Favorite game, top 10 maybe? [/drama]

Post by TheFinalSentinel »

So, some of us can't decide, some of us flip-flop, and some us us are dead certain.
I'm curious. Collective Talkhaus, I ask you all what is your favorite game, top 10 maybe?

As for me, there is no doubt in my mind.

Persona 3: FES

I love JRPGS, first of all. I've played through it twice, once on Medium, once on Hard, and watched several Let's Plays/livestreams of it, blind and not. I am assaulted with feels every time.
However, I have yet to even touch The Answer, and am avoiding all knowledge about it like the plague. What I know boils down to this: It's hard as balls, something like Aigis has a sister unit or something.
The reason for this is to capture my first time through on video, be it a Let's Play or livestream. There were far too many memorable moments in my initial playthrough of The Journey that are now delegated to mere text and personal memory. Raging at the Sleeping Table, encountering a glitch where The Reaper somehow spawned IN THE STAIRS ROOM and I screeched like a little girl, the many tears shed at two specific parts that any of you who have played it will know... You get the idea.

I fucking adore tragedies. Image

Past that we have:
2: PMD: Explorers of Sky
3: Final Fantasy IX
$: Ōkami
5: LoZ: Twilight Princess
And that is my top V. Beyond that I'd have to look through my collection and do some comparisons.

For me it would be SpellForce: Order of the Dawn

My first game ever. No matter how long I didn't play it, whenever I'm comeback, I have as much fun as if I was playing it for the first time. Simple mechanics, great graphic, memorable and fun dialogs, texts that controlable characters are saying, the plot and the ending. But of all things I love this game for Blades, race of so called "creatures from the black steel". They are the best. And music is amazing too.

Yeah, I mean mine kinda changes with my mood and whatnot, but I have to say Super Mario World has done great at basically never getting old for me throughout my whole life.

It's probably from how much I've played of it/ROM hacks of it, but basically everything about the engine feels perfect to me. Like, I can not play it for several months, but coming back to it I never have to re-adapt to the control/feel of the game. It's basically become second nature to me now.

Fire Emblem Awakening

oh noes a modern game
whatever will we do

Yeah, well, I've had more fun with this game than any other in my life.
I've beaten it so many times, I've lost track~♥
Maybe its the fact that its combining Fire Emblem (which I love) and shipping (which is hilarious). Plus the character interactions are so god damn adorable. Especially Nowi, Tharja, Gregor and Noire. :)
Also, test tube breeding super soldiers is always a bonus.

OFF affected me the most. From the dialogue before the most climactic (not last) boss fight to the end of the game, I was in awe at how the game had managed to

trick me more than any other game ever had.

It changed my view on art and storytelling considerably. Even though it's old to me now, since I played it over a year ago, I still have really fond memories at how much I adored it's setting and characters. Almost all of my own art will likely have some trace of OFF in it's influence.
Well it is a decent hack but sometime its just too repetitif there no level that actually pop in your face and your like oh yeah that level they all ressemble themselves and just monster along the way.

Yeah... About that.

After having brainstormed furiously for a little over half an hour, I can't seem to decide which game is the is definitively the best. I made a list of games which was originally intended to be a top 10 to help organize myself, but then it grew into a general list of favorites numbering in the twenties.

Yeah.

Edit: That list is in the thirties now. Also, a fair amount of them come from the Game Boy Advance I've noticed.

Up until last year, I was struggling to pick from Ocarina of Time and Link to the Past, but that's when The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds happened. I love the streamlined experience mixed with being able to tackle dungeons in any order. There was only one part of the game I wasn't fond of, and that was getting to the Ice dungeon in Lorule with the whole cavern of moving blocks deal.

Everything else was pretty awesome. Great soundtrack, playing off nostalgia while also incorporating new elements into the series, a clever mechanic that isn't overexposed and makes things feel like "Paper Zelda", and just being fun for 99% of the time... This is my favorite game.

