Canada- country, people and mentality

Post by Slit08 »

Hey there guys.
Jeez, today I somehow feel so motivated writing all kind of stuff here on the talkhaus forums. Oh well...
What I want to talk about with you is the beautifull country of Canada.
Whenever I should name the country I would most likely want to visit one day I would choose Canada.
Why is that so?
I don't know if it might be regarded as a prejudice but in my oppinion Canadians are VERY friendly and polite. This observation however is based on many personal experiences.
When I still went to school many years ago I was part of a protestant church (evangelisch lutherische Freikirche/ Lutherian Protestants). One day we invited some Canadians. It was a Christian rock band. Man, these people were very friendly and it was really cool to talk with them.
A few of my friends spent their vacation in Canada and they also told me that peole there welcomed them warmly (do you even say that? ) and that they gained many friends within a few weaks of holiday they spent there.
Furthermore I watched some Let's Play of Canadians on youtube (ever realized that there are supposedly more english speaking Candian LPers than LPers from the US? Then again it might be just a coincidence) like PinkKittyRose, Proton Jon or raocow. All these guys are so amazing, most of the time VERY well mooded.
Now you guys tell me: Is it true?
Also on a whole different topic: Most of the Candian women I have seen up to now where incredibly beautifull. xD Again, coincidence? The girl that was the singer of siad Canadian rock band, other Candians I've met, also Canadian actors in TV: Does anyone know Laura Vandervoort from TV series V (also prominent for her role as super hero in Smallville)? She's really beautifull as is Robin from How I met your mother (though I don't exactly know if she actually is Canadian or just plays the role of a Canadian in said TV show).
And to cover a third positive aspect of Canada, I like the countryside, the nature. Beautifull green forests, bears... I would love to visit Canada one day. A friend told me that it happened that on one side of the road he saw a forest and on the other side of the road there would be desert.
I highly doubt he is speaking the truth though. xD I seriously cannot imagine that.
Now please tell me, that there aren't big, ugly, hairy spiders in Canda, cause I HATE spiders.

So yeah lots of things I either experienced myself or heard about Canada. But who can tell me better than you if all these things are true. :) Again, no pun is intended here. Plus it's all positive thngs I had to report here so who wants to complain about positive prejudices anyway? xD

I'm Canadian and while Canada is a nice country (lolbias), I wouldn't say that there's anything truly special about it that makes it stand out from the crowd. We have our share of jerks and not everybody is polite like you might like to believe. As for the girls being more beautiful, I've never heard that one before. I don't really think we really have a higher percentage of beautiful girls than most other countries.

Oh and we're not afraid of the dark.

We better not be, considering the daylight hours during the winter.

No, Canada is pretty swell. I am specifically from Winnipeg, Manitoba (or Winterpeg, Manisnowba). A quick reference to find it on the map is just south of those two skinny lakes northwest of the Great Lakes.

Since I want to specifically gush about Winnipeg, I will. Winnipeg is the capital city of the province. It is not terribly big, compared to maybe 8 of the other major cities. We only have 4 tall buildings in our downtown, 3 of which surround our major intersection, Portage & Main, the windiest corner in the country. Despite our size, it does of the advantage of a 'small town' feel, where everybody knows everyone. It's safe to say that this is true of our city. Our license plates do say "Friendly Manitoba". I think they look the best too.
While we are known to have the coldest winters with lots of snow, in truth, we pretty much are the ony region to get ALL the weather types. It could be Halifax snow, to Vancouver rain, Toronto smog, St. John's fog, prairie sun, and ofcoarse, Arctic cold and snow. We experience them all in moderate lengths, the only entreme being the cold. I love it all, expecially the fog, which we were privvy to twice since September.
In ancient times, Winnipeg was known as the 'Gateway to the West'.

We actually do have a legit sand desert tucked away somewhere in the south west corner of the province. And a good thing about our winters is it drives away those big creepy crawlies as well.

C'mon Bartle, quit frontin'.

My impression of Canada is the nicer, cleaner, more boring version of America with the free health cares. Except for Quebec where I imagine everybody to be really rude because of the whole "French" part of "French Canadian."

That's my impression and when it all comes down to it I would bet that Canada is more or less like anywhere else : full of people, some good, some bad, all different.
The nature of the signature is significant and natural.

I know slit is the master of irony, so I might be about a fool of myself here by agreeing with him, but those Candian women? Dang are they beautiful.

Now he's going to pop up and be all like 'joke's on you buddy - I freaking LOVE spiders', and I'm going to be like 'drat'.

And, I suppose, I'm neighbours with Sebby! I live in Saskatchewan, and I'm not sure where all of these weird new stereotypes came from recently. Not to say I'm offended, cause I could really care less about what the internet thinks of Canada, but it seems like over the past few months, we've gone from those crazies that live in igloos and try to pass off ham as bacon, to those nice people who have all the beautiful women.

