Non-Punishing Romhacks. Alternative Title: I Don't Want Kaizo Thank You

Post by OnlyCatapults »

Hey all!

I've been on a bit of a romhack craze lately and I've been trying to find a lot of hacks (SMW and otherwise) that allow me to play the game with "Nintendo"-level difficulty, if that makes sense.

Do you lovely people have any suggestions?

Also, what is the general consensus among ya'll about crazy difficulty in romhacks? Is an element of good level design accessibility? I realize raocow plays some crazy things, but what about the rest of us?

You can filter uploads by difficulty as judged by the SMWC submissions moderation team. Most of the "normal" category should fit your bill

Reviving this thread with a question: In regards to SMWC's difficulty rating metric, where would the original SMW land? I don't know what the baseline for their system is.

Probably normal. Possibly between Easy and Normal.

I can suggest my own ROMhacks, The Hooray! - Fishing Season and Fishing Season 2

also anything by Gamma V (although consume in moderation).

these are the ones I can think about off the top of my head, sorry for being two months late with that.

I feel like accessibility is important, but so is knowing your audience. Some people are okay with Kaizo, others are okay with VIP-style difficulty, others are more into Nintendo-style games... I personally stick to Hard/Very Hard.

After getting used to the SMBX engine, SMW feels... off and slow? So I'm trying to work my way up to hard, to one day eventually LP ASMT since I've done both SMBX Talkhaus games. :D
