Three things to ask about
  • In the room before Wendy with the on/off switches, the only thing scrolling is the background. Is this deliberate?
  • I noticed the key in the question block in the final area of 'hell coop'. Is there a secret exit?
  • Using the power-baloon glitch (holding left and right directions at same time) I got behind the goal (which didn't spawn, probably because the p-baloon was still active) in the final area of 'phoenix pit' and I saw there were Yoshi wings in the question block. Again, does this lead to a secret?

1- wait what? The lava doesn't move up and down when you press the switches??
What the hell happened in this thing, that doesn't make any sense.

2- before I modified the koopas, the key was used as a stepping stone over the the munchers.
Wait... in said last area, does the layer 2 work, can you interact with it and all, or is it all weird again.

3 - no, though I don't know what it's doing there. I'll just remove it.

edit - man, speaking of layer 2, like, all the other layer 2 levels work well? The phoenix pit's first two stages, basically all room but the 'mushroom platform' of the wendy castle, the second part of both the 'betrayal' and 'heaven'...

1- no lava at all

2- I'm not sure how it's supposed to work, but I was able to complete the level alright. It scrolls rapidly up when you stand on it (like the rope level, 'oops') or down with you if you're falling, and scrolls back and forth horizontally too.

3-...

edit- yeah, I think everything else was as it should be. The on/off room was strange because there seemed to be something missing and I wasn't sure if it was a joke or something.

Remember the one room with the sumo, and the door that just didn't appear? It's like the exact same thing happens.

So now the room before leads to a single one-room level, so by going exiting through screen 0, which was my original fix, it should work properly now.

Dang it peeps, wait for the official release!

Also that's Holy Orders from Guitly Gear. Though that's an older version of the hack as that music now plays in a different room.

That's a very good choice for the endgame. Admittedly I haven't heard it with SMW instruments, but I like the original.

The rest of the choices are good to. I have to see all levels to see how well they fit, but that will happen eventually.

I haven't really been impressed by this hack quite yet based on the videos I've seen, but at least one problem was soothed by reading your music choices - I hadn't heard anything I was very fond of in the videos you posted, and I'm biased against FFVI, so hearing the songs from that game didn't help my opinion any (and it looks like there's a third, so oh boy), but reading the full "tracklist", it's good to see some lesser-known and more varied songs getting into your hack - Mr. Explorer I've always been fond of, and I'm surprised and impressed to see Matoya's Cave from the original Final Fantasy hidden somewhere in the game, as well as a tune from Ristar, which has a really good soundtrack I think.

Anyway. I'm rambling and I don't want this post to sound really bitter or anything, I just wanted to point out that at least some of the music in the game I'm going to like. I don't mean to come off like "Ohhh this hack has no music I like and my opinions matter more than the Internet so I'm gonna complain like a stinky old man". I guess I'm just sorry I have so little to say about the hack that I enjoy.

Plus it doesn't really help when every criticism I've seen is brushed off with "oh well i like it that way". It's great that you like it, but I personally feel the hack shouldn't be just for you, it should be for you and the player to enjoy together, in a way.

The reason why I'm dismissive about some of the criticism are, well, those that I dismiss go against what I'm trying to do. The hack is more of an experimentation, and now what I would consider a 'genuine finished hack', more like a series of experiment. Some of these include background/forground explorations - and since they are experiments I believe I need to keep the sucesses as well as the failures, for the sake of fairness.

The result is, yes, an uneven difficulty curve and some akward level.

The joke of a narrative is really just me being silly, as usual.

So yeah, if something just flatout doesn't work, or something is a lot more awkard then I see it, I want to know it, I want to know how things could be done differently, but just telling me 'this is bad' or 'I don't like this' doesn't help me at all, and I WILL be dismissive.

The new coins are looking pretty good, I'd say. Seeing you having trouble with the boo-rings today reminded me of how you had a similar arrangement set up later on, only this time with (fast) autoscrolling. That was probably the single most difficult (or 'awkward') thing in the hack that I remember.

I don't remember the munchers, but i must say i'm not a fan of the coins. Maybe this was the intention but teeth are such solid bulky things that when they're there as coins and there are lots of them the screen feels very crowded. Not sure what i think about the fact that they dance...hmm

Hey raocow, aren't you using Romi's addmusic? Didn't ya know you can change the title screen music with it too?

Look for this in the addmusic configuration thing that has the list of all the songs. It's at the very top so you shouldn't have any trouble.

[SETTINGS]
Create.msc=1
FreeRAM=7EC100
TitleMusic=01
[OVERWORLD]
0A=Starlit SkyS.txt
0B=
0C=
0D=
0E=

If I were to set
Titlemusic=01

to

Titlemusic=0A

I'd hear Starlit Skys.txt in the title screen. (Where you'd see the giant SUPER MARIO WORLD text.)