My favorite game of all time would have to be Suikoden 2. The gameplay, the story, the crisp, clean 2D graphics, the music... the whole package is just excellent. It has a great cast of characters, lots of hidden items to collect, some fun mini-games... and Luca Blight is among the best and most memorable RPG villains ever. The *only* downsides would be that the game has some very bizarre bugs, such as one recruit that randomly fails to actually go to your castle upon being recruited, to chests that mistakingly utilize the same flags (meaning you can only get one or the other), to improper item flags that make certain items permanently inaccessible unless you act in a very specific manner. And the translation is... lacking, right down to random bits of text being untranslated entirely.

Right behind it would be Final Fantasy 9. There's just something magical about that game. The first time I played it, I knew I was going to love it right away, as it has *the* best intro sequence I've ever seen in *any* RPG. The gameplay is fairly basic, and even though the ATB is a bit broken, the skill/equipment system is a lot of fun, and it's the first game in the FF series since 4 that actually gives each character complete individuality. I also loved the game's return to its more lighthearted high fantasy roots, featuring gorgeously-designed whimsical locales, demi-human races, and a whole lot less angst than what came before and after. It also features my favorite soundtrack in the series... as well as the biggest! It's *so* freaking huge that the whole thing couldn't even fit on *four* discs! Uematsu really outdid himself there. The world map theme in particular is my favorite song. It's just so amazingly, hauntingly beautiful.

......why not? If *you* don't like the genre, it doesn't mean *nobody else* should.

Sorry, that just came across as kinda... well, a bit rude. There are a lot of genres I don't play, but I can see the *appeal* of them, at least. I just get kinda snippy when I feel like someone is implying that I'm in the wrong for liking certain things.

Also: Can we *please* keep this thread as a celebration of our favorite games, *without* criticizing others for their picks? You don't have to like what we like. But you don't have to call us out for it, either, or express your undying hatred for a game someone loves, since that's going to lead absolutely nowhere except into a pointless fight. You're certainly not going to change *their* mind, they're certainly not going to change *yours*, so... yeah.

Don't get too mad over anything I imply. That post post wasn't meant to be hostile in the slightest. I do enjoy RPGS, but things like Final Fantasy for the most part aren't my cup of tea. I think this would be easier if we did a top ten list though.

Right behind OFF would be Zero Escape. The series as a whole, given that it's two (and eventually three) parts of a story, and they're story-based games, I don't see any real reason to split them up for this purpose.

Then Cave Story (again, like OFF, it's pretty old to me now given how long ago it was I played it), then Anodyne.

Probably some others I'm not thinking of.

I think the closest game I have to a favorite of all time would be Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door. I really loved Paper Mario as a kid, so when I found out there was a sequel, I was so excited that I literally counted down the days until it came out (I believe it was 108 days when I first found out about it), and when I finally got the game, it did not disappoint. I loved the game so much and played it so much, that at one point I memorized the stats for every single enemy in the game (I still remember most of them I believe). I also remember it being a really big inspiration in terms of my own game ideas back then, and in fact, I think a few of the characters I still plan to use were inspired by that game. It may not be the game that wowed me the most or thought was absolutely spectacular, but it still holds a special place in my heart. The original does as well, but I think this one does slightly more.

After banging my head against the wall thinking about it for a while, this is what came up.
In no particular order here are my favorite twenty-three games:

Spoilered because it makes the post look big
Super Mario Sunshine [GC]
Super Mario World [SNES]
Summon Night: Swordcraft Story [GBA]
Metroid Prime [GC]
Metroid Fusion [GBA]
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess [GC]
Pokemon Emerald [GBA]
Cave Story [PC/Wii] (I have this for both platforms)
Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal [PS2]
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow [GBA]
Terraria [PC]
Dragon Ball Z: Legacy of Goku 2 [GBA]
Kirby and the Amazing Mirror [GBA]
Final Fantasy X [PS2]
Final Fantasy XII [PS2]
Final Fantasy V [GBA]
Kingdom Hearts [PS2]
Disgaea: Hour of Darkness [PS2]
Sonic Adventure 2: Battle [GC]
Bomberman Tournament [GBA]
Boho Youyoumu [PC]
Mother 3 [GBA]
Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door [GC]
Why twenty-three? Because I seriously can't narrow it down further than that.

