Lunatic Quark vs. Cheez

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/ou-264046399

1-0

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/ou-264052242

2-0

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/ou-264056638

2-1 (but he won already)

I lucked out on a team with pretty good setup/stally synergy stuff, and Lunatic wrecked me anyway. Mostly with Yukari. I always thought Spiritomb were a little more fragile, but nope!

GG, Quark! Now go get 'em!

Hey guys good news, I won't be requiring you guys to send me your team choice from round 4 on (for posterity I'll still require it round 3 since I have been). The only reason I did it initially was due to not knowing whether or not you guys would see your opponents team or not pre-fight. With OU that isn't an issue, so I'll no longer need to know which team you picked, so long as you stick to one team the whole time.

Working idea for next tourney: Swiss style (basically means everyone gets to play the same number of rounds)
Both people share the same pool of 12-18 randomly selected pokemon

I think the pools should probably be separate. Otherwise a lot of the matchups will probably be close to mirror matches. =/

huh, did not realize that actually

One thing I like about these tourneys is when you suddenly do really good with a pokemon you didn't expect to do good with, like Spiritomb and Marowak for me. I think this format in particular is better at doing that than the past 2 tourneys.

Also it seems like a lot of the time pokemon that are generally tougher like Dragonite are at lower levels than weaker pokemon. I assume that was done on purpose to keep the balance, or am I just imagining things?

Yup, though to be fair regular randomons on Showdown does the same thing.

We set levels based on tiers, though with some minor edits to make up for mons whose mega evolutions change their tier (Beedrill is UU because of it's mega, for example, but since this tournament has no megas we couldn't have it as low leveled as, say, an Azelf.) Some particularly bad mons were given further level boosts. For future tourneys I can tweak the levels to help mons that don't pull their weight.

I should maybe look at movesets when I pick my team rather than just "ooh, I know that pokemon, let's go with that". That said, hooray for pokeffectiveness. gg Slime, enjoy your nice shiny upper bracket.

As a reminder please use OU format from now on.

I should have pms sent to all round 3 participants (Animita, bbbrrr_it_cold, bkamakaze , Kuupa, Minnakht, Slimeman01, Wolfolotl and Zyglrox Odyssey have byes for round 3) besides falky and the winners of meta - 8bitfusion and fluffimasta-qazcake at this point. If you have not received your round 3 pm yet please pm me.

Oh and as another note, if at any point you get zoroark in your team feel free to rearrange the team order to however you wish given how zoroark's ability works.

I'm calling round 2 here. Meta moves on due to 8bitfusion never getting back to me about team choices, dog in da grass moves on likewise due to RenaTurnip not responding.

Matches for round 3:

I've given fluffi and qaz an extra day or two to get their match in. Winner fights Xirix. Round ends next Saturday at some point in time during the day. Please remember to do all matches in the OU format.

Still need team choices from a couple people, remember to send me your choice pre-fight if you haven't.

Round 3:
Xalnop v Telamon
http://pokemonshowdown.com/replay/ou-265223812

1-0 Xal

http://pokemonshowdown.com/replay/ou-265228339

2-0 Xal

Xal wins

Calamalamariari was so clutch game one walling out with the rest superpower for the win

Second game was a lot more of a battle of prediction and switch outs, but in the end, a ice beam freeze secured victory. Telamon was a good opponent and I hope they had fun battling.

Indeed I did, and if I had to lose, I'm glad it was because of a pokemon with such an awesome nickname!

There are a few ways to deal with that Slurpuff.

First, it's not that fast. There are some Choice Scarf mons that can handle it, as well as priority users (anything with Bullet Punch basically straight-up wins.)

Second, you could just not let it Belly Drum. Lots of the random mon sets have Taunt. Status effects (especially paralysis and burn,) can leave Slurpuff unable to do its job as well.

Third, you could just hit it hard. It's not bulky, and Belly Drum eats half of its health. If you can deal 50% in a hit (or less if you set up some sort of hazard,) you could just keep it from being able to use the move, or otherwise leave it in a position where it has very little health.

Beyond that, its coverage isn't spectacular. There are a handful of mons it can't hit neutrally, and the majority of them are not hit for SE damage, meaning a bulky enough mon can retaliate.

That's also why it's great to know your opponent's team and when a good time to set it up would be.
