Stupid epiphanies/revelations
Stupid epiphanies/revelations
Post a stupid realization you had only after you became a full-grown adult that you probably should have figured out by middle or high school. I'll start with one I had literally mere seconds ago.
"Alphabet" is a portmanteau of alpha and beta, the a and b of the Latin Greek alphabet from which most European languages are derived.

Greek alphabet, you mean.
But yeah, it's kinda like if we called our numberals 'onetwos' or something, which is pretty damn funny when you think about it.

Re: Stupid epiphanies/revelations
I realised that "DS" stands for "Dual Screen" many years later than I'm proud of.
Re: Stupid epiphanies/revelations
I've had far too many of these to remember on a moment's notice. One recent gem in particular came from the Megaman Battle Network series. It's a series about computers and computer programs, and a couple of the battle chips you get are called Dropdown and Popup. They both keep you out of harm's way whenever you're not attacking.
...It took me years of playing these games to realize that those were both terms for things on computers.
In a game about computers.

"Onetwos" sounds like what the British would call numbers.Telamon wrote:Greek alphabet, you mean.

Report in from a Britlander here: sadly, onetwos is not what we call numbers. We prefer 'pain in the arse'.Truhan wrote:"Onetwos" sounds like what the British would call numbers.Telamon wrote:Greek alphabet, you mean.

Freddy Prinze Jr played Fred in the Scooby Doo movies.
It never occurred to me until recently that he kinda just went by his real name.

it was actually a codename short for "Developer System" but the codename got out, somebody noticed that it could be short for 'dual screen,' and the name got around so quickly that nintendo felt like they had to use that name instead of whatever they'd been planning to call it at releaseHoeloe wrote:I realised that "DS" stands for "Dual Screen" many years later than I'm proud of.

It took years to realize that DKC2's subtitle, Diddy's Kong Quest, sounds like conquest.

For me I didn't even realize it wasn't 'Diddy Kong's Quest.'Sasquatch wrote:It took years to realize that DKC2's subtitle, Diddy's Kong Quest, sounds like conquest.

It took me a long time to realize that "Between the Lions" is a pun on "between the lines".

Re: Stupid epiphanies/revelations
I was poking at my fan settings in my car this morning on the way to work, and I was thinking about how the buttons are pretty cool since they're basically physically engineered radio buttons like you'd see in software.
Then I realized there was a radio in front of my and finally understood the term, "radio buttons"
It's referring to the preset station buttons on radios that were designed so only one could be pressed at a time. It never made sense to me until now.

Oh boy... For some reason I'm always either really fast or really slow at these things, never just normal.
It took me way too long to realise that undertale was a tale about being underground...
Lots more examples I can't remember right now though.
A more serious one: adulthood is just about acting like you know what you're doing

The protrusion on the GameCube was actually a handle this entire time. I'm at a loss for words why I didn't question that until recently.

Killer of Giants, by Ozzy, is about atomic bombs
It doesn't seem obvious from the title, but the lyrics really should make it obvious...
Took me until we did the cold war in socials class for it to click

Re: Stupid epiphanies/revelations
So, I started watching Sailor Moon recently. Great show, by the way! I don't even mind that a lot of it is filler; this is the first time I consistently like the filler episodes in a series.
Anyway, I'm 19 episodes in, and I only realized today that Tsukino Usagi (a.k.a. Sailor Moon) is named after... the moon. I feel like such a nincompoop. I wasn't even watching the show when I realized this, it was something I randomly noticed while I was on break at work today.
