Re: Sonic the Threadgehog
Copy-pasting my hot takes on the Frontiers trailer from the Youtube comment section:
This looks VERY ambitious. I'm glad that they're taking another year on it.
My first thoughts are mixed. The idea of an open-world Sonic game is really interesting, but the gameplay style they choose can make or break it. Using the boost formula would probably not work well, since the environments would have to be huge and relatively empty to compensate for Sonic's speed so you're not crashing into something every second. I can see the Adventure style/speed limit working well for this though, maybe even incorporating a run button like Lost World had to only go really fast when you want to.
The environments, while really pretty, look a bit too... normal for my taste, as well. When I think of Sonic, I think of how the levels put a spin on the classic level themes. Hill Top is just a mountain level, but the vast cloud expanse in the background and combining it with the lava made it unique. Lost World made you go through a temple, an outside area, and then really abstract mirror and snake rooms. Pumpkin Hill was a valley, but Halloween themed. Lava Reef was a really cool volcano cave but with the gimmick of it cooling into a crystal palace. All of the Ark levels in SA2 were also really unique takes on the lab trope. I'm hoping we still get those fun and interesting takes on level themes over more realistic environments.
Of course, it's still far too early to make any serious judgments. This is a really exciting time since the last main game we got, Forces, was the epitome of a mid and safe Sonic game. I'm glad they're trying to do something different!!

nw on the pronoun confusion, mit uses both she/her and they/them and just has they/them listed on her twitter right now
Re: Sonic the Threadgehog
turning someone elses accomplishment into a platform for you to complain about nintendo is kinda insane behavior not gonna lie
it is so insanely cool to see you two work on an official sonic thing, next up is crepe and mit and presley spriting sonic the hedgehog 5

Re: Sonic the Threadgehog
it's incredibly telling that sega's main focus for frontiers' teaser trailer is just combat and not like. going fast, platforming, engaging levels... there's a segment with rails but lmao, rails. we are so screwed as usual (or should i say sonic team is, i'm just gonna laugh)

Re: Sonic the Threadgehog
I'm not one to be a downer when it comes to games, but man, Frontiers is looking pretty rough
The overworld doesn't have that Sonic charm at all, and the "video game" set pieces in the sky are SUPER jarring and ugly. The movement looks fine I guess, but it confirmed my fear that, in trying to keep modern Sonic's speed intact, the world is barren and lifeless. No vibrant environments like the zones of the classic games, no wacky takes on traditional themes like the adventure and modern games... I don't really know what the vibe is that this game's going for. Even the technological themes aren't super apparent; Forces' Eggman Empire Fortress levels and Metropolis literally do it better somehow.
The fact that this is what they're showing and the game comes out in only a few months worries me. Lookin' like another rushed Sonic release. :(

Re: Sonic the Threadgehog
Some weirdo Sonic fans are going insane at SEGA not letting people record stuff at SGF because Frontiers is still unreleased, and that's really funny. Did game expos ever let people film shit? I don't think so... People keep bringing up Maximilian filming SF6 but i feel like they're forgetting Max is a fighting game YouTuber, he gives advertising and good word of mouth to the game.
Sega doesn't acknowledge Sonic YouTubers outside of Game Grumps and all they do is shit on the bad games as their sole gimmick in Sonic LPs.
Some footage still came out recently, and Green Hill is confirmed, as always.
