I played through New Super Mario Bros 2 recently.

Ugh, Nintendo, why. This is the first game in a while that I've felt was an absolute chore to get through, and the least fun I've ever had playing a Mario platformer. When the New Super Mario Bros series started, I was ecstatic. More 2D Mario platforming! Sure, the game was a little easy, but it was still great. Then there was New Super Mario Bros Wii. It was... kind of samey, but hey, the first game was good, so why not?

Then again.

And again.

I don't know if it's burnout on this series or something else, but I really disliked this game. Is it actually a worse game than NSMB/W/U? Or am I just tired of this? I can't tell, and that's the sad part. I can't actually point to anything and say it was glaringly bad. There was nothing super offensive. Yet... There was nothing engaging. I was going through the motions in paint by number stages. Thinking back on it I can scarcely remember any of them. It was a competently put together game. But this is Mario. "Competently put together" isn't good enough with the pedigree this series has.

I'm something of a completionist when it comes to Mario, but I had so little fun with this game, I don't even know if I want to get everything...

Just finished up world 4 in super scribblenauts with my favorite moment yet, a quick sand worm losing to a slow aggressive invincible living cheese. I don't know why I find that hilarious.

I know what cat-avatar-person is saying about the third Seymour visit. This is just stupid.
At least with the last one, I'd be having trouble but I could still get him down to like 6000HP before he killed me. This one has like 70000HP and I don't think I've even gotten him down to 60000HP before he does a combo of like 5 attacks and kills my whole party at once.
I don't even know what to do. He has an attack that does like 2000-2500HP to all my party members and half the time before I even get another turn he'll do another 2 attacks and finish off any of my surviving party members. I didn't even think I was that underleveled but I guess I just need to sit around grinding for a while. The enemies in the preceding area were giving me trouble too so I guess the game just wants me to grind or something. There wasn't much of a transition. It just went straight from enemies I could deal with to enemies that take a zillion damage and kill me in one hit.

Yeah I basically bought NSMB2, played through it once (I don't know if you can even call it a playthrough since I used cannons to get to the boss) and never touched it again. I literally have a few hours of playtime on NSMB2. It's not a really bad game or anything, I think I just got bored of the NSMB series.

I think you have to finish off Vile before defeating the Mavericks. Bit and Byte will show up no matter what during a playthrough regularly.

No one bother to read this post, it's stupidly long because I want to talk about games oh man.

CAREFUL, MAYOR SPOILERS AHEAD, DON'T READ IF YOU DON'T WANT
So, you're currently at Chapter 8? What will your reaction be when I tell you that there are 25 Chapters? (IMO Chapter 19 is the longest.)
I don't aim to make the game super-ultra-difficult because that's just silly; at this point I had worked up to about 4.0~4.5 (the game itself is suggesting ~5.0+) but the point is that I think chapter 8 had a few too many "okay thanks that was absolute BS" parts to it that was just... dumb. Also dodging isn't the most reliable thing when it really needs to be.

Also I'm well aware of the length of the game; kinda hard to avoid that 'spoiler', unfortunately (also I did actually beat chapter 9 at some point and that would've been a REALLY underwhelming 'final boss' anyway, so... yeah).
Ashan wrote:I'm having so much trouble trying to use Rikku in FFX. I feel like I'm missing out by not using her though, so I think I'm just doing something wrong cause she feels really useless right now.
Rikku is kinda weird and doesn't really do much besides steal and use items... if you're like me and horde as many items as possible, she probably won't see much practical use >_> But you CAN toss out easy damage with consumables, for what it's worth (and if you look up the overpowered Mix combinations and manage to get the components, there's that too... but of course you need to actually GET them first).

Seymour the Third and *spoiler boss that starts with Y* are usually considered the hardest bosses of the main game, so... yeah. But it's more like "you just have to know what's coming and you'll be fine, but if not, too bad"...

PRO TIPS:
Cast Bio on Seymour immediately, it'll account for a huge portion of your total damage
You can cast Haste on Seymour himself; Seymour can only act once in between each action of the Mortiorchis(sp?), granting him more turns to take poison damage, and this will 'de-sync' them so they can't Zombie/Full-Life combo you all the time.
Dispel his Reflect ASAP so he harms himself/has to waste time re-casting it
Summon a full-overdrive Aeon right before he uses Total Annihilation to deal major damage and tank the hit. Bahamut will likely kill him due to his ridiculous (limit-breaking) damage, though you may want to save him for the following boss that's also rather tricky? (will deal about 50-60% of its HP)

I think that should be enough to get you through! Though if the monsters on the mountain are giving you a lot of trouble, you may want to get a bit stronger too (or change up your strategies).

I'll give it another shot later, but one mistake I made was stocking up on lives. Dying a lot wasn't really a problem in the first three stages, and there are no checkpoints to lose in the last one, so having fewer lives just allows me to get out of the final stage and refill my sub tanks for another shot a lot quicker.

