Wreck It Ralph

Post by Ashan »

So, apparently Disney is teaming up with a bunch of video game companies to get the rights to use their characters in a movie that's coming out later this year (Bowser can be seen, Q-Bert, Zangeif, M. Bison, Dr. Robotnik, and Clide from Pac-Man, to name a few).
Opinions?

Watch the trailer.

Probably will fall flat, but the cameos should be cool.
"If you want to be taken seriously in the great modern world of ours, you'll need to learn how to face facts, by charging at them with a hammer or a screwdriver, freaking plunging it in the wall, and people will ask you, "what the hell are you doing?", you don't even answer them, you just keep on plugging at the wall, once you get rid of your house in that fashion you'll probably be commited, and you'll be set for life!"

ok it's clYde

Anyway the movie looks dumb to me, but idk, the animation looks smooth and everything. The point of using a bunch of random video game villains is really kind of dumb and rarely works well (see a bunch of 80's cartoons). But maybe if the story stays focused it could be memorable. The trailer doesn't look absolutely horrible at least.

It looks like it'll just be a bunch of cameos for 5 minutes or something but they put it in the trailer to get everybody who recognizes them to watch the movie

The movie looks like it'll be OKAY

Hahaha it's funny seeing bowser just thrown in there.
Yeah overall it couldn't possibly be any more cliche, and movies like this make me not want to watch any current movies. Hey, that's just my opinion.

Trailers always show off the one thing people go to the movie to see, but they pretty much show ALL of the footage that featured that "special thing" within the trailer.

It's kinda the same thing Nintendo's been doing with their Mario "gimmicks" lately.
NSMB - "LOOK GUYS! IT'S A MUSHROOM THAT MAKES YOU GIANT AND YOU CAN DESTROY THINGS!" That was featured in maybe 2 levels.
NSMBWii - "LOOK GUYS! WE BROUGHT YOSHI BACK!" Out of the like, 3 levels he was in, one was featured in the trailer.
SMG2 - "LOOK GUYS! YOSHI IN A 3D MARIO GAME!" Once again, a very minor role in the game. Albeit, utilized more than he was in NSMBWii.

Sure looks interesting, but I'm not into movies lately though. Everything produced looks just plain stupid and is made for people who watch the films without actually thinking about it's content.

Some say it is going to be the 'Roger Rabbit' of video games.

Aposke I aughta slap you for saying WALL-E was Disney. I mean, it technically was, but we're talking Pixar here.

About the movie, I think it'll be pretty good. You guys are cynics.

The interesting thing is that Wreck-It Ralph looks so much like something Pixar would do, especially with the style of animation. Everybody I've seen talking about it gets confused on it not being a Pixar film.

Good sign, I think. Since Pixar's always really, really great. So they're worth imitating (By the very studio that owns them but hey.)

I'll watch it; the main character got me interested in the few minutes of the trailer, and the animation is just gorgeous. And I'm all for Disney not making a bad decision for a movie concept every now and then.

I'll watch it.

If it's a popcorn movie, then it's exactly what I expect.

If it's actually good, then I'll be pleasantly surprised.

If not either, then there's worse things I could have spent my money on.

I personally am looking forward to this!!

Like Bwarch said, it looks very Pixar-y, and that's a pretty good thing. Even if the cameos don't play a major role or hang around for too long, I think the fact that they're in there at all is still pretty rad (judging by another shot or two, they may also essentially play the role of background extras? A lot of characters could potentially appear in that fashion). Plus I'm interested to see how the plot will go, and it seems like it'll actually portray video games decently.

...Mayyybe I'm getting my hopes a bit high here, but it does seem like a legitimate video game movie.

It was a pretty good movie.

I was really worried about it turning into "Video Game Reference: The Movie" but it turned out to be actually pretty good, and they really showed some self-control with their references, seeing as they had access to a million franchises.

I was kinda worried about trusting Disney with a bunch of franchises (they aren't always great with that, case and point) but they managed to not be like "OMG HEY KIDS IT'S MARIO AND HE'S IN A MOVIE 5 STARS I KNOW RIGHT" and they actually slipped in some more "obscure" references. Well, not so much obscure, as it is just not being blatantly obvious references. For example, the Konami code is recited and pushed into an NES controller at one point.

Oh, and I'm calling it right now: Disney Interactive or whatever they're called will be releasing a Sugar Rush game at some point in the near future.

I can't agree more with this post, except for the Konami Code part. I would not call that "not blatantly obvious" by any means - I didn't have an NES and I knew exactly what that was, and judging by the reactions of the people around me, they knew what it was. I was surprised that Mario/Luigi themselves didn't actually appear (that I remember). Did they say anywhere in the movie that Fix-it-Felix Jr. was the oldest game in the arcade? If so, when was the movie set? If it is set in 2012, Pacman would be older (only by 2 years, though).

