Watchmen ending doesn't make that much sense

Postby Truhan » 4 years ago

Oh, hello. I didn't see you there because this is the internet and I can't actually see you. I watched Watchmen (heh) last night for maybe the sixth time or some shit. And you know what? That ending? Kinda doesn't make sense. Let's go over it point-by-point, shall we?

Alright, so Adrien...uh...Neville brings about world peace by basically framing Dr. Manhattan for killing literally everyone. It's made very clear that America and Russia both have their fingers itching on the "NUKE FUCKING EVERYTHING" buttons. America holds back because they discover Dr. Manhattan is behind the attacks...but why wouldn't Russia press their button? It's made clear that Russia is skeptical that Dr. Manhattan has actually disappeared, though they test America's limits by pushing into Afghanistan. Wouldn't Russia be even MORE inclined to press the button, knowing they'd just been attacked by Dr. Manhattan? I know a bunch of attacks happened simultaneously, but they probably wouldn't instantly know America had been attacked too, and even if they did, there's a good chance they would assume it to be a hoax or false flag and press the button anyways.

Well, whatever world peace happened. Except it didn't. Adrien Neville just creates a new arms race. Instead of racing in arms against each other, Russia and America are instead going to race in arms against Dr. Manhattan, who is a literal god because quantum physics. But wouldn't this actually strain international relations? Wouldn't the international community blame and resent America for not keeping their dog-god (lol) on his leash? Why would ANY nation be willing to work with America so quickly after they "caused" worldwide disaster?

Moreover, how long is this "peace" supposed to last? The entire world teams together to fight Dr. Manhattan, but he's just a boogeyman who literally goes to another galaxy because I don't want to live on this planet anymore. Wouldn't the international community get suspicious after, say, 20 years of no attacks by Dr. Manhattan? Hell, how is this peace supposed to last for more than one generation? You could argue that Adrien Neville continues to regularly frame Dr. Manhattan for attacks, but eventually he'll die of old age and being a nerdgin. When people are born well after Dr. Manhattan left (i.e. my generation), they would have a completely different perspective on the whole thing and maybe even question his continued existence. This would cause even more strain between nations down the road, but now, everyone would have bigger, badder weapons at the ready. Yeah, finding a way to bring peace by continuing an arms race sure is a brilliant idea.

Also, I find it really weird that they cut the scene where Nixon's aide convinces Jar Jar to propose to the Senate that they make Nixon the Supreme Chancellor. That was a pretty big deal, considering it explains how Nixon stays in power for literally the rest of eternity. It's not even in the Ultimate Cut. A strange decision, if you ask me.

In summation, I have no friends. It should be obvious why, after reading this post.

Yes, I've heard of the manga's ending. It makes even less sense because Canadian superhero Georges St.-Pierre could be called in to lay on top of them for 25 minutes.

I don't think so and that's because of the reasons Truhan stated: Dr. Manhattan was on America's side. Everyone would blame them for the attacks.
By making it an

alien that only attacks one city in the USA

the world leaders have much more reason to work together.
You're awesome.

This may seem weird, but what I disliked most about the movie was that they dared to use "Sound of Silence" in a serious context. That song BELONGS to The Graduate, man!

Now, if you're going to use if for humor, that's another thing, see the last season of Arrested Development.