I only played it briefly, but if I'm understanding it correctly, it has this deep powerup system that you're... actively punished for *using*? What? Why? Also, I got as far as one boss, but died, and... got a "Mission Failed" screen, which seemed to progress the game, locking me out of that mission again? Admittedly, it's been a while since I played, so my memory may be hazy, but...
Going to Zero 1 after playing Zero 4 in the past was... yeah, awkward, especially getting MISSION FAILED after dying instead of 'okay you died now try again'; but isn't there still a 'retry' option on the Mission Failed screen as opposed to quitting and moving the story without it or something?
And I concur that being punished for using Cyber Elves (before Zero 4) is just dumb. But you shouldn't worry about your ranking the first time through, leave that for replays. Except that outside of Zero 4, you need high/A-ranks to gain the boss weapons. Oh, okay then, great. Thanks.

For what it's worth, Zero Collection does have 'Easy Mode' that takes you through all four games at maximum power with no penalties. Although I didn't actually play it myself because it started me off with a million upgrades that I didn't know how to use so I just played the games normally, but... yeah.

Honestly Group Hug/Therapy will carry you the entire game; Peach is stupidly broken as a healer. Even if you give her the Lazy Shell and majorly reduce her healing power, it's still overpowered. So yeah.

Fakeedit: Whoops nevermind you already beat the game. My point still stands.

Alice wrote:I replayed most of Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia on hard mode yesterday. Still one of my top two favorite Castlevania games. Though I will pass on ever beating it on hard mode lvl 1 again. That was an absolute nightmare.
OH MAN!!!!!

After listing Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia in the 'bragging' thread and then remembering hearing how absurdly brutal Level 1 Hard Mode is (I played it before through New Game+, but not when starting from scratch), I decided to put my money where my mouth is and play Level 1 Hard Mode from scratch.

Wow it's brutal you have no idea. Took me over half an hour just to get past the first two rooms of the first level. Currently I've made it up to entering Misty Forest Road and every new level just continues to be brutal. It's basically an entirely different game than the rest of the... game; you pretty much need to know exactly how many hits every given enemy will take, and know exactly how big your hitboxes are/know that you die in 1-3 hits from anything at all. It is forcing me to actually use Glyph Unions and items though; I never really bothered with them before because the game's been doable without them on previous modes.

Alice wrote:
Fluffi-dono wrote:He can almost instantly kill you with one hit.

And I'm sure it's Blackmoore.
It is, I went and double checked after the fact. And one hitting isn't such a problem with him. The real issue, at least on hard mode, is trying to get his medal. He's easily one of the most absurd bosses to get the medal on because he's huge, likes to advance forward enough to give you basically no horizontal maneuvering room, then on top of that he attacks the lower area quite often while you only have double jump at this point. And if you manage to dodge his attacks with just double jump you then have to make a split second judgment call on whether you try to stay high and dodge his next attack if it's low or drop down and dodge that attack if it's a high one.

It is possible but it's one of the most absurd things I've ever tried to do. And I wouldn't recommend trying it under level 60 at the minimum just to make it end quicker. (When I successfully did it I was like level 180ish or so.)
Man, Blackmore's one of my favorite bosses (though he may not be if I ever get there...). The first time through the game, I 'overcomplicated' things by noticing that Blackmore himself made specific motions to telegraph his shadow's attacks and used that to avoid everything, but... eventually I realized that the shadow itself telegraphs things well enough and only has a few specific attack patterns to use so he's really not all that bad. Having THE SHINING LASER Nitesco really helps for damage output too. But I think if you have THAT much trouble getting his medal then you may not be paying attention enough?

swirlybomb wrote:Having THE SHINING LASER Nitesco really helps for damage output too. But I think if you have THAT much trouble getting his medal then you may not be paying attention enough?
Nitesco plus the level three sword glyph seems to have the highest damage output and attack range/arc from what I've seen, at least when you're using the glyph union. It's not a bad combo when just using the glyphs either. The sword glyph allows you to better deal with enemies that will just tank through the nitesco glyph.

And it's not a matter of not paying attention. On hard mode you have almost no room to maneuver and his attacks come basically nonstop giving you very little time to even react. That combined with the fact that he seems to favor the attack where he tries to hit you with his fist down low makes it really hard to avoid getting hit on hard mode. I've commonly had times where he attacks low like that so I jump and extend the jump as long as possible but still get hit because he immediately throws another punch below me.

I think it's Melio Falcis (lv3 scythe) that has the highest damage output? But if we're talking the SHINING LASER SWORD Glyph Union, then... yeah, anything will go down in a couple hits from that, especially if Death Ring, Dominus Agony, and/or Arma Custos are also involved.

BUT THAT'S CHEATING >:O!!!!!!!!!!

And to be fair it's been a long time since I've played so you could be right; I just don't remember having that much trouble.
If you're talking about the attack I'm thinking of...? I believe he swipes his claw 'high' first (that you can duck under), then low (jump over), then 'high' again. So duck-jump-duck to evade. But again it's been a while so I could be mistaken.

