Which shift key do you use
I'm using a friend's computer while mine is in for repairs (rip graphics card), and the right shift key is really small to make room for the arrow keys on this keyboard. I pretty much never use the left shift key, so I keep hitting the freaking arrow key. Which got me thinking - am I in the minority here?
tl;dr hey look there's a poll
p.s. i pretty much type in all lowercase on the internet so this problem doesn't usually even happen but i'm talking about formal, like "this actually has to have capital letters" typing here. don't count gaming controls in this either, since that's completely different than what i'm thinking of here.

Re: Which shift key do you use
I use both shift keys almost equally. It really depends on what letter I'm capitalizing. For the most part whatever hand I'm using to hit the letter key is the same hand I use for the shift key so things on the left side of the keyboard get the left shift and things on the right side of it get the left shift key. If we're including using the shift key for shortcuts though I almost exclusively use the left shift for that.
Re: Which shift key do you use
LOL I USE CAPS LOCK
Or I did, until some point last year, when I decided to "correct" my typing habits and use the Shift Key. I almost always use the right Shift Key, usually with my pinky finger. I'm right handed, but that doesn't necessarily determine which key you use, I guess.

Both. Much depends on how I use the [SHIFT] Key.

Isn't left shift supposed to be good for right-handed people and right shift for left-handed? I only use left shift anyway

I'm left-handed and I mainly use the left shift key. I've never had "formal" keyboard training, though.Jesuiscontent wrote:Isn't left shift supposed to be good for right-handed people and right shift for left-handed? I only use left shift anyway
I also use the mouse with the right hand, so maybe I'm just computer-right-handed.
You're awesome.

I need to use the right shift key for stuff like ë or any key on the right half of the main section.

wait there is a right shift key...?
I really didn't even know that, so I always used the left one.

Re: Which shift key do you use
I used to double-tap Caps Lock (I know...) so I took it off and now I use the left shift key underneath the GAPING PIT IN MY SOUL keyboard
I'm still not used to it though really

Re: Which shift key do you use
...Huh, I guess I usually use the left shift key. I never really thought about it until now and in fact I actually thought it changed depending on the letter I'm capitalizing, like Alice said, but... nope, it's always left Shift. Go figure.

Re: Which shift key do you use
I use the right shift key more than I do the left one. It just feels a lot more natural for my hand (or pinkie really) to land on as opposed to the left shift when I type. But of course, when it comes to gaming, the left is used more frequently.
Re: Which shift key do you use
Usually the left shift key, but I can also go with the right one if need be. It's clear the left one has more wear and tear, though.

Re: Which shift key do you use
I like to think that I use both equally, though usually I end up using the left more often. The right shift is sometimes useful, but I just can't think of which times I actually use it.

I'm right-handed and I use the right shift key, although I don't think I really thought about it before today.
I do use the left shift key for control configurations in some games, since it's closely located to the often-used ZX keys and others near them.

I use the right shift key more because I'm right handed and it feels most comfortable.
stuff goes here
Re: Which shift key do you use
yeah, right Shift key mostly for me, I guess. Whether it's because I'm hitting something on the left side of they keyboard or not. To be fair, my typing technique is godawful, so...

Re: Which shift key do you use
Huh? that's interesting. I'm predominantly right-handed too, but I always use my left shift.
Who knows, though. It's likely I'm predominantly ambidextrous instead.

Re: Which shift key do you use
Yeah okay, never thought about this before, so I did a typing test.
-I use the left shift key when capitalizing letters on the right side of the keyboard (from T,G,V across) and vice versa
-I use the left shift key to shift-click things (due to using my right hand on the trackpad thing)
Interesting

Re: Which shift key do you use
(sorry about formatting)
do habits change on dvorak/not qwerty keyboards? how about other languages?
things were laid out primarily, well, uh, to stop typewriters from jamming by forcing alteration. but the distribution of glyphs means some more frequently used glyphs are on the right and left and vice versa. a, s, t, r, e, c, w, and d are all left of the gh split, which not only covers some frequent sounds (e, t, s, r, a), but also critically includes the start of some function words that disproportionately start sentences (who, what, when, where, why, do, can, etc)
most languages use a qwerty like layout, but russian, turkish (from turkey moreso), and arabic speakers are gonna be some of the more divergeant layout users. I suspect Arabs also use left more because the vocalized stuff is on the left shift area, I don't really know what Russian would be like because I don't speak it and when I use it it's always with a qwerty-based ya-v-e-r-t-y phonetic layout. Turkish is rarely than russian for me, mostly I just use it musically, and get away with german layouts and combing comma, so i don't know what it's like.
when i use german, well, noun phrases almost always start german sentences and so e and d (eine, a, and die/der/das, the) begin most thing. But all nouns are capitalized and questions happen without do support so virtually any verb can naturally begin a sentence so i don't know with it. Wie was warum wo usw begin german wh-phrases giving that same advantage.
Spanish and some other romance languages use q and c for their wh- words (and spanish has some nearby support with like donde) so they pattern the same. except i forget where french put its q; it uses azerty layouts. if it's on the right (prolly not, since azerty puts two other left siders in the upper row) then it might break the pattern.
chinese i always do from my phone (which im stuck on right now, sorry for my typing), but that's almost all writing hanzi directly. I don't use dvorak at all.
after that i'm usually on my side or something, so I use what's closer to the letter I'm capitalizing. I'm not ambidexterous but I've played piano for years and years so it feels really natural to alternate thumb-ring finger or whatever to reach the letter and shift nearby.

Re: Which shift key do you use
I use the right shift when capitalizing something typed on my left hand, and viceversa, because it's more comfortable to alternate hands when typing. Also, I never use capslock. That said, there may be a slight bias to one or the other shift keys, because of letter frequencies and whatnot.
More interestingly, which finger do you use the most when hitting the spacebar?

Re: Which shift key do you use
Almost exclusively left shift. I pretty much only use right shift for question marks, so I can basically push both buttons at the same time.
(Side note: it seems my phone only has a left shift, so... I guess that's an answer)
