available on Nico or something). A makeshift manual to help raocow navigate the menus, and figure out what does what would help (though equipping items is basically a deal of what has the higher number, especially when it comes to weapon range because melee weapons fucking suck ass).

Some gameplay videos are here:

That seems like it would be a hilarious shit show. I only played a few hours of it but I'm fairly decent at puzzle games and had a lot of trouble with some of the ones I did.

The Joy of Kaizo With Bob Ross.

More specifically, the beginner difficulty for it. Seen recorded streams of it, and it's really fun!

The other two difficulties wouldn't be as good, probably, though. nyoro~n

I've seen the whole hack. It's a nice kaizo hack sure, but kaizo hacks aren't conducive to let's plays at all really. Also, I like how raocow plays non-kaizo hacks, which everyone else plays way too much of.

no disrespect to kaizo hacks but they're unavoidable at this point haha

I haven't played it, not sure if I'll ever play that one but I've seen enough of it and been watching raocow for like a decade or so. That is not a hack fitting of his tastes.

So I forget what raocow's said about Guacamelee 2 but I beat the game, currently very close to 100%ing it, and it's been a thoroughly great experience with a single short but notable exception in the area I'm currently in. It's not especially bad, just a rough part of an otherwise stellar game, and going by what folks were saying in discordhaus it sounds like it's the exception.

So yeah, looking at the current b-side lineup I wouldn't be surprised if rao wouldn't get to it until like 2020 at the earliest? But Guac 2 is absolutely worth playing.

I believe he already said he'd get to it eventually. Plus, it's already on the list for the next patapon spotzone vote, along with things like SMBF and Rayman Legends.

Voting actually hasn't started or anything; I'm just keeping a list of stuff that should appear from the start when the next Patapon Poll happens (stuff he said he'd play/was interested in, birthday/christmas gifts, sequels/dlc, and all the games from the last poll that made the 2nd round)
Kilgamayan wrote: 3 years ago Also, is Touhou Luna Nights on that list?
Yes; he stated interest in the patapon spotzone when someone posted it.

I just wanted to mention that VLDC 11 has been finished. There is no planned collab, so you can play it any time. This contest had more strict rules than VLDCX and also used special features of Lunar Magic 3.0 (that can make to change levels size into closer to SMBX and many more). The contest felt overall better than VLDCX (for me too - I finally managed to avoid Worst 10).
