If you need a life farming level, here's the one that I used.

In the northwest of the map, there's a plains level that Yoshi can land on. You can get about 4 lives in 10-15 seconds if you do it right. Just start + select and repeat until you're maxed out.

If you want to play this and other older hacks (Demo World, VIP 1,etc) without the majority of the slowdown, a useful trick (if you can use zsnes) is the following:

Open zsnesw.cfg in notepad.
Change "per2exec=100" to "per2exec=150".
Load the game you want to play from the title screen (don't load a savestate).

(Obviously, be prepared to change it back as this setting might affect any other game you play.)

Checking Lunar Magic, the Windows level(s) appears to be just a bonus/extra level. It's hard to tell what unlocks what sometimes when you're playing the game.

Yeah, I did this about a year ago and I didn't notice any slowdown in the game. It hasn't had any negative effects on other ZSNES games that I've noticed so far. It's a really simple fix that only takes a few seconds and completely eliminates slowdown.

Well not going to lie, this was my favorite raocow video in quite a while. Nothing beats a good old romhack.

Also yeah I'm at grass land myself and there's some insane slowdown in parts. And I'm playing on Snes9x which is supposed to be less laggy than ZSNES ugh

I think the intended solution at the end was to place the last shell below the switch, then grab the other shell for yoshi, and use his fart powers to knock the shell upward to hit the switch. I think everything else was right.

You know it's a Japanese hack when there is a switch palace filled to the brim with YI-styled ON/OFF blocks. At least this puzzle was pretty clever compared to some others I've seen in other J hacks.

It'd probably help if there was a horse-dispenser at the beginning of that level. raocow walks in without a yoshi, and sees that it's technically possible to throw the shells at the blocks to get through... I can totally see how he might assume that's the intended solution. There's no "hey dude you need a yoshi" gate until the end of the level.

I did the exact same thing as raocow in this level. You first beat the level as Mario chucking shells at the switches, so when you realize that you need Yoshi it's after the puzzle's "solution" is already burned into your memory. You're also frustrated and getting tired of playing at this point, so your mind just isn't in a good state to consider alternate methods for completing the level.

I didn't even realize that you could use Yoshi's magical farting powers to beat the level until Argumentable posted that video.

A favourite trivia question of mine has now been rendered somewhat obsolete: what's the link between The Mummy and Super Mario World romhacks? Why, Brendan Fraser, of course, who starred in that movie and was famously seen flying through the skies as a banzai bill replacement in An Super MWC Production.

Errr, just in advance (and coming from someone who played this game before), try and avoid the tower in the middle of the map until the end. It leads to somewhere you're meant to go last, yet I don't think it requires the switches to be pressed to progress.

...there was a midpoint in that castle? I just assumed that the space between the two coins at the start of the second room was a pit, and so I jumped over it all the time.

And I would very much recommend doing that edit to the zsnes.cfg file to reduce the slowdown, since some of the harder levels are pretty much unplayable without it.

I'm a little bit late but the combination of Rao's video and Argu's was pretty interesting.

Honestly if I was LPing this I would probably have been just as stumped as Rao! Little mechanics like that are so easy to forget when they're almost never used in hacks.

I routinely clean out my dropbox of everything that's not important. That reading and another audio file are usually the only things that make it through inspection every time.

One thing I don't understand is those classic bricks in the chain chomp level were just turn blocks but 'real' classic bricks will appear in a later level. (There's also a third variety even later). The hack lacks a bit of polish at times.
