Re: Slay the Princess: Pristine Cut - Sharpened Volcano Fragment

Post by Lord Ruby »

The malfunctioning princess last episode was fascinating, but yes, also very terrifying. I wonder if

asking explicit questions, like the one about whether she wants to destroy the world (a princess for rao!), will make her develop such desires. Probably. So ... we'll probably get there eventually, at least if that unlocks a vessel. I don't think we've seen a princess actually say she wants to end the world, would be interesting.

(blind speculation)

You get the Nightmare by

locking the Princess in the basement, which you weren't given the option to do this time because you'd already done it.

You get the Beast by

not taking the Pristine Blade when it is first offered, and subsequently letting the Princess kill you without also killing her back.

EDIT: To answer your question from the end of the video:

your guess is correct. You can also get to The Wild from this chapter, but you couldn't do that this time because you'd already been there.

Spoilers for a few days in the future:

raocow won't be able to not take the Pristine Blade on the fifth loop.

IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT FILLING THE GALLERY (this is a minor spoiler, but it's one you'll probably want to see):

Every gallery has at least one entry labeled "See through her eyes at the end of everything." Getting this entry requires finishing the game after taking that version of the Princess to Her, and some galleries have mutually-exclusive versions of this entry, so this might take a little bit longer than you're expecting.

we feel like the fact raocow voiced Mailbox in Object Mayhem is like, that show's lasting legacy. like, both in and outside of object show spaces, nobody really brings it up other than to be like "oh yeah, this is the one where raocow did a voice for a guy". imagine if Super Mario Bros. 2's only lasting legacy is the trivia that it used to be Doki Doki Panic, and you have Object Mayhem

this is really funny to me because i didn't remember it either and i never saw any mentions of it in any object show related shitpost i've crossed by in my time online. like i dont do object shows much because they're a bit too cutesy for me, but im surprised i haven't even seen another reference to mailbox since like 2017

raocow wrote:I'm not convinced yet if I want to do the whole gallery, like it will depend on how much 'work' that requires. But even if I don't, this chapter here is more than enough to convince me that there is still a lot of value in seeking out the endings for the chapter 2s.
I think filling the entire gallery probably isn't worth it; unless you're following a guide, there's likely to be a lot of cases where you see almost everything a chapter has to offer but have one or two blank entries left that are pretty obscure to get.

I'm thinking especially of things like the entry in

The Prisoner

(spoilered especially because this is a chapter we haven't seen in the series yet) that you get by

continually pestering the Narrator while you're still in the woods

.
raocow wrote:Theory: For Chapter III, for another Chapter III, you let her possess you, because I think this is where it's going, and then if you have the knife you kill yourself.
Minor spoilers, which includes either a confirmation or denial:

You are correct, but this Chapter III didn't exist until The Pristine Cut.

The Fury was one of the chapters that was massively expanded in The Pristine Cut; in the original release, it didn't really matter what you did, the Princess just exploded you after you said one thing to her and the chapter ended.

In case you're wondering why you weren't allowed to fight the Princess unarmed:

that's another way to get to The Fury, which you've already seen on this playthrough.

Your "wild theory" is

basically correct.

To elaborate a little:

The Stranger does not have a Chapter 3, and The Razor's Chapter 3 and Chapter 4 options aren't shared and barely differ from each other, but aside from that the Chapter 2 Princesses come in pairs. Each member of a pair has one shared and one unique Chapter 3.

This wasn't true before The Pristine Cut.

raocow wrote:but if that's correct, gosh I don't know if getting all memories is smart, time commitment wise, haha...
It's actually worse than this:

Not only is this a thing, but even on a fixed Chapter 1 --> Chapter 2 --> Chapter 3 path, the actions you take in Chapter 2 can influence what Voice joins you in Chapter 3, and what things can happen in Chapter 3 often depends on what Voice joins you.

For example,

when you did The Den, you were joined by the Voices of the Hunted and the Skeptic, and were presented with the option to either step into the shadows to face the Princess or bait her toward the stairs. You faced the Princess, and the chapter immediately ended; if you'd baited her, it would have gone on for a while longer. But it's possible to have the Voice of the Stubborn instead of the Skeptic with you, and that reverses this; baiting her ends the chapter immediately, while standing your ground and fighting gives you a longer chapter.

This is being so great, I'm fine with leaving a memory hunting for later, if only so we can return to this game and take it slow. While it's being fun, I can imagine it being a bit tiring for raocow to skim through the many possible options at this point.

The remaining chapters include a lot of my favorite stuff in the game; we'll be eating well over the next week.

If raocow decides to

get the ending where you merge with the Princess and undo everything the Narrator did

, it'll be pretty thematically appropriate for it to happen

after the chapter where the Narrator's dad catches him smoking and makes him smoke the whole pack in one go and the Narrator winds up regretting everything.
