Any suggestions for a first hack? I'd like to try something that's about average difficulty.

Springboard And Shells Hack

I'd say something a little more challenging than the original SMW, but with interesting level designs. I'm only average at at SMW, so about that range.

Of course you guys suggest really difficult stuff, and a Super Metroid hack :/.

It's sad that Hyper 6 is the easiest one listed so far... well, other than ascetic.

I'd say to just go on SMWCentral and pick a hack. None of the hacks there other than SMWCP and ASMT should go too far beyond original SMW difficulty, and generally the more exits, the easier (again, SMWCP and ASMT are exceptions).

Guess I'll start downloading a few on SMWC

I was aware that I used "should", though. Doesn't SMWC have rules that deter submission and acceptance of hacks that go into Kaizo-level difficulty (keeping in mind that Kaizo isn't actually that difficult compared to more recent Hell hacks)?

Which is why I also mentioned ASMT and SMWCP.

I mean, if you want him to play something as old as Super Demo World, then we can include that. >_>

I was saying that SDW is pretty difficult at points.

I was also saying that he shouldn't play a hack like SDW because it's been done so much.

One of the games raocow played early on that sounds like it might be what you're looking for is Super Challenge World. I have only watched a few of the videos for it, but even in the initial description it sounds like a good way to get into the SMW romhacks. If I'm completely wrong on that point correct me, but otherwise I'm considering that as a starting point myself.

If it weren't for needing to use rewind and savestates to make ASMT playable at this point in time I'd jump directly into that in order to experience it's sexiness firsthand. :<

I will second the The Second Reality Project hacks even if they've been done a bit. They don't go too overboard until the end of the game.
