ASMBXT - Graphics

Post by Kashkabald »

Hi!

If you want to request or share graphical resources, this is the topic, I guess.

Anyway I'm making this mostly for two requests. First, anyone got a "storming castle" background? Been looking, can't find one, and I need it for my level. The other request is:

How do I make this tile properly?

For the record, I don't click on any spoiler boxes
not even my own
But I have a question - when you want a non-included background, how does it work? The in-game manual doesn't say (or I missed it somehow)

Just look at the included level (demodemo).

Basically if you have a folder with the level's name and a file named after one of the "default" files, the game first looks at the level folder for that file. "demodemo" has it's background overwrite the SMW "Clouds" background, for example.

The simplest would be to offset it then fix the seam. So basically, if you fix the middle of this to join nicely: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/561907/ForOthe ... offset.png then you should be good to go. Good luck! :P

Edit: Couldn't help but make an attempt myself: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/561907/ForOthe ... eaweed.png
I think it will be quite noticeable when actually in the game though, don't have the time to try it out right now but I can tinker some more with it later if you like where it's going.
fart.

The expanded graphic pack: http://rpgmaker.net/engines/smbx/utilities/2/

Great place to start for custom graphics.

This is pretty neat! It's only really noticeable if you know where the split occurs, and just by looking at the color of the sky. If you could just retouch that I'd <3 you forever.

Quick question, where should I place the Graphic Pack folder in order to actually use the graphics it has?

Create a folder where your .lvl file is with the same name.

Dropped a few quotes since it was pretty big.

I still see so many things that could be done but I'm starting to stare myself blind on it so I better not :p . Think it's reached "good enough"-state at least.

Anyone know how I could get a background and tileset similar to Hot Head Hop from Donkey Kong Country 2?

Found the background here: http://spriters-resource.com/snes/dkc2/sheet/45307

No luck with a tileset though.

Not sure if this is the right topic in which to bring this up, but the bullet bills included in the devkit are a couple pixels too low when they're facing right. Super minor, but worth fixing.

We should probably get a checklist going of graphics that need to be added to the core game. So far I can think of:

Need to be done
Horses don't have a hatching animation yet (they hatch as Yoshis then get replaced by horses)
Demo doesn't have Racoon, Tanooki or Hammer Bros sprites
Replace Luigi with Iris

Should be done
Think of replacements for Toad & Peach
Think of a replacement for Link (although Link is fairly humourously out of place in a Mario game anyway so he could be just as humourously out of place in ASMBXT)
Maybe replace the other enemies that the dev kit didn't alter already

Ice Flower = Carrot?
Tanuki Leaf = Pumpkin?
Hammer Bros. Suit = Walnut?
Thwomp = Leg of Ham?
Dry Bones = ... some other skeleton/undead?
Big boos already had a resprite from ASMT, didn't they?
Same with dragon coins, unless we want something different.
Parana Plants and Spike Top , no clue.
I think the boots fit in their own quirky way.
I would help, but I'm cursed with inability to make things look good.

Personally I'm not a huge fan of the pinkish/purple-ish colors the saw things (which are now fiery... things) use.

I made a very simple recolor of the colors I'm not a huge fan of if anyone's interested.

I dunno. If nobody else agrees with me then just ignore this I guess. Or something.

Thanks!

While working on my level today and testing it out, I noticed something that looks like it shouldn't be on Demo's climbing sprite.

Image

It's those few little black pixels. It seemed to only be on that frame.
I don't know if anyone else had seen it and pointed it out, but as far as I saw no one has said anything.
He captured!

An on a million other frames, too.
No signature ideas right now.
