The main branch for VBA is outdated, yes. VBA-M and VBA-Next are far more up to date.
With that said, in the case of casual usage vanilla VBA should be sufficient.

That is true. If you don't care about things like emulation accuracy or performance, then any Emulator should suffice for almost any game (Libretro wiki has a good list of which games are incompatible for each of their cores, which should get almost all emulators that are worth using)
