Possible Undiscovered Easter Egg in Crystal Castles?

Post by PlatinumTriforce »

Hey guys. I know I haven't posted on here in a really long time and this topic is just coming out of nowhere but I felt like I needed to share this somewhere, and this is the only gaming-related forum that I'm a member of (actually the only forum ever I'm a member of).

First of all, if you don't know what Crystal Castles is, please refer to this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crystal_C ... ideo_game)

Alright, now on to what happened earlier tonight: My friend and I were playing some games and he needed to take a phone call, so in the interim I pulled out my computer, fired up MAME (arcade game emulator) and started playing some Crystal Castles, because my friend had mentioned it earlier and I needed something to do. I played a few games, and as soon as my friend got off the phone, I got another Game Over, only to see this screen: Image

(Imgur link here: http://imgur.com/iN0Z2a6)

At the time, I was trying to read it and forgot to take a screenshot of it. But I was able to read enough to where I could tell that the screen listed the game's developers, so I searched online for existing easter eggs that had been found, and I couldn't find anything like that. After that I played some more games with my friend for a while, then headed off to bed. But I couldn't get over the fact that I didn't get a screenshot of it, so I decided to play the game again and tried to imitate how I played it the time before as well as I could, and unbelievably, I actually triggered the screen again and took a screenshot of it.

So, first of all, please don't automatically assume that this is fake. There are absolutely absurd processes in some older video games that lead to easter eggs, and this might be one of those cases. Besides, if I were trying to fake this, why would I be sharing it to a community that I enjoy being a part of? Second, I know that this discovery is a super minor thing that doesn't even really matter, but I thought that some of you may find it interesting. I especially find it so because this was a game that I played for hours on end as a child. Third, I will definitely be looking into this more (and the next time I try it again I will see if I can record a video of it), but if you're interested in this and would like to help me out in finding why this easter egg occurs, you can try copying my general gameplay on that round as well as variations on it. I will write down how I played as well as the version of the ROM in the spoiler below:
Put in a coin. Started game. Went to back corner and jumped to use the shortcut that advances you ahead two worlds. Started level and killed a few gem-eaters by running into them. Died. Collected some more gems and got honey. Died. Collected last gem for bonus. Started next level and killed a few gem-eaters by running into them. Died. Collected some more gems and got honey. Died. Easter egg screen appeared. Entered high score (the first time the screen appeared my score was around 158,000; the second time it was around 157,000). After turning off the game both times those specific high scores were deleted while others that I had gotten a while back were still there. I checked the dip switches, cheats, etc. and none of them were on, so I don't think the screen was triggered by any of them. I was playing on Version 4 of the ROM.
Well, that's about it. Sorry for the monster post, but I feel like I needed to explain everything that I possibly can about this easter egg so that there's enough information out there that we can find out how to duplicate it. Thanks for reading.

Sorry to say, but you aren't the first to discover it. It has been mentioned on at least two sites:
here
and here (#29)
Sounds like no one really knows how to actually trigger it or if it's just random.

Huh, okay. I'm actually pretty glad that I'm not the first person to see this screen, because that would've been super weird. Thanks for the links to the sites documenting the credits, I appreciate it. I guess there's nothing more to say about this, then.
