When I played through this game in my own time, I tried Hell a bit. Then I realized it wasn't worth my time and stopped. Very flawed postgame setup in my eyes, not fun in the slightest.

My hot take is that I would consider the true villain of the lore to be not Ballos, the Doctor, Misery or whoever, but to be the king. Repaying kindness to his kingdom's subjects with cruelty turned the formerly benevolent Ballos into an out-of-control madman, and brought forth this entire disaster. The king paid for his selfishness with his own life.

There really should have been a Cave Story mod where you can confront some manifestation of the king and fight him... some may speculate that the Mimiga King is in fact his soul atoning for his actions.



I was going to suggest that now that we've listened to the original music tracks for the postgame level, perhaps we can switch back to remastered for the second session, but looks like it's already beaten.

Not that I know of? Although one solution that one game implemented is to have an upgrade you can toggle where the weapon would auto-shoot while you hold down to charge.

I didn't realize how much of the ASMT King Charles fight was a Cave Story reference.

Also didn't know the Emerald Stronghold music was from Cave Story either.

This was a blast to watch from start to finish, I can't wait to see how the challenges would unfold.

Trivia (Final, maybe)
-The last missile expansion varies quantity depending on what version of the weapon you have, for instance, Super Missile Launcher would give you 24 missiles, Regular would give you 32 missiles, and lastly, If you didn't collected the weapon anywhere in the game, you would get the regular missile launcher, and a stack of 100 missiles
-Depending on your time, the music in the title screen would change. Under 6 Minutes unlocks "Curly's Theme" (Running Hell), Under 5 Minutes unlocks the Toroko Theme, Under 4 minutes unlocks the King Theme (White), Under 3 Minutes unlocks "Sue's Theme" (Safety) which is the song that can be heard in arthur's house, In addition, this unlocks the entire jukebox
-If you Had the "Little Man" on you it would pop up in the last transition giving you the text "Aren't we forgetting something?"
-Ballos was made inspired in a character from Berserk
-The final words before Balrog drops to save you "It's the grudge of the victims who were caught up in it when Ballos went out of control in the past." according to Pixel in an interview
-Forgot to add this one but, also note how at the start of the game there's an unique enemy that never shows up in the game, yet, it's present in a few parts of the game to some extent, The door enemy that you kill to get to the mimiga village, this enemy never shows up again, but look how it has an eye, It's theorized it is Ballos taking a sight of the player very early on in the game, Also, the "eye" is present in some blocks of the game, kinda giving some clues about it, but this one is a big stretch, still, interesting nonetheless

wisecracks aside, you got further into Hell in the first session than I did my entire time with the game. I think I got to Heavy Press once before my brain crapped out in the altogether.

There doesn't seem to be a link to it individually any more, just links to the whole pack, but it will haven been "Welcome Home" from the Cave Story Remix Project. Some but not all of the songs have been individually reuploaded to YouTube, and Welcome Home has not been reuploaded.

I said this in the youtube comments somewhere (I think it was on the first Hell video) but Cave Story is not low rollover-friendly. My keyboard will not accept a Z or X input if I'm already holding both up and right (for some strange reason it's only those two together that block other keys) so I have to relearn Cave Story from the ground up with a gamepad and most joysticks are meant for 3d play so now instead of getting a lack of upward shooting while moving right I'm getting too many vertical inputs while walking left-to-right.

I just can't win.

Are you using a gamepad that doesn't have a D-pad?
I always play my platformers with a gamepad but very rarely with the analogue stick unless there's some kind of benefit to it, like 360-degree aiming or something.

it's an X360 controller so the d-pad will also send spurious vertical movement (it's actually worse with the D-pad than with the stick because with the stick there's some tolerance. with the d-pad if I'm not perfectly centered on the X-axis button I'll aim upwards). I suppose I should test my joycons since those have discrete d-pad buttons rather than these stupid mushy hat switches that don't work right half the time but I really don't want to mess with pairing the joycons to windows.

King using reduced-potency red flowers isn't something you would likely ever think of from playing the game, but it is hinted at enough once you know the idea that i would believe Pixel planned it as part of the game's lore. In particular, i don't see any better explanation for the reddish-tint in King's eyes, and we've seen signs of the flowers being cultivated in Mimiga Village in Arthur's basement (which is also never explained). My take was that Arthur was using the same method and probably taught King how to do it. Pixel may just not have felt there was a natural way to bring it up explicitly with in-game dialog, and having planned lore that is hinted at but never explained would be in character for the game.

Is the Snake available in any of them? If not, it's a shame that raocow would never see this weapon.

Only in Boss Attack Mode, the rest of the challenges have the weapons he already saw, so really, the only way for him to see the weapon is by attempting the boss mode and talk to the cthulhu servant at a certain point, or to replay the game up´until the labyrinth shop with the polar star and the fireball in hand, which takes a lot of time

edit: He could also as a last resort to show the weapon, use a save from the Cave Story forums that have that weapon

With Nemesis Challenge showing up, I can post the 3D version of it, this one doesn't differ much from the 2D challenge, aside from the moody colors and

being able to save at some point

this however only gives you the

Prinny Cap

which seems to be a reference to the

Prinny characters from the Disgaea series

, something I'm not familiar with so I can't tell more

That's pretty cool how they integrated it into the map, and it vaguely fits into the overworld I think? You kinda approach that area of the game climbing up the bottom right side of the island and then moving to the left so I don't know. It's close enough to the bottom of the island to be passable.

To his credit, the map does not show blocks that haven't appeared yet.
I, too, would be irritated by the pop-in blocks appearing at an inopportune moment after a leap of faith.

I beat Bloodstained Sanctuary several times as a kid, and can still beat it without much trouble, so I never thought that it was “that” difficult. Certainly a challenge, but I have played way harder platforming levels in my lifetime.

As we have seen with raocow’s successful run of it, the trick is to take things slow. This includes the second room. You can get through the falling blocks and enemies with little trouble by just walking forward, and stopping to kill enemies when they spawn.

Haven’t played the challenges, but those suddenly-appearing blocks seem kind of bullshit to me. Why can’t they just… idk… be there from the start? Their only function seems to be to add arbitrary trial and error.