So after doing a bit of research, it seems that rank is mostly for show in the first game, though it starts to affect "EX Skills" in the second and third, whatever those are.

Asking as a perfectionist who hates missing out on stuff... How feasible is it to get A or S ranks? Are the games set up for it better than the classic and X series? And do the games provide means to retry if your rank is lower than you'd like? Because watching Bean and RoahmMythril's LPs, I've seen some utterly insane things you need to do in order to perfect run stages. Especially the bosses, who can be so horrifically random...

I think for a first playthrough, you shouldn't even really bother with rank. In Zero 1, it just gives bosses EX Attacks that you can't even learn! In 2-4, you get skills from them for getting something like an 86 (A) or higher.

Zero 1 is the hardest to get an S-Rank in, by far. You lose out on points after more than three bars of damage, meaning in most cases, you can't even get hit once by a boss. 2's the second hardest to me, but at least you can learn boss skills. 3's hard but actually fun, and 4 wasn't that bad to do an S-Rank run on and is definitely the best choice for an A-Rank playthrough.

If you want A/S ranks, you basically need to be perfect and never do anything wrong ever- no Cyber Elves, don't get hit, kill lots of enemies, beat the level fast. Just don't even bother unless you're the kind of person that likes that kind of 'challenge'. And the only way to 'retry' is to not save and reload your old file and try again, so... yeah.

Re: Blackmore;
oh right I can just play Boss Rush on an old file to fight him for myself ha ha ha yeah okay

Everything he does is "predictable" and avoidable- managed to beat him taking only one or two hits (could do it with none after a few tries). The attack that I discussed in my last response was actually the opposite- jump over the first claw, duck under the second, then jump again; if that's worth anything.

...Also I accidentally discovered that loading my current Lv1 file for Boss Rush automatically bumped me up to level 50. So that's something new I learned.
And then I beat him again with my 'subpar' glyphs/equipment/lack of double-jump :v So I think it just takes practice.

It's kind of a conundrum. I'm, like I said, a bit of a perfectionist, but I usually avoid such "bragging rights" challenges, unless there's some reliable way to deal with them (such as the battle ranks in the Advance Wars games, where you can save in battle to experiment). But every so often, you'll get a game that *requires* this kind of perfection in order to unlock tangible rewards, which kinda makes me cringe. My perfectionist side demands I at least try, and if I'm not able to do them, I feel like I've not fully completed that game.

To this day, I still feel like I haven't "finished" Resident Evil 4, for instance. Not because I haven't completed Hard Mode. That's just bragging rights, and I don't find higher difficulty levels especially "challenging" (nor rewarding) because just about all they tend to do is ramp up the damage enemies can both deal and receive, which makes them more tedious than hard. No, it's because I'm simply no good at the Mercenaries minigame, and therefore can't unlock the Handcannon. I don't technically even *need* it, since I have two better unlockable weapons, but its existence -- knowing it's there, but being unable to get it without loads and loads of practice, trial, and error -- just bugs me.

That said, once I get to the Zero series, I won't worry *too* much about rank, at least my first time through each game. It's more important that I *learn* the games before trying to *master* them, after all.

Wow, so that third Seymour fight ends up being pretty easy if you just kinda brute force your way through.

I basically just ran around grinding for a while last night until Tidus learned Hastega, and then I filled all of my aeons' overdrive meters to full before the battle, then I just went in, casted Hastega, and ran through my full list of Aeons, using their overdrives one at a time and that killed him. At one point he got a turn where he casted reflect on himself but immediately after that I was able to cast Dispel on him and go back to doing crazy amounts of damage to him. In the end he had like 3 turns.

Congrats on beating Seymour Flux. He catches *everyone* off guard the first time through; the Aeon Overdrive strategy is a perennial favorite.

There's another "That One Boss" coming up... I won't spoil too much, but a word of warning...
When this boss -- and you'll know it when you see it -- attempts to zombify your entire team... don't be too quick to remove it from everyone. It has an instant death attack that can -- and *will* -- kill the entire team unless they either have "Deathproof" armor (unlikely) or the Zombie status.

Oh yeah, Hastega is something you should really have by this point too. But if Aeon-rushing works, it works!

Cleared the Skeleton Cave on Order Of Ecclesia today... wow that was pretty ridiculous. Torpor came in SUPER-handy for Misty Forest Road; I really only used it a bit during my very first run through the game (funny enough, also finding it very useful on Misty Forest Road to freeze the Grave Digger enemies, since I wasn't skilled enough to pass them otherwise), but I imagine it works on every 'human-type' enemy, which could definitely be useful in this run.

I don't know if I ever get into the MMZ games. It just doesn't interest me much. It's too different from Classic and X for me to care about it for now.

Just made it past the part in Secret of Mana that made me ragequit last time, "Cute Little Spiky". The super wonky controls, hitboxes and AI really bothered me at the time, and when that boss made me feel like I had no control at all I just didn't wanna play anymore.

This time around I've got more of a feel for all the things, and while fighting still feels like a clusterfuck I'm actually having alot of fun this time around.
