What games are you playing?
Re: What games are you playing?
Decided to play through Earthworm Jim 2 on Difficult for the first time tonight. And uhh, suddenly it's a video game. Levels I've been able to beat through random face-smashing since I was a kid, suddenly making me learn them. The Puppy Love levels actually requiring the use of the dive button ever. And OH MY GOD THE FINAL LEVEL. You pretty much have to play absolutely perfectly to get to the end fast enough, unless I missed something huge.
I also took the time to look around in the levels as I never bothered to as a kid, found some areas I've legitimately never seen in like fifteen years. Fun times.

Took me about the same, though I probably tried around eight separate times going back a couple years or so. Still, glad to finally have it *done*, so I can move on with the game.FluffiMasta wrote:How long did it take you?

Re: What games are you playing?
I think you're spot-on with my assessment of the game so far. It really hurts going from The Minish Cap to Phantom Hourglass because you get to see the drop off in just about everything. I can still play it and currently think it's passable, but the look, the sound, the dungeon design, being forced into using silly gimmicks like all touch-based controls that lowers the overall difficulty and having to make noises to get a required ship part on the cheap that just make me scratch my head.TheFinalSentinel wrote:I wouldn't say great, but they're not completely terrible.
In fact, I kinda have a soft spot for Phantom Hourglass.
Spirit Tracks, not so much. :/
Also screw touch controls; they'd have been much better otherwise.
It's the very weak dungeons that are bumming me out the most after having played the Temple of Droplets and Palace of Winds in the last week. This game feels like it's on par with the respectable Dragon Ball: Origins, but this Zelda, yo. You know what I mean? Anyway, I'm up to the Temple of Courage, which is the third dungeon in this game that exists.

The transport gimmicks in the DS Zeldas are shit and the central dungeon gimmicks in the DS Zeldas are also shit

also, re: DS Zeldas, every time someone says something about PH and ST I just feel the urge to stay as far away from those as possible because they always sound absolutely terrible

I guess the main reason I like those games so much is that they were my first Zelda games. Lackluster childhood, I know.

Re: What games are you playing?
The DS Zelda games aren't THAT bad.
Phantom Hourglass had the Temple of the Ocean king which was tedious and kind of unfun since you had to do the same sections over and over again throughout the game.
Spirit Tracks basically fixed that so the only real obvious issue I could see with Spirit Tracks is if you don't like the train travelling, and I could understand that.

also, i've been playing VIP1 on and off for the past few weeks
so far, worlds 1-3 beaten without tools
at Jungle River (world 4)
places i felt i was close to cracking thus far:
i wonder how Missingno. will treat me
badly, i presume
i don't expect to beat that one toolless (or at least without farming for 99 lives in To Chase a Shell or something)
same with ( ^ω^) Smooooth~

Re: What games are you playing?
Three more dungeons down in Phantom Hourglass yesterday, so I'm on the sixth now with the Temple of Ice. The Goron Temple was the best of a weak bunch so far since tracing a path on the DS screen with Bombchus was actually fun, and the boss incorporated that mechanic along with another that I thought worked well.

Re: What games are you playing?
Anybody ever tried out Crypt of the Necrodancer? I bought it a few Steam sales ago and just tried it for the first time on a whim. The music is amazing, and the gameplay is like a mixture between a rhythm game and a roguelike. If you're a roguelike fan, it's definitely worth a play.
I'm probably driving right now.

Re: What games are you playing?
Gradius V. Had the best run yet, in spite of several stupid mistakes (mostly in Bio and Asteroid).
Made it through Liquid with far less deaths than I was anticipating for my first time, but choked right as I was about to kill Circle Core. Seriously, took down Rolling Core on my second to last life, was doing SO damn well against Circle Core with that life for so long before the choke.
Last life kinda caught the tail end of the choke. :/
I feel like next time, I can probably make it to Boss Rush 2 with at least 1 credit left, assuming I don't do dumbs in Bio and Asteroid. (Seriously, fuck those regrowing walls in Bio though. My first time, I somehow made it past them with only 1 death, but now I can't figure out what the hell the way to go about it is or how I did so damn well.)
I have no delusions that High Speed Zone my first time would have been anything but a slaughterfest.
P.S. I REALLY want to try Necrodancer one of these days. Would totally buy a dancepad for it too.

Necrodancer is fantastic, got it a while back and played a fair bit of it, I'm sort of waiting until the final release to play any more though, don't want to get burned out on it too soon.

Re: What games are you playing?
Second half of Phantom Hourglass is definitely making up for the lull that was the majority of the first half. I thought it was going to be dreadful at first, but it's getting back to being an okay game that's still a disappointment coming off of the GBA one.

Re: What games are you playing?
Augh, I was choking so hard my last run in Base of all levels. Cell hacked away even more, and I ended up dying in the intro phase of the boss in Asteroid.
On a non-Gradius V note, Brawlhalla is pretty neat. The fact that there's a neutral charge attack really fucks with my Smash Bros. instincts though.
EDIT: As I play it, Brawlhalla has quite a few issues that need to be addressed. My first and foremost complaint, the movesets—or at least for the characters I have played—need a bit of a tune-up in consistency. For example: Diving diagonal up is a strong attack, but diving diagonal down is a weak attack... why? That... I can't even fathom the decision behind that.
Also, I'm not a fan of the hitstun in it. I don't know what it is, but it just rubs me the wrong way for some reason.
Most of the rest just falls under tweaking and fine tuning.
It's still in beta, so I guess it gets a bit of a pass, but it just doesn't feel good to me right now.

Re: What games are you playing?
So I finally beat the first gym in a pokemon fangame called pokemon reborn.
Took the help of two layers of toxic spikes and a lot of good fortune to succeed (took 4 attempts).
Oh and the reasoning why? Electric gym with pokes that love to paralyze you and sonicboom you. Blargh the pain.

Made it to stage 4 and quit just before unlocking my 4th credit.

Yeah! Gradius buddies!
You should also check out Gradius Gaiden if you haven't. It's probably my favorite of the series. Still need to get past Moai Zone though...
