Re: A Tabletop Game Thing Collab Project Make My Name Violet
The one I'm really interested in is the Firefly one (mainly because it's the most I'm familiar with), but I haven't played a single DnD or any other tabletop roleplaying game, so this might be a good start.
Anyway, best wishes in getting a purple hue.

Re: A Tabletop Game Thing Collab Project Make My Name Violet
I'd love to join in. :3
I've always wanted to play some sort of tabletop game, but I've never had enough real life friends to actually pull one off. ;n;
I looked up Eclipse Phase, and that looks incredible ♥
I also have some knowledge of Who, Dragon Age and Mass Effect, so there's that.

As I said in the twitter thread, sign me up! I've got some very limited experience with tabletop games, but I've been interested in trying some more. Eclipse phase sounds like a good idea.

I may be interested in this. Never played a tabletop game before and don't really have much of a clue what happens, but not to worry. I've forgotten most of what I knew about Doctor Who, same with Dragon Age. Eclipse Phase looks like it could be interesting.

This Avernum? If so that's an odd coincidence because I had just reinstalled one of those last night and played it for a bit before bed.Horikawa Otane wrote:[*]D20 Avernum

It's a universe where dragons have pet cats, where there's angry, unpredictable arch-mages with near-limitless power, and where demonic lords occasionally come in and mess stuff up for the world. Lots of politics, lots of fantasy, lots of fun.

Oddly enough, I read some Chick tracts yesterday, and lost several intelligence points.

Formally voting for Eclipse Phase. You want to run it, it looks interesting, and it won't alienate people who don't know about the universes for the other games.

I don't think I'll actually end up taking part in this. It'd be fun but I already have another campaign with a friend I'm supposed to be doing as it is. (And another irl group which hasn't met in months because conflicting schedules.)

Re: A Tabletop Game Thing (Vote in the Poll!)
My biggest worry is that last time I played, it was DnD, and I was so confused I kept derailing the game with questions and whatnot. Granted, I wasn't the only one lost, as the group only had one experienced player, but still.
My other concern is whether or not I'll be available, but I'll play that by ear.

I'm probably driving right now.

I don't think any of us have played with Eclipse Phase before, so you'll be learning right along with everyone. These aren't all subsets of DnD, they're a bunch of different systems for tabletop RPGing, of which DnD is just the most famous.alex2 wrote:I don't know how to play but I want to play so can someone teach me??
Re: A Tabletop Game Thing (Vote in the Poll!)
I have a rulebook around here for it somewhere. It's a lot more complicated than D&D 3.5e or Pathfinder but it seems to be a fairly good system once you get the hang of it.Ditocoaf wrote:I don't think any of us have played with Eclipse Phase before, so you'll be learning right along with everyone. Hey, if you know how the Warhammer systems work, how come they aren't options? I would totally be up for some high lethality grimdarkness. You wouldn't even need to know much about the setting to play Only War: you'd feel just like a real conscript sent in to a place they know nothing about to fight an enemy they only heard about on the flight over.Horikawa Otane wrote:That's the way the Warhammer systems work and Eclipse may operate on the same principles.
EDIT: Found an example of a group from Something Awful playing the game. The board they're using isn't part of the main rules but seems useful, like all rpg boards I suppose.

Hm. I don't know if I really have enough time to learn a whole other game on top of other projects, but eh. If the core rulebooks can be acquired, I'd probably be willing to play anything but the Cortex Mass Effect or the Dragon Age ones, since I'm unfamiliar with those settings and don't really have the means to become familiar with them. Eclipse Phase sounds really interesting, since I loved GITS.

Okay, that's pretty amazing. Props to them for doing it; I now want to play this game with my usual group and see if we want to buy hard copies.

Actually, 0/0 appears to be 00 in EP, and is always a critical success (with 99 always being a critical failure). At least I think so from a brief look.Horikawa Otane wrote:(0/0 being 100)

Re: A Tabletop Game Thing (Vote in the Poll!)
I get what you mean about the grimdarkness being oppressive and not fun: it's a terribly depressing setting if you play it straight. The setting was originally intended to be a giant satire of many things though - it's only comparatively recently that it's begun to be played straight. I think, for example, if you played Only War as if it was Starship Troopers (which it pretty much is - Imperial citizens are always told that aliens are cowardly and inferior in every way to humans, that is if they're told they exist at all, and that the Emperor will allow no soldier to die. So the first action of any new regiment tends to go about as well as the first drop in Starship Troopers.) then there would be more scope for something interesting. Making the players struggle not only against a hostile enemy but a completely uncaring and occasionally incompetent command would certainly bring the group together, although I admit it would be super difficult as GM to still make the game a reasonable challenge and not TPK-land would be quite hard. In regards to the lethality, it seems to be with all of the Warhammer systems that if you play them like a video game, you'll die very quickly. If you play them like a single bullet in the wrong spot could kill you (in other words if you play them like everything's real) then you stand a much better chance of living.
With regards to the other systems, Shadowrun sounds like a cool concept, as does Eclipse Phase. Shadowrun a bit more so.

Fair enough.

I guess someone else can host that if you want to play it.

Re: A Tabletop Game Thing (Vote in the Poll!)
Keep in mind that interest and ability aren't equal -- you've got a lot of votes in the poll, (and at least 13 of us for Eclipse Phase,) but by the time you're prepared and trying to arrange a time to play, only a fraction of us will probably be able to make it for any given schedule.
