ASMBXT - Sounds & Music
Hi!
One of the good things about SMBX is that we have full power to change every single sound and use whatever music you want.. This comes in handy when what you are making is not really a Mario game!
I've been tinkering with making it sound different, and also making the intro a bit more project related. No way intended to be final, just making it look a bit better. Added an intro song, too.
Also added a few new sounds from the sources I had lying around.

If you need recommendations for music/sounds to use, or are thinking of composing your own music or making your own sounds, this is the topic! Just let us know.

Re: ASMBXT - Sounds & Music
Remember that SMBX is less than graceful about looping music, so if you have a short clip that you want to loop, it's best to do that on your end first for about how long the level should last before loading it into your level.

Re: ASMBXT - Sounds & Music
I love the intro music, very fitting for this project.
Though, I think we can use a better intro level and background for the menu screen, along with altering both the coin sound and the music where you're entering the levels (the SMB3 sound).
All I can say is that those two sounds so far are displeasing to my ears...

I didn't change the coin sound, I did alter the other sound though. I'll see what I can do.m4sterbr0s wrote:I love the intro music, very fitting for this project.

Re: ASMBXT - Sounds & Music
I want to use The Capital City of Flower In The Sky from Perfect Cherry Blossom, but I don't want to put a hueg file into the whole mess just for the sake of one level.
With that said, I'd also like to use Lullaby of Deserted Hell from Subterranean Animism, but I have the same hesitancy as with the PCB song (though considerably less, seeing as how Lullaby isn't a seven-minute mp3).
The questions I have, is would anybody else like to use these songs and do multiple stages using the same song only need one copy of the song?

Hm. Been thinking. Should we wait for somebody to request a song or can we just start making random themed songs and hope for the best? Of course, I'm leaning towards the former myself, but I'm unsure.

Re: ASMBXT - Sounds & Music
Well I just took a track I liked from the game Tombi 2 (or Tomba 2 if you live in an NTSC region) and used that. I did lower the bitrate to 120-150 kbps VBR to avoid a large file size though and it was only 1.5 minutes long (luckily the level is fast-paced enough for it to not repeat). I think if tracks aren't going to be shared then lowering the bitrate would be the way to go. In fact, having just looked, the default tracks in the SMBX editor are 64 kbps. I wouldn't necessarily suggest going that low but reducing it a bit to keep down the file size would be considerate.

Yeah just going to straight out say that I'll be standing by in case anybody wants original music in their level. Give me a holler and I'll see what I can do.Bwarch wrote:Hm. Been thinking. Re: ASMBXT - Sounds & Music
So, if I intend to use music that is not sure to be acceptable, I should just send a link beforehand, right? Or do we sporadically announce everything to avoid something going horribly wrong?
By the way: What about remixes? those should be alright, shouldn't they?

Assuming I end up doing anything for this project in the first place, I could very well use that song. I love that song.raekuul wrote:With that said, I'd also like to use Lullaby of Deserted Hell from Subterranean Animism, but I have the same hesitancy as with the PCB song (though considerably less, seeing as how Lullaby isn't a seven-minute mp3).

My question here is though, has there been a hard decision made as far as how many different songs people use and end up filling the game with? So far it just looks like the story is "sure, everybody use a song if you want, just don't encode it in 320kbps because that's dumb" but I could be wrong.
I regularly stream on Twitch! with other members of the talkhaus. Come watch Monday, Tuesday and Friday at 2PM for blind playthroughs and Pokémon and Touhou and stuff. Come hang out with us!

Re: ASMBXT - Sounds & Music
If anybody wants to use the same music that I'm using, I have some low-size files in my dropbox ready for use.
Capital City of Flowers in the Sky (Touhou 07 Stage 4)
Lullaby of Deserted Hell (Touhou 11 Stage 5)

Right, I'm gonna work on the sounds/general music cues some more, since I seem to be the only one genuinely interested in those parts. Any suggestions?

What I've been using as the level clear music. Works nicely enough but it needs the sound effect, the "zwee".

How about this? http://www49.zippyshare.com/v/66162630/file.htmlraocow wrote:I still think it should remix in some way the levan polka, since stars are leeks.
Note: it appears to cutoff at the end in the file preview. The actual file doesn't.
I made it using a Super Mario World soundfont so it sounds appropriately SNES-like. I remembered hearing something about sounds needing to have the same properties as the sounds they're replacing so it's the same encoding (128 kbps MP3) and the exact same length. It's also the same volume.

That's genius. Should be the default for every levelDoctor Shemp wrote:How about this? http://www49.zippyshare.com/v/66162630/file.htmlraocow wrote:I still think it should remix in some way the levan polka, since stars are leeks.

*listens to it over and over* Very catchy and not annoying! I second this as the official replacement.Doctor Shemp wrote:How about this? http://www49.zippyshare.com/v/66162630/file.html

It's alright, but I feel like it should sound a bit more... victorious. I'd take a crack at it if I had any musical talent whatsoever, but I don't. :VDoctor Shemp wrote:How about this? http://www49.zippyshare.com/v/66162630/file.htmlraocow wrote:I still think it should remix in some way the levan polka, since stars are leeks.

Re: ASMBXT - Sounds & Music
I assume you're thinking that because it's in a minor key. I tried a version where it modulates to the parallel major at the end but it does not sound good. Putting the whole thing in major doesn't sound good either, especially if you recognise the original because it jars with you.MrWeirdGuy wrote:It's alright, but I feel like it should sound a bit more... victorious. Anyway, here's a Player Dies one I made using the same tune. I'm not as sure about this one though.

Not sure what it is, but the victory theme just sounds weird to me. Death sounds fine though.

With the 'star get' sound: I tried to put the end into major and it actually sounds somewhat more pleasing (although I made the sample for those who can't imagine, but with the lamest of all sounds, but it's not a proposal or anything, so don't judge the sound, just the music):
