Oh hey, let's tabletop!

Post by Hoeloe »

So, this was in discussion in the Let's Cortex thread. A few people there were interested in setting up a tabletop game (via Skype), which I'm prepared to GM.

I'm unavailable until the 16th, and even then can probably only run sessions on Saturdays (though that can be discussed), but I thought it worth getting a thread together to sort out some interested parties and begin discussing settings and such.

The plan is to use a system called "Fate" (http://www.faterpg.com/), which is quite similar in many ways to Cortex (the system being used for Let's Cortex), and is designed for 3-5 players. The site there has a rulebook as a downloadable .pdf, which may be worth checking out.

In short, each character has 5 aspects, a set of skills and a number of Fate points. Characters gain Fate points when an aspect negatively affects them, and can spend them to use an aspect to affect the game. Skills are used when rolling to add modifiers to dice rolls.

As far as setting has gone, I was thinking of using a setting similar to that in Let's Cortex, set in the Mario/ASMT universe, but with a different set of characters with different goals. Aside from that, I haven't worked out anything, and would appreciate input.

In terms of character generation, feel free to discuss characters here. The rulebook suggests you collaborate on character backstory to create aspects for your characters, and that's totally cool, but I'm also fine with (and somewhat encourage) people coming up with a backstory privately, so that it can come out in play. If people aren't sure what aspects to use, I'm fine with people leaving them empty and assigning them as play goes.

I'm considering airing play sessions publicly, either live through Twitch, or via Youtube with editing. This can be discussed with players, though, to make sure everyone is okay with what happens.

With all that out the way, here's a list of interested players!
  • Hoeloe - GM
  • Shinoda
  • Piter_Lauchy
  • No Lynch
  • zmonbobbo (potentially unavailable)
  • pholtos (...maybe?)
  • arabsalmon
  • bkamakaze
  • FFR
  • Mikkofier
Update!

Because of the number of players, and the fact that the scope of the game has been limited to 5, there may be another game starting eventually, being run by Minnakht. People are welcome to join that game, or be put on the reserve list for this one, but keep in mind that I'm only responsible for "Let's Fate!", and not Minnakht's game.

I'm not going to be updating the list on this thread, because frankly it's a pain to update it every time someone expresses interest, but I will be using this thread to see who is on the reserve list for Let's Fate!, so feel free to continue expressing your interest, and don't be concerned if your name doesn't appear here.

Right, I think that's everything. I'm now going to lie down and possibly sleep for several days.

Oooh man! Don't even need to post in the thread and i'm already on the list. I'm that awesome!
I recommend people who are interested to check out some videos of groups playing on the YouTubes to get a good idea of how it works.

Also.. theme... Do we plagiarize Horikawa and do a Mario-themed game or something different?

I don't have anything particular in mind, but one of the nice things about Fate is the flexibility of the setting. I'm happy to do a Mario themed game, but if players want to do something different, I'm up for writing up a different setting.

I think it would be nice to stick to raocow related themes... Mario, Mega Man, ASMT (As something separate from Mario. Vegetable powered spaceships anyone?), Cat Planet (Hurdurdur).

Come to think of it, raocow did specify in a Patreon Video that anything done by fans with the ASMT stuff is canon. We could expand that universe.

That could be fun, actually. I'm totally up for expanding the ASMT universe with an RPG.

I'm interested! I hope it isn't a problem that my whole experience with tabletop RPG is Let's Cortex. Definitely gonna check that rule book, though!

I'll be on hand during games to sort rules queries, but it will probably be helpful to have a basic idea of how the game works. Aside from that, it should be pretty friendly even if you've never played a tabletop before.

This sounds like a really fun idea. Expanding upon the ASMT universe seems like a great idea, considering that, from what I know of it, there is lots left to be seen within it.

Could you put me down as a potentially interested party, please? I've listened to a few RPGCasts on GameCola and Let's Cortex, but I'll be looking through that rulebook for certain.

I'm starting to get a few ideas already about where an ASMT expansion universe could go, so hopefully we won't be lacking in material if we decide to go with that. If and when we do, I'll start drawing up minor rules modifications (skill lists, for example) appropriate to the setting.

It would be great if we could get a variety of people as players in this game, particularly gender diversity, though I'm not going to exclude anyone from playing if they're up for it.

I'm interested, though I'm not sure if I'll be able to schedule a way to make it work. Hopefully though? Keep me in the loop.

We've now got 6 interested players. I'd like to limit the game to 5 players, to keep things in manageable scope, and I'll go with a first-come-first-served basis. If someone drops out, though, then I'll move down the list, so feel free to state interest beyond here.

I'll be honest I wasn't expecting this to get to 6 people this quickly.

That sounds like it would be great fun. What I have in mind at the moment could work with that, too. So far it seems everyone is pretty happy with setting it in the ASMT universe, so since Let's Cortex has a place based on that, it should be feasible.

Speaking of contact info, it's possibly a good idea for players to send me their Skype information via PM, so we can have some discussion. The game won't be starting for at least a week, and the players won't be fixed until then, but it would be helpful to bounce ideas, and we can start sorting character creation and things, as well as discussing when to run sessions.

So, I've been re-reading the Fate rulebook, and one of the things that bugs me is that each dice roll is a roll of four d6. I imagine most players will not have more than one d6 available, so this could potentially make dice rolling long and drawn out. I'm considering replacing it with a single d20 roll, though this will modify the probabilities somewhat (the only way to keep the probabilities with a single roll would be a d81, which is a bit ridiculous), but should speed up dice rolls. What do people think about this?

I've been trying to become a D&D DM for the longest time, so I'm interested in playing some tabletop, put me on the list

also, there are online dice rolling things, and you could even set up a campaign on roll20.net so everyone can see all the dice rolls and there are private dice rolls too

I might consider this, if anyone can understand my voice. We'll see.

I've been talking a bit with Horikawa, and it seems that an ASMT setting could work well for everyone involved, so if no-one has any objections, I plan to go with that.

Horikawa also suggested that the first session be a non-canon romp session, in order to familiarise everyone with the system and each other in an environment that won't cause long-term harm. I think this could be a good idea, but I thought I'd pose it to potential players, too.

A 'familiarize everyone with how things are gonna work' session seems like a great idea all around, honestly. I'm perfectly fine with that.
