The Talkhaus "Make A Good Level" Contest -- Discussion

Postby limepie20 » 7 years ago

This thread is for questions or discussion on the contest, its levels, etc.
Submissions go in the other thread.
------
So we're having a contest. That's cool, right?

Basically, as the title states, the point of this contest is just to make a good level (i.e. a fun level). There's nothing more to it; you're free to make whatever your heart desires and utilize any tool that could optimize your level. So, let's get into the meat and potatoes of the contest.

Rules
There really isn't a lot to say here. Your tools and resources are not limited at all. The rather few rules you must follow are:
  • No ROMs; submit an IPS
  • Your level has to be beatable
  • You are only making one level
  • A two-person partnership is applicable
That's not too bad, right?

Judging
Here is the rubric for judging:
Level Design:
  • Fun: 20
  • Difficulty: 5
  • Focus: 5
Atmosphere:
  • Visuals: 5
  • Music: 5
Functionality:
  • Functionality: 10
You're final score will be out of 50.

Some Clarification/Guidelines:
Fun: This is where most of your score will be so make sure your level is fun. That's really what's important here. Remember to watch your level's length because if you drag it out, you'll lose points.
Difficulty: Make sure your level has consistent difficulty throughout or a gradual difficulty curve. It doesn't necessarily have to be challenging, but avoid making it too easy or too hard.
Focus: Your level has one theme, okay? Don't randomly switch or cycle through themes.

Things like overworld, title screen, or other elements of smw that aren't part of your level won't really affect your score.
Who are the judges? As of now, me and Argumentable.

Other Info
You have around a month to make your level. The deadline will be Monday, April 30th when I wake up AM. Now, the first place winner will receive a nice new color of their choice for their name. If you have any personal questions, feel free to PM me or Argumentable. Thank you!

Heck yeah a level design contest in the Talkhaus!! I'll probably make a thing unless real life gets in the way. What does the "no rom" rule mean though? You just submit the .mwl files?

No, submit an IPS with your level and have it be accessible through overworld.

Should we be doing this while A2MT is still in progress? I mean shouldn't levels for that collab be top priority for most of the forum users who are into SMW hacking?

The a2mt level slots are filled right now, so someone who wanted to would have to wait on the reserve list. And maybe they don't want to comply to the rules or burdens and just make a level for this. The deadline isn't for a over a month anyway.

If I can figure out how to work Lunar Magic in a short enough time span I'll try and enter.

It is the BEST idea for my first hack to be for a contest, yes, yes it is.
(No it isn't)

At the very least I'll do an LP of the contest, unless raocow does, then I'm not sure whether I'll still want to, haha.

Cobalt, in your case you may want to take the full amount of time

I had an Idea for a level but I'm not sure I can execute it on time.
"If you want to be taken seriously in the great modern world of ours, you'll need to learn how to face facts, by charging at them with a hammer or a screwdriver, freaking plunging it in the wall, and people will ask you, "what the hell are you doing?", you don't even answer them, you just keep on plugging at the wall, once you get rid of your house in that fashion you'll probably be commited, and you'll be set for life!"

Okay, well then, this will be an experiment for me. Never worked on a hack before (or on a single level for a hack). Nevertheless I always wanted to learn making custom Mario levels. Thus I encourage myself learning basics for Mario hacking by submitting one level for your hack.
I really hope that a pure vanilla level is okay since I cannot offer more at the moment. :)

Err yeah, I meant that: I learn hacking by giving myself a time limit and working towards a certain deadline. :P

I'm already used up most of my stream on 3 levels going on 4. Still I might pop something out.

You would probably get 6 and a half times the participation if you announced that you we LPing them, though at the cost of reducing the total number of quality levels by a factor of 3 and a half.

DJ: collab hack != contest
The collab hack A2MT is still active. This contest has nothing to do with it. It's just "a contest" on talkhaus. Edit: too late.
And I'm gonna participate. I must participate to every SMW contest I see because I freaking love contests!!!!!!!! :!:

Never made a level before but this is tempting.

I'll probably need reminded of this in about two weeks after I've moved cross country. :)

I will likely try to participate. I don't have much free time at the moment, but I feel like getting in on this (and stealing the show, dohoho~).

Definitely entering, although I suppose mine will be mostly vanilla since I don't understand all this crazy stuff aside from YY-CHR. I guess I have a full month to learn, but I doubt I'll get very far on that if I haven't done so already. Ah well.
