Well this is an interesting issue. After switching to the html5 player raocow's last two Valdis Story videos are only available in 360p resolution but if I switch to the flash player they're available in 480p.
Edit: Also the html5 video is notably lighter than the flash version. Html5 and Flash. It's not just a resolution difference either. The Flash version isn't lighter at 360p.

Re: Grumped about YouTube
The only resolutions currently available for HTML5 is 360p and 720p. For me this is currently a deal breaker, since 360p is sub-par to what I'm used to (not helped that there is no more small video player), and 720p drains my bandwidth fast (not helped that my internet is shared with 6 other people (and I've watched 720p videos for half a month before broadband speed slowed to a crawl for the last week of the month.)).Alice wrote:Well this is an interesting issue. The highest video resolution raocow uploads is 480p (correct me if I'm wrong).

Re: Grumped about YouTube
With the exception of the newer Copy Kitty lp that is correct. And that's an annoying choice for Google to have made. I guess I will just stick to Flash for now unless raocow finally makes the jump to uploading 720p which seems very unlikely. 480p is watchable for most of his videos but anything below that is just atrocious.jayScribble wrote:The highest video resolution raocow uploads is 480p (correct me if I'm wrong).

Re: Grumped about YouTube
HTML5 is the best
Now I can finally watch YouTube videos without worrying about Flash crashing three times in the same fucking day (note: this only started happening a few years back, i don't know what the hell adobe did but)
Also the speed option is kinda neat

Re: Grumped about YouTube
Actually, that's not the case. The HTML5 player can play in any resolution, the issue is that if your browser doesn't support Media Source Extensions (or it's disabled), then DASH playback will not work, and without DASH, you can only watch in 360p or 720p.jayScribble wrote:The only resolutions currently available for HTML5 is 360p and 720p.Alice wrote:Well this is an interesting issue. If you're on firefox, try setting "media.mediasource.enabled" to true in about:"config. That should allow 480p and 1080p youtube videos.
Re: Grumped about YouTube
Unfortunately this doesn't work for me. I still only get 360p for raocow's videos.SAJewers wrote:If you're on firefox, try setting "media.mediasource.enabled" to true in about:"config. That should allow 480p and 1080p youtube videos.

Yeah, that may only be in the Beta/Nightly versions of Firefox.

Re: Grumped about YouTube

Interestingly I do get this same result after activating it but all videos still says "DASH: no" so it must be a nightly thing or something, though that article is five months old so who knows right now.

I tried that setting too, but so far it seems to only work at random times for me.
e: or it could be a nightly thing now that I think about it, but that seems like a weird thing to do

Re: Grumped about YouTube
After I started watching videos on html5 format, the firefox has been acting weird.
It makes sites look like this sometimes. The page will also switch rapidly between the normal and the text version.
It also made my computer go to blue screen once and restart. I'll have to see if reinstalling some of the add-ons helps with this.

Re: Grumped about YouTube
The Android Youtube app is garbage. It seems to be limited to a maximum of 360p resolution no matter what. I wouldn't complain if it was 480p since 480p is tolerable quality plus anything higher would be wasteful on my screen but Google sure seems to be a big fan of taking away user choice. It doesn't really help that apparently web browser apps including Firefox are forced to open Youtube videos in the Youtube app rather than being able to play them in-browser.
It looks like it might be a graphics driver issue. You should try updating those and see if that does anything. And if that doesn't help then try disabling graphics acceleration in your settings.Willhart wrote:After I started watching videos on html5 format, the firefox has been acting weird.

My phone usually asks me if I want to continue using the browser app or use the Youtube app. I usually pick the browser app so that I have more options.

As somebody who frequenly uses Youtube on Chrome, it seems every out of chrome experience not only about Youtube, but even Google itself has been slower. For someone like myself who is considering switching, this is worrysome...

That's weird. I don't remember it ever asking if I wanted to use the app or not. Do you know how to manually change that?ano0maly wrote:My phone usually asks me if I want to continue using the browser app or use the Youtube app. I usually pick the browser app so that I have more options.
Re: Grumped about YouTube
Go to Settings -> Applications Manager and find your browser and Youtube apps. See if there's anything in "Launch by default". If clearing defaults doesn't work, you could try clearing the data.Alice wrote:That's weird. I don't remember it ever asking if I wanted to use the app or not. Re: Grumped about YouTube
Doesn't seem to have worked. Oh well though, it's not that big a deal since I won't normally be watching Youtube videos on my phone. (Though in instances such as the one where my power was out I could probably use my tablet to watch videos using my phone for internet anyways.)

Re: Grumped about YouTube
My grump right now with the Android version is it just simply won't autoplay videos in a playlist anymore. You can have the autoplay button activated but it won't do anything. Once the video ends, everything stops and you have to manually select the next video yourself.
You'd think the YouTube app on Google's own operating system would work properly but nooooo. The iOS app works fine, although I don't know why you can't select your quality when using mobile data. You know when I get bored and have no wifi around I want to save as much data as possible. Hell I'd happily watch videos in 144p especially if its a video with commentary I really like (raocow for example).

Re: Grumped about YouTube
My life has been infinitely better since using the HTML5 player, just sayin'.
https://www.youtube.com/html5
Disabling dash playback via third party plugin always seemed to give me problems or would stop working, but here videos load fully and there's no problem since it's a Youtube thing they're doing themselves. (I assume?)

Re: Grumped about YouTube
So it looks like YouTube is rolling out a built-in gif creator in videos.
It seems to be on this guy's videos already. Under the share menu there's a gif tab, so that's neat I guess.
