I got a few days worth of episode backlog I just cleared, and oh man this game just showed itself it to have MUCH more depths than a simple sokoban-like. raocow's doing OK, is he getting good at puzzle games?

And there's picross. Easy to solve, but where to apply it?

i kid, i kid; plenty of useful info was gained in this one. also he's getting better at the earlier rooms through repetition and that's making me very >:) like yessss this is what's supposed to happen

I dunno if it's just me but the reveal that those grids with numbers are picross puzzles sits kind of poorly with me because it requires knowledge outside the game. Given the kind of game this is looking anything up is highly discouraged, so if you don't know what a picross puzzle looks like or how it works (like me on both counts) I guess you just will never finish the game? I dunno, that leaves a bit of a sour taste in my mouth.

Sure, but does anything in the game actually tell you it's picross? I for one assumed it was some kind of chart tallying the gems or something and would have never put together it was a specific type of grid puzzle. It's not really the kind of thing you would be able to solve intuitively without some kind of instructions imo, but maybe that's just me being bad at puzzles.

Nonograms are pretty well known and I would expect anyone familiar with Sokoban to have at least a cursory knowledge and be able to work it out, and if truly stumped searching "number grid puzzle" on Google immediately brings up nonograms and Picross. But also

the nonogram puzzles are not mandatory for completion, they're optional collectibles for 100%, and solving even one of them makes this very apparent.

And if you were actively playing it and truly lost -

no; for reasons i hope come up in the lp proper, picking up the infinity symbol from the locust counter doesn't work, so it can't be moved anywhere

oh, sure! it has some minor spoilers relative to the lp for the appearances of some void lords, and it's going to have the solution for the picross from the B007 shortcut, so i'll spoiler it below

this uses a mix of custom art and assets pulled from void stranger itself--in specific, i drew gray's portrait, the branching border beneath her, the bars behind the puzzle's numbers, and the void lords at the bottom. the layout and the idea of having the void lords walking in profile at the bottom was inspired by mario's picross on the gb

using a combination of some specific layering + fade-in frames and a puzzle solution animation, i made this convincingly look like an interactive game within aseprite. below is all the frames output to a single gif

i made this thing for my own void stranger lp, which i wasn't gonna make a thread for cause i didn't want to distract from rao's... buuuut i guess i will now
