Oyster "Translations"

As someone who is learning Japanese, yes.
Also, raocow should play all the VIPs again! <_<

You have the community's blessing, even though I am far from speaking for the community.

If you are actually translating the in-game boxes, my fear is that you will litteraly have not enough space in some areas!

Re: Oyster "Translations"
Yeah, getting all the text to fit can be difficult. And translation notes would probably be better in an external readme or something.
I considered doing my usual text file thing for all the VIPs prior to 5 (this was probably around the time VIP5 came out), but gave up on it. (I will say that "Obligatory" seems like a slightly better word there than "Cliche," as it's a pretty generic warning.)

Re: Oyster "Translations"
I think "Obligatory Warning" would work in that situation. Obligatory is one of those words that are generally only used in a joking sense because it's too "smart" of a word otherwise, or something. Of course, "A bit cliche" actually fits in the text box, so... I dunno, maybe just doing a text file would be appropriate so that you can always get an accurate and not-bad-looking translation. Plus, it's a bit less work on your end because IIRC, making text boxes in Lunar Magic is somewhat more annoying that just typing in Notepad.
Re: Oyster "Translations"
There is a patch that lets you have 2 rows of level name, but you have to enter the level names manually in hex. If you could find someone willing to do that, then you have double the space for writing level names (just send them the names and they'll insert for you)

Re: Oyster "Translations"
Wouldn't that be more like "Nastily Surprising"? I know it makes less sense, but the original name itself doesn't seem to make sense.Horikawa Otane wrote:I got that to... "Dodge barrage, go!" or thereabouts. Another fun one was "So unpleasant it's surprising," but I got that to "Surprisingly nasty!"

Re: Oyster "Translations"
Can I have some examples of Oyster completely missing the mark and what the actual title would be?
Not because I doubt you, I just think it's fun to laugh at other people's mistakes.

Re: Oyster "Translations"
One of the more notable ones I found (here) was "Dodge the Beefsteak!" which basically involved looking at the first thing that came up in a dictionary search. A better translation would probably be something like "Take the Place of the Enemy!", though my knowledge of Japanese is quite limited and there's probably an even better translation.

no I'm sorry 'dodge the beefsteak' is the single best level name

Re: Oyster "Translations"
It totally is, but alas, it's wrong in this case. As penance, someone must now put a legitimate "Dodge the Beefsteak" level in ASMBXT.raocow wrote:no I'm sorry 'dodge the beefsteak' is the single best level name
Re: Oyster "Translations"
It's awesome that you're undertaking this translation. To be sure, is this a "full" translation? As in, are you translating all the text or just the level names? Since I never got around to playing the VIPs I'll likely start with your version(s) once finished. Which reminds me, are you doing all the vips or just the first?
Also I put in a vote for leaving "Dodge the beefsteak" as the sole unchanged level title (with "Dodge the enemies" noted in a readme perhaps) in the same way that "You spoony bard!" is left unchanged in all FFIV remakes.

Given he managed to turned "vgboy" into "video guy", I'm a little apprehensive as to what raocow's going to do to this name.Horikawa Otane wrote:.

My Idea is, to use the Textbox-System from Yoshi´s Island! So will be solved the Problem easy. But that other Problem is, that you modify the Game without permission...raocow wrote:If you are actually translating the in-game boxes, my fear is that you will litteraly have not enough space in some areas!

I would think that something like a translation would be exempt from those rules. And even if it wasn't, couldn't someone ask for permission?Picochilla wrote:My Idea is, to use the Textbox-System from Yoshi´s Island! So will be solved the Problem easy. I think that just might happen, for better or for worse.
But hey, if DeceasedCrab can LP La-Mulana 3 times, then raocow can replay his favorite games too.

Welp, in "Eternal Puffer Fear/Fear of the Eternal Pufferfish", umm... this. It doesn't make the level unbeatable, but it does kinda defeat the purpose of the level. Maybe put the message box at the end?
Edit: I'm doing a test livestream tonight. Now that this is out, I'm going to be playing it instead of Wario's Woods. Details in the Stream topic >.>

And I'm totally sure that they asked Nintendo's permission before modifying SMW, right?Onyx3173 wrote:I would assume the creators of the hack would care seeing as they are the ones who said it in the first place.AUS wrote:Thirdly who cares
Re: Oyster "Translations"
How exactly is that relevant? Just because they didn't ask Nintendo for permission to make the VIP series means that it's perfectly okay to do whatever you want with their work when they've specifically requested people not to without permission?Ometeotl wrote:And I'm totally sure that they asked Nintendo's permission before modifying SMW, right?Onyx3173 wrote:I would assume the creators of the hack would care seeing as they are the ones who said it in the first place.AUS wrote:Thirdly who cares

The reason I would scoff at that is because the notion would be entirely hypocritical. I'm not sure why you're arguing so belligerently..