Way too difficult to pick any one favorite game, let alone an order for them.

  • Ys Origin (PC)
  • Ys I&II Chronicles+ (PC)
  • Ys III - Wanderers from Ys (SNES)
  • Ys: The Oath in Felghana (PC)
  • La-Mulana (the 2012 remake) (PC)
  • Audiosurf (PC)
  • Ultimate Doom/Doom II (PC)
  • Super Metroid (SNES)
  • Metroid Zero Mission (GBA)
  • Final Fantasy II (specifically from Final Fantasy I&II: Dawn of Souls) (GBA)
  • Zelda: A Link to the Past (SNES)
  • Zelda: Twilight Princess (GC)
  • Donkey Kong Country 2/3 (SNES)
  • Burnout Paradise (PC)
  • Super Meat Boy (PC)
  • Super Mario World (SNES)
  • Super Mario Bros. 3 (Super Mario All-Stars version) (SNES)
  • Fable: The Lost Chapters (PC)
  • Galactic Civilizations II (PC)
  • Copy Kitty (PC)
  • Dust: An Elysian Tail (PC)
  • Neverwinter Nights (PC)
  • VVVVVV (PC)
  • Kara no Shoujo (arguable depending on whether you're someone who considers visual novels games) (PC)
  • S.P.A.Z. (PC)
  • Terraria (PC)
  • Persona 3: FES Edition (PS2)
  • Mega Man 7 (SNES)
  • Disgaea 2 (PS2)
28 31 games and I know for sure I'm forgetting at least a few.

Yeah, I'm just gonna name a couple games per genre/console/whatever they overlap anyway (spoiler because long).
Jrpgs:
Chrono Trigger
Dragon Quest 3 (so far only played 1 2 and 3)
Final Fantasy 5 (so far only played 4 and 5)
Fire Emblem 7 (so far the only one I've played)
Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time
Mother 2 and 3, exactly tied
Pokemon MD Red Resque Team

Shmups:
Cho Ren Sha 68k
Crimzon Clover
Esp Ra.De. (so far the only Cave shooter I've played extensively)
Gokujo Parodius
Gunbird 2
Ikaruga
Layer Section
Pocky and Rocky
Touhou...8 9 and 10...I CAN'T

NES:
Castlevania 3
Gimmick!
Legend of Zelda
Metal Storm
Metroid
Ninja Gaiden 2
Shadow of the Ninja

SNES:
Castlevania 4
Kirby Superstar
Ninja Warriors
Mega Man X2
Super Metroid

Misc-ish:
Metroid Prime
Puyo Puyo
Shovel Knight
Star Wars: Empire At War
VVVVVV
Worms Armageddon
Zelda: Majora's Mask and Twilight Princess
So that's my...39? most beloved games at this point. Though at recent times I've been checking out more new games than ever so it's constantly a-changin'.

P.S. I care about Mario, he just doesn't come to mind when I think about what's most important/favorite/good/enjoyment/slash.

My favorite game of all time absolutely has to be Jet Moto 2: Championship Edition (partly because I have never actually played the black label version, but also because it's just ridiculously fast). The courses never seem to get old, it has wonderful game feel, and there's a sort of sensory overload on the controller (as opposed to the screen) since you have to use all the buttons if you want to get a really good time.

My favorite game is Guardian Heroes for the Sega Saturn. It has a rerelease on the 360 arcade for anyone who's interested.

Guardian Heroes is a 2D beat-em-up arcade-style game. I played it at some family's house in Georgia several times when I was younger, and it heavily affected a lot of my tastes for fantasy genres and game design. The game itself is beautiful. I love the character design (one dude wears a giant suit of spiked armor on his torso and JEANS with it while dual wielding katanas, it's simultaneously ridiculous and badass.) The game has wonderful enemy variety and outside of story mode you can play as any enemy you've fought, which leads to lots of multiplayer fun and silliness. I like the story, I like the combat system and planes of play, I LOVE the music... the entire thing is just wonderful. To this day I get a big goofy grin whenever I get a chance to play it.

Ill make a top 10 list sometime when I can type on my laptop.
