I completely adored Reiko's anime debut episode, she is excruciatingly powerful. Gaslight Gatekeep Girlboss (she is a cop, she would gaslight)

Though I completely forgot that Officer Higurashi's episode had them mention that the latest hot topic J-pop girl was Namie Amuro (the episode is from 1996), who is a singer I really like now, but when I was like 10 my knowledge of Japanese musicians was nil. I did remember the Kylie Minogue mention, but that's only because I live in Portugal and my family members were there for the 80s which Kylie blossomed the most in, shout out to Love at First Sight back in the early 2000s for being a fucking bop.

Anyway um, the bridge episode where most of it is just Ryotsu just talking about his childhood friend and how he and his childhood besties went to force a bridge near Ginza to open before the dude had to move to Hokkaido due to his chronic illnesses (he was a huge bascule bridge otaku), both to make his dream of seeing it open come true and also so they have a good memory so he doesn't forget them was super sweet.

This show has incredible early Simpsons energy due to that juxtaposition of comedy and tenderness, and I think it helps that Ryotsu's just incredibly Homer coded, he's a huge dick though, but he's actually as nice as Homer when he tries. Family Guy could never

still wish i could sub the Japanese version so people could watch it beyond the unintentional gay fanservice and the male giant episode (also accidental gay fanservice), which yeah no that's based i just really like this show a lot despite it being copaganda at the end of the day

Earlier I watched the first 12 eps of Super Milk Chan's 1998 season. Total is 14, each is roughly 4 minutes long. Cute ass show, but I wouldn't recommend it to a lot of people on here since it's pretty fucking edgy. It's kind of iyashi-kei to me with how chill it is, even if bad things constantly happen.

I also feel like the cursed sword in Ep6 that makes people want to kill MAY have been a slight JoJo Part 3 reference, but I don't know how common that trope is. I know Digimon Tamers did that with Guilmon and Beelzemon's bike, and Juri compared it to a fairy tale she read once, but...

Read the first volume of Dragon Ball (og), i.e. the first 11 chapters. I think this took less time than when I binged the Portuguese dub of everything up to the big climax where Goku turns into an Oozaru. Baby Goku is the cutest damn thing. I want to protect him (he does not need protecting, he would actually be better off without me getting in his way).

Ox King and Roshi my beloveds (some of Oolong's forms were great too but he was a kid in this, also shout out to the beastman bandit that wanted to eat the sea turtle).

Lastly, reread the first six chapters of Marriagetoxin (shout outs to Johnny Birdface on Discordhaus for recommending me this). I still love the partly comedic partly serious vibes of the manga, though the fight scenes are kinda hard to follow, I feel? Regardless its pretty great, and the expressions and joke timing are top notch.

I don't remember hearing the name before, but this does look familiar. I might have seen this in a magazine or a screenshot ages ago, and I really like the style. Kinda looks like a Cartoon Network thing but also has a bit of a Dreamcast game aesthetic, which I like, now I'm curious to check it out.

Yeah Hideyuki Tanaka has a gorgeous artstyle. He's done some work for Meldac's games as well as the Bust A Groove series (a series I love from a distance, I still have to play them asap). Here's more info on him.

Really the one critique I could place on him is that he's messed with NFTs at one point, which seems to be an issue with a lot of Japanese artists (cultural differences, sadly, they don't have the same sort of commission work as we do, closest thing is the Skeb site).

correction this was satoshi okano, who did work on meldac's games like astro go go and. a few sega stuff like sonic jam and such. the rest is correct abt tanaka-san

okano-san's artwork is much more wild, much more "rubbery" in anatomy, i recommend looking up his work too, he's been posting some old art on twitter recently, his @ is okanotion.

here's an article on okano and his contributions to sonic's modern aesthetic, which uekawa later worked on to give it his own spin (i still detest most modern 3d sonic renders).

I started a rewatch of K-ON!, the first season, aka the anime that is the epitome of "Cute girls doing cute things". It was one of the first anime I watched when I was in middle school and since my tastes have certainly changed since I was 13, I was worried I'd rewatch it and dislike it. However, considering I watched eight episodes in two days - that's a lot for me - I think I still like it.

so over the last few while I watched the rest of Shield Hero.
Season 1: Actually really good!
Season 2: ...okay yeah it's necessary in the overall plot but no it did not feel like it. The worst part is that from what I can tell is that despite the Spirit Tortoise arc being this anime's version of Endless Eight, I think it actually would have benefitted from being a season all to itself - Spirit Tortoise being the first half of a two-arc twelve-episode season did not do it any favors pacing-wise.
Season 3: This just feels like season 2 part 3. Pacing is a bit better but the start of the season felt... unfocused? Like they wanted to skip ahead in the storyline but forgot that they were skipping ahead and so ended up filling a bunch of the middle of the season with flashback episodes that would have worked better if the season had been in chronological order. Except the season already is in chronological order, it's just being hampered by being another twelve-episode season.

