Rom hacks that fit these themes?

At some point, might do something else first not sure yet. I am going to do some rom hack themed projects.However I am not qualified or knowledgable enough to pick myself.So I thought I would get some opinions about what I should play for each theme.

The project themes are:

America vs Japan - I am looking to do 2 or 3 american made hacks, and 2 or 3 japanese made hacks.I really don't know where to get the japanese hacks besides the vip and mario x world/luigi adventure stuff so any help there as well would be great.

Oldschool vs New School - I want to do 2 or 3 hacks to represent both where hacking was in the beginning as to compared to now.

Mainstream vs Underground - 2 or 3 of the more famous and known hacks and 2 or 3 of the lesser known hacks.

Thanks for any help.Also if you have any other ideas for themes I could do let me know.
