A Monkey plays Video Games

Post by MonkeyShrapnel »

Yo, I'm MonkeyShrapnel and I play video games!

...Yeah, I know that a lot of the folks here do, but I digress.

I also like to record it and talk while I'm doing it, I hear the cool kids call it "Let's Play".

Here's some links to the better stuff I've done.

(This of course implying that much of what I've done is hot garbage, I hope you check it out anyways.)

Super Mario Bros. The Lost Levels

Donkey Kong Land 3 (In Colour!)

Donkey Kong Country 2 Lost Levels (ROM Hack)

Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong-Quest

Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie's Double Trouble

You can find other stuff in the various posts I make below, keeping in mind that the quality of my commentary is all over the board.

Brian plays Donkey Kong Land 3 In Colour!

Post by MonkeyShrapnel »

Donkey Kong Land 3 has an interesting localization behind it. It was released for the Game Boy and Super Game Boy with plenty of cool little aesthetics and such in the design of it.

Then, 3 years later, a Game Boy Colour Version was released putting the game into full colour!

However, it was only released in Japan, and it seems that in the process of doing so, many things were removed from the game, most changes didn't affect game play at all but did remove from the game's pleasing to look at graphics.

Then Blazikin257 came along.

He created a patch for the game that not only translates the game into english, but fixes many other things as well!

Check it out here: Blazikin257's Patch Page

The Codes you enter at the main menu apply to everything you do until the game is reset, so you sure can!

The super hard AI is otherwise only used in the purple boss trophy race.

This is a DKC 2 ROM hack I found a while ago, it's actually fairly well designed and has some features like modified music and graphics changes in a game where that technology doesn't really exist yet, manual labour is powerful y'all!

A Monkey plays a hard rom hack of DKC 2

Post by MonkeyShrapnel »

DKC 2 ROM hacking is not even close to the extent of ease and prowess of SMW, but that doesn't mean we don't have people who are trying.

Let's take this ROM hack known as DKC 2 Lost Levels

Rather than focusing on making a more difficult game like the few hacks that exist do, the author has instead focused on making levels that have a unique flair to them, something that stands out, instead of being a difficulty hack.

Of course, that fall out of wack as we get farther in, but it's still an experience.

A Monkey plays Super Mario Logic

Post by MonkeyShrapnel »

So I saw this ROM hack on SMWCentral and thought that it look nice and interesting.

It's basically just a bunch of one room puzzles that you have to solve.

Considering it's been ages since I recorded anything, I figured that this was a good game to get back into the mix with.

A Monkey plays Pokemon Crystal Randomiser

Post by MonkeyShrapnel »

Yeah, in the past I tried playing through vanilla Crystal, but it was...bad to say the least, due to me being bad at commentating a game I know well.

So why not play through a completely random version of the game?

The first couple of parts are a bit on the long side, to say the least but I've ironed that out in later parts, so feel free to not watch Part 1 and 2 if you're not into longer videos.

...or feel free not to watch at all, since I'm not that great of an LPer anyways...

Err, but I digress.

Re: A Monkey plays Super Mario Bros. 3

Post by MonkeyShrapnel »

What a game this is.

Commonly considered to be one of the best games on the NES, SMB 3 manages to create tons of interesting levels, peaks your interest in finding secrets, and just in general has a ton to offer anyone with even a remote interest in platformers.

Not surprising, Nintendo has constantly referred to this game during the creation of future Mario games.

Perhaps overly so though.

Re: A Monkey plays ROM hacks about magic keyes

Post by MonkeyShrapnel »

The Hunt For The Magical Key, maybe not the most popular rom hack, but one of the first good ones I ever saw.

I think Dinowulf on SMWC summed up all my thoughts about this ROM hack.

Great music choices, fun levels that rarely drag on too long other than a few exceptions(usually related to bosses),
interesting design, and a fun overworld.

The only big problem here are the bosses, if you've never seen this game before, you'll get to "enjoy" the bosses with me.

Nevertheless, let's get going.

Re: A Monkey plays Donkey Kong Country

Post by MonkeyShrapnel »

The Donkey Kong Country series is arguably the best platforming series of all time.

Bright, colourful, detailed environments.

Smooth, precise, satisfying gameplay and controls.

Diverse, interesting level design, the list goes on.

DKC 1 is a bit of an oddball compared to the sequels, but still hold true to the principles of the series.

I'll be talking about various topics as we go through the game 101%.

Remember all that stuff I said about Donkey Kong Country
being a great game?

Well, take all that, and multiply it.

That's Donkey Kong Country 2.

Arguably one of the greatest platformers ever made, it mixes together unique, pleasant looking environments with
tight, enjoyable platforming gameplay, and has some of the most satisfying secrets to find in all of gaming.

Seriously, DKC 2 managed to improve upon nearly every aspect of the original game.

And that soundtrack yo...

Donkey Kong Country 3 is a bit of a black sheep among the DKC series,
but personally, I've always thought it was underrated.

Though it changes things up a lot, and has a bigger focus on gimmicks,
this game has its own share of interesting ideas, and looks as good as you'd expect from this series.

Maybe I can change your opinion?
Well, I'm not counting on that one.