Finally watched some anime on a whim yesterday, it was the Noko-tan anime a.k.a Shikanoko Nokonoko Koshitantan (repeat indefinitely). I knew only about the song and nothing else, and to my surprise, it's actually fucking crazy. I didn't have any set expectations, but it really reminds me of something like Bobobo with how it constantly breaks the fourth wall, has a lot of surreal humor and characters that can morph their bodies, destroy things and whatnot all for silly jokes. It took a while for it to really click with me (and I'm not completely sure if it truly did, sometimes it's so random you have to process what's even going on lol), but I still watched a lot of episodes in a row, because it's really mesmerizing, you really want to see what's gonna happen next, since it's so unpredictable.

It's fun brainrot, shitpost-esque stuff, not the most hilarious thing in the world, but it's so off the wall it works even when a joke could fall flat. The insanity just makes even the dumbest things loop back into being funny again. The characters are pretty likeable (I like Anko the least though, thankfully she's not too annoying), although due to the nature of the anime, they're varied flavors of weird, even when they look like standard archetypes. I actually consider that a plus, it's easy for characters in comedy anime to become a bit one note (or completely generic). It's not as crazy as Bobobo, but it's still way more bonkers than your average slice of life comedy, or even more zany ones like Nichijou and Kill Me Baby, I don't find it as good as the former, but I think it's better than the latter. It has a more numerous and funnier cast than Kill Me Baby, the jokes and animation are a lot better too. It's still hard to beat Nichijou though, so I don't want to compare too much, it's kind of unfair since Nichijou is possibly my favorite anime comedy (and unanimously agreed to be one of the best).

I've been watching Kaleido Star, it's such a great series, it manages to have so many intense moments with lots of stakes, while still remaining lighthearted overall, which is why it's so easy to binge watch it, I really want to kinda keep watching it nonstop. I feel quite attached to the cast overall, they all have interesting stories on why they joined the Kaleido Star (which is a circus theater), not necessarily deep or mindblowing, but it all ties to the main premise so well, and it's my biggest praise. This is just really well made, all the things that matter to the anime are nicely executed, you really care about the characters, they all have compelling traits once you get to know them, the music is extremely good and sets the mood perfectly for the scenes, we got fun moments, drama, romance, action (not in the violent sense, the performances are intense and pretty bombastic), all complemented by the soundtrack.

Might honestly be one of my favorites currently, there's a lot of the charm of early 2000s anime, if you're into that, I recommend checking it out.

I watched Kaleido Star a few years back with some friends. It caught our interest as the first episode has a nice start and introduction to everyone, along with just being caught off guard by like some very great animations when it came to characters doing the flips or acrobatics. Eventually after watching a few more episodes and looking into the production and staff, my friends and I realized why were so into Kaleido Star thus far, the anime was directed by none other than Satou Junichi, a director and writer of one of our other favorite series - Aria the Animation. So on top of some great animation and a cast with some VAs that we've heard before, one of our favourite directors was weaving a story that has some thrilling moments you'd find in a circus or just some genuine down to earth scenes with some real humanity in 'em. While I don't necessarily like it more than Aria, it's a great anime produced in the early 2000s, some of the other OVAs are s'okay too, but the best OVA has to be Kaleido Star: Legend of the Phoenix, which can be taken almost as a eplilogue for the series, along with sharing more about Layla. All in all, I can't help but say my praise for it, great anime and it feels like the G Gundam/AU to the Aria series/other anime Mr. Junichi has directed.

Great show, still holds up today. Funnily enough another series Junichi Sato directed (at least with Season 1 and then mainly storyboarding in later entries)

So yeah, I watched Dungeon Meshi and really enjoyed it, Senshi is the best fucking character in this anime, an endearing and non-chalantly badass short old man, obviously due to him being really knowledgeable about the dungeon and the monsters, while also being a supreme cook, he basically drives the show (despite not being central to the main plot, which is really interesting, we only learn about his backstory way later on), although most of the other ones are enjoyable in their own way too, Laios is really funny and lovable (can't describe him in another way other than a himbo), Chilchuck and Marcille bounce off the others' personalities really well. It gets surprisingly heavy later on, I was expecting it to be a whimsical comedy about cooking with a fantasy setting, but no, there's a legitimately good story and worldbuilding going on, which ties a lot of characters, it doesn't feel like only the protagonists matter in this world. Looking forward for the next season.

I also watched the first episode of the new Ranma 1/2, it was nice, I prefer the old opening song, but this one is fine too. Girl Ranma feels more "cutiefied" (moe) than the original, but I might just be misremembering.
