The (hopefully first annual) New Year's Zelda Race

Post by raekuul »

So I'd gotten it into my head that I want to race Zelda 3 (A Link To The Past). After running it past Skypehaus, I got some positive feedback on the idea and Clam's been a big help with organizing this. So I want to open this up to whoever's interested.

The Rules are as follows:
  1. No Death Mountain Descent or anything else that allows you to bypass fighting a boss.
  2. No tool abuse (that is, no rewinding or save states).
Clam's directions on how to make this work wrote:1- Mute Game audio
2- Record Video and Mic only
2.5(optional)- Record audio in audacity if you want to correct it afterwards
3- Play the video game
Extra step if you did step 2.5- Sync the audacity audio with your video and delete the original audio
4- Export the video to a resolution of 480x854
5- Compress the video to a reasonable size
6- Upload it to MediaFire, Mega, Dropbox, whatever
7- Wait for video to see the light of day
As much as I would love to have everyone use BizHawk for this because accuracy and I'm more familiar with its video dumping tools, it's more than likely going to end up with everybody using the most recent Snes9x.

What we need in order to organize this is the following:
  1. Your Time Zone
  2. Your preference between Snes9x and BizHawk
  3. If you're interested in participating in the associated Skype Call
  4. If you'd rather the win condition be Beating Ganon in the Pyramid or just Beating Ganon's Tower
If you're interested in participating, feel free to practice.

1. Central European Time (CET)
2. Snes9x would be what I prefer, but BizHawk is what I pick here.
3. I figure it would be nonsense to partake in the call without talking.
4. Ganons Tower.

Do you have a rough idea of when this would be taking place?

Yeah, I figured it'd be around the start of the new year, but like new years day specifically? A couple days after? Maybe a week from now?

@Kapus: I'm hoping for Thursday and so far we've been thinking Thursday but if a different day works better then I'm open to suggestions.

480x854.
What even is that.
That's literally nothing.
That's about on par with just punching your numpad and going with whatever you typed.
I mean come on it's taller than it is wide.
Are you racing an iOS game?

I'm not the one who picked that resolution. Hell, I'm not even sure I can export to that resolution.

I mean come on, 854?
Such an arbitrary number.

i figured 640 by 480 would be the base resolution. Also this race is going to take a while. Be ready to set aside 3 to 5 hours since i have seen the other lets race zelda thing(With a added earthbound race.) so this might take awhile which is why compression is needed.

480*16/9=854
Also he pasted my pre-edited post which is why it's taller than wide because I inversed them the first time. I would've thought you could have figured that one on your own.

Yeah, I'll be recording input and then dumping video after. My monitor's 1280x1024 and I want to keep aspect ratio.

Okay. Why do you want to record a 4:3 game in 16:9 then?

I'm afraid I can't join today/tonight since my CPU is not compatible with my new mainboard. (and it kinda broke when I tried to fit it in (the CPU, not mainboard))

Console's fine, better if you can dump video from it

So it looks like we're all on for tonight ^^

The vast majority of leute don't care if we stop after Ganon's Tower or if we'll require the Pyramid for final completion time. Coin flip came up Pyramid, so everyone plan for getting Silver Arrows (and Lv 4 Sword)