I can't really say much, cause I've lived in Saskatchewan all my life. I've been to Manitoba and Alberta on a few occasions, and I was in BC a bit as well, but other than that, I don't have much experience outside of this province. Apparently my family is from Quebec (my last name is French-Canadian), but I don`t think that counts.

Also, if you hit Ctrl+Shift twice on a Canadian keyboard, you can make French symbols.
? = É
/ = é
] = ç
} = Ç
It's pretty rad.

More like it's the worst thing because it always happens when I don't want it too (that is, all the time).

Despite being Canadian also, I don't have a whole lot to say here! Corner Gas is a pretty fantastic show, though.

Fun Fact: While Mainframe also made Beast Wars, in Canada, I only knew it as Beasties, becuase rules stated you couldn't have 'war' in the title of a children's show.
Optimus Primal still said the proper title drop at the end of the 2nd episode.

Speaking of Saskatchewan, the stereotypes we have for them is that this province is 'hick country, with hillbilies and rednecks on a land that is perfectly flat and sqaure'. For a quick reference on the map, it the province that is a perfect rectangle. Their capital towncity is Regina, smallest in the land, while it's second 'major' city, Saskatoon, is bigger than it. Where they are? Meh, who cares?

Oh, we Manitobans make very much fun of them  , especially during Greycup season (football). I heard several good jokes a couple years back, here are a few I remember most:

1)Q.What do you get when you have 8 Rough Riders together (football players)
A.A full set of teeth!
2)A tornado went through Regina the other day. $4 million in improvements.
3)There is often a bet between our mayors, where the loser has to stand at the major intersection of the opposing city, wearing the opposing team jersey. Question is, Regina has a major intersection?

Feel free to stop me at any time, Ashanmaril.

Yeah, it seems to just do it on its own. That's actually how I found out about it. The weirdest one ever is when it replaces your apostrophe, ', with a `. I don't see when that would come in handy.

Yeah. I live in Regina, and Saskatoonians or whatever the heck they're called hate use because we're the capital. And actually, a lot of people think Saskatoon IS the capital. I remember watching YTV back in like... Maybe 2005 or so, and one person e-mailed Sugar and Carlos (I'm going with the assumption you used to watch YTV as well) and asked Carlos if he could name all of the capitols of each province in Saskatchewan. He would get a ding if he got it right, and a buzz if he got it wrong. He said Saskatoon was the capitol of Saskatchewan and he got a ding.

I'm interested in hearing what you Saskatchewanies think about us, stereotypes and all.

Speaking of Carlos, he is still there. He has to be the longest lasting host in YTV history.

Yeah, I popped on to YTV to see what it's like now, and he's still there.
I wonder what Sugar's up to, now. I know she's acting still (apparently she was in a couple episodes of "Weeds" or something, but I've never watched that show before), but she just kinda disappeared.
She was pretty rad.

You can't really talk about Canada as a whole unit, as it's sort of huge and the culture varies a significant amount from place to place - Newfoundland and B.C. are sort of massively different, for instance. However, there is only one way I can think of to sum up my province, and that is with this informative video about it's capital.

Not a lot I can say about Nova Scotia, or the other 3 Altantic provinces, I don't know much about it.

Prince Edward Island is the smallest of all the provinces, with the main thing going on there is potatoes. Red ones. Anne of Green Gables takes place here (despite being fiction), and the Confederation bridge links it to the mainland, one of the longest bridges on the planet. Canada was also founded here, despite not officially joining the country until years later. Capital City is Charlottetown, holding almost half of P.E.I.'s population.

Newfoundland & Labrador is our eastern most province, with Newfoundland being the island. Vikings first came here, before John Cabot came to North America (screw Columbus). Capital city is St. John's at the eastern tip, not to be confused with Saint John in New Brunswick. Newfoundland island is also weird for being timeshifted a half hour compared to everywhere else.
Interestingly, there are two very small island just south of Newfoundland Island, both belonging to France. Bet you didn't know that.

New Brunswick is in between Quebec and Nova Scotia. Only province officially bilingual. Has the highest tides on the planet, thus the water can flow both ways in some rivers, and has a magnetic hill. Capital is Fredricton, right smack in the center.
Not much to say about Nova Scotia.

In general, Atlantic Canada has it's own culture, and I wish I could say more. I am still trying to convince my family to roadtrip there. Best I could describe it, is to think of an old Atlantic fisherman, or one of those lobster trappers.

Also Newfoundland has like half a million different dialects and everyone is inbred. If you're looking for a wilderness sabbatical, this is simultaneously the best and the worst place for it. Best, because the place is, like, sixty percent forest, and worst, because oh my god rain wind fog everyday and it just don't stop. There are also coyotes, and displaced polar bears occasionally.

Argh, I forgot the fog. That's like 600 days of the year for you guys. You also get the heaviest snow.

Do you mean polar bears on the island, or in Labrador?
