Re: The (Talkhaus) Price is Right - Discussion Thread
Since we've twice seen nothing but two-digit bids, as well as a couple of *five* digit bids, I think it'd be a good idea for me to explain a little about the one-bid segments, and a few little strategies/pointers.
First off, the prizes are always less than what would be offered from a pricing game, but they're not so "cheap" as to be only $100 or less. In general, assume each one is somewhere in the mid/upper three digit, to the lower four digit range (usually such prizes aren't worth more than $2,000-$3,000 at most; the first prize offered in episode 1 was special, because that was the first episode, and I wanted to start off with a bang). This is pretty standard TPiR fare, really; sometimes you'll be surprised at how much (or little, in some cases) a prize is actually *worth*. That said, I'm actually not very good at describing prizes, hence why Ayjo always fumbles with the descriptions, so I understand that I usually make the prize offered sound a lot less valuable than it technically *is*.
Keep in mind that if you bid *below* someone, you're banking on the price of that prize being in-between what you bid, and what the other person bid. If Contestant #1 bids $800, and you bid $600, you're basically hoping the price is more than $600, but less than $800. For this reason, you should *never* bid only a small amount *below* someone else. I've actually seen people bid $1 less than someone on the actual show. This basically *guarantees* you won't win, unless the price you guessed happens to be the *exact* price of the prize (which, again, *has* happened before).
So, with that, a couple classic tips often used on the show itself to help improve your odds of winning that round, especially if you're the last one to bid. These may still work if you aren't, but you run the risk, then, of someone using the same tactic against you. If you believe everyone else underbid, you can bid as little as $1 *more* than them. It's a bit of a cheap shot, and generally *really* ticks off the person you "$1 over'd" (as you've basically guaranteed now that *they* can't win unless they guessed exactly right), but it is often quite effective. If, however, you believe everyone *overbid*, you can go with the tried-and-true $1 bid. zmonbobbo attempted it in Episode 1, and though it didn't succeed, if anyone was wondering why he did that... well, that's why. If everyone else has overbid, it doesn't matter how much or little you are below the actual retail price of the prize, just that you *are*. Again, you can try these strategies at any time if you so wish, but don't be surprised if you're bidding third, bid $601 to someone's $600, and then the last person bids $602.
That should hopefully keep the two- and five-digit bids away.

For that prize, i was expecting a 6 inch tall statue, not a 6 foot tall one according to the price. bkamakaze was close to accurate with his pic.

Yeah, Three Strikes is by far the longest game on TPiR. Because it's so involved, even on the show, it can take a good 15 minutes sometimes, hence why it's very rarely played (and why subsequently *I'll* be playing it only very rarely after this time). Fortunately, it's getting close-ish to being finished.Picochilla wrote:It's now nothing aganist the Three Stikes game or so, but i find the Game gets a little bit into the lenght....

So in the end after like 2 weeks of working on it. This game ends up in a "win or don't win"50/50 situation.

I spent most of the last two days in bed, and I'm still not 100%, but finally feeling good enough to do this again.
Three Strikes will be ending soon! Hooray!
Now I see why Drew Carey dislikes this game. Holy crap I forgot how *long* it can be, even if Wolfolotl's played it quite well. ;P

Well. As pholtos said:jayScribble wrote:Since episode 2 is about to end, is there enough people for the next one?
This one is just taking longer than usual because Three Strikes is a very long game, plus bouts of random depression and a cold delayed things. I'm fine now, so this should be moving along quicker.pholtos wrote:psst it's only half way over.
That said, though, I don't believe we have enough reserves for Episode 3 at the *moment*, but we'll wait until Episode 2 is finished before worrying about whether we have enough players. I imagine more people will sign up once this one ends. Also, those who played in Episode 1 will be eligible again for Episode 3, so there's that.

Heh. It's in the Bag didn't go so well... Jesuiscontent missed a couple clues I hid in it, unfortunately. Other than the very obvious candy bar, there are at least two products whose prices that should've been easier to guess... can anyone figure them out?

Well. They *were* rather subtle. The lotion was actually used in Episode 1 (Grand Game), and had the same price. Also, the Cat Planet Machine Oil's price was a reference to raocow's LP, in which he said that 1599 was "the price of a regular cat planet".
I guess it's not too surprising you missed them, but I kinda hoped someone would catch them. Oh well.

Well. It's kinda overplayed, and I feel like it basically amounts to blind luck. It didn't help that, given the random order of how I watch episodes (just whatever's up on YouTube), the first dozen or so times I saw it played, it was lost. Also, Drew doesn't make the contestant scream "THAT'S TOO MUCH!!!" like Bob did. So boo there.Zyglrox Odyssey wrote:Yelsey how the heck do you not like THAT'S TOO MUCH! you butt

And I love Cliff Hangers, I'll have you know. (Too bad designing that board would be well beyond my skills, so unless someone else can do it, that one won't appear on Talkhaus TPiR.)