I think this is a great movie. Like everyone else, I was worried that it would just be "Video Game Reference; The Movie", but they did a great job of keeping the references to a good level. I thought there was going to be way more references than there were, but a lot of them were confined to the beginning of the movie so that people could get all of the "OMG I know that reference" out of their systems in order to focus on the plot. Speaking of the plot, I thought it was great. Especially *spoiler*. To quote one of the people I went with: "I thought I knew how it was going to end like 5 times, but none of them were right".
The foreshadowing. I didn't pick up on any of it until it actually happened, then I remembered all the references to it. Yes, I'm talking about Turbo. The Diet Coke + Mentos cave is a smaller example of this.
Also, I would buy a Sugar Rush game, especially if Vanellope was in it and she could *spoiler*.
Glitch a few feet in either direction of where she currently is. This would have to be controlled by either being really difficult to use or by being a special item.

Everyone in my theatre laughed as well, but I'm pretty sure most of them laughed more out of an "oh, man! It's a secret code being put into a controller" kinda thing, rather than catching the fact that it was actually a famous code used for several Konami games.
ultratowel112 wrote:I was surprised that Mario/Luigi themselves didn't actually appear (that I remember).
Yeah, I was surprised by that as well. They did MENTION Mario once, but I'm pretty sure they kept Mario out of the movie just because Fix-It-Felix was, in a sense, a Mario parody anyway, so it wouldn't make much sense to have the character you're "parodying" in the same movie you have the parody character in. Probably the same reason DK wasn't in the movie. Wreck-It-Ralph was the DK character.
ultratowel112 wrote:Did they say anywhere in the movie that Fix-it-Felix Jr. was the oldest game in the arcade? If so, when was the movie set? If it is set in 2012, Pacman would be older (only by 2 years, though).
I'm pretty sure the game was set in 2012 because of that Halo/CoD parody, "Hero's Duty" where Ralph goes "when did video games get so violent!?"
I don't know if it ever made any mention of Wreck-It-Ralph Jr. being the oldest game in the arcade, though.

I did the exact same thing. I thought the whole
beacon/volcano thing
was genius.

I was imagining how the game would play out as well. I could definitely see the glitch-thing being an item, considering we saw during the race that there were Mario Kart-style blocks that let the characters to special moves and whatnot. I could imagine Vanellope's being the glitch thing.

But yeah, Vanellope definitely made a huge chunk of the movie for me. As soon as she came on screen, she seemed like she'd be a kind of annoying character, but I actually really enjoyed her. She was extremely adorable. :3
I also felt super sad when
Ralph destroyed her car. Her screams mak me crie evertim. <////3

great movie 9999/10
I kinda interpreted Vanellope's glitch thing as being more of a teleport abilitiy.
Also some people out there are definitely going to program these and they will be amazing

I'm with everyone else here that watched it. I found it fantastic. I'll just regurgitate what everyone else said so I'll just leave this here.

Right when I left the theater, I knew I had to do this.

I think the reason Mario wasn't in was due to licensing fees.

Do licensing fees really work on a per-character system or something? I would've thought they would've just bought the rights to the characters for that movie in batches.

I started walking down the aisle and I was suddenly staring at the credits. I ended up going back into a random row and watching the rest.

Actually, I know the reason for this.
I was reading an interview with one of the guys who made the film, one of the things he was in charge of were reference related things.
He said that Nintendo basically gave them access to every single character they owned for this, as long as they were not portrayed too terribly.
The reason Mario did not get in was, the team thought that having Mario just as a cameo would just be blasphemous and wrong, if Mario was to be put in, he HAD to be important to the story.
They tried for a while to find a way to change the plot so Mario would have a major role, but could not, due to time constraints.
So in the end the decided not to put him in at all, the thought was that Mr. Videogame himself deserved more than what the movie could give him, and I can respect them for that decision.
Though, the guy then said, that if there were ever a Wreck it Ralph 2, they would put a bit more effort into getting Nintendo's mascot into the film.

My brother's tried to see it at a 5PM showing Sunday night and it was sold out. They went back at 8PM the same night.

..I think it'll probably get a sequel. Plus a random commercial said it was the #1 movie in the country right now. :P

I saw it last night, and it was great! My hopes were not misplaced.

If the three original games (Fix-It Felix Jr, Sugar Rush, and Hero's Duty) were real games, I'd want to play them at least once. (supposedly this might actually be being worked on...?)
