To be fair, at least in SMW the normal lava tiles don't have killboxes all the way to the top. In fact, I think the entire first tile might not actually do anything.DethBen wrote:Well that's odd about the lava though it's most likely still instant death.

I kinda like how at 25:10 they mention how the altered enemy sprites granted by the 30th anniversary Amiibo make it look "like a romhack"DethBen wrote:Day 3 of SMM.

Yeah I was surprised they were allowed to mention that!
On a semi-related note, is anyone else inordinately annoyed by the fact that they insistently refer to levels as "courses"?

I'm not sure why it should. Boards, courses, levels, maps, screens are all acceptable titles for 'the area of the game that mario runs and jumps through'. And which one is 'correct' really entirely just depends on your heritage in gaming.Leet wrote:On a semi-related note, is anyone else inordinately annoyed by the fact that they insistently refer to levels as "courses"?

...but who the hell actually calls them courses...? theyre levels. bonus levels. secret levels. sublevels. claim your levels. make a good level. level 1. vanilla level design contest.
maybe in other games its sometimes different, but in mario it has always been levels.
what im trying to say is i think nintendo forced them to call them courses.

Re: Official "Mario Maker"?
You're right, you are inordinately annoyed by that.
Some of the older games used screens (Stuff like Mario Bros, Donkey Kong). Some of the more recent ones obviously used courses. Heck, some of the games used 'World' as a title for them. Stage is common. There's no real consistency to it long term and getting so infuriated by it seems like...a waste of rage?
Level also has the conflagrating factor in Japanese: It's pretty exclusively tied to a meaning of 'character rank' (E.g. level in an "I am a level 14 Butt Wizard" sense).

The term is whatever you want it to be as long as it makes sense in context.Leet wrote:...but who the hell actually calls them courses...? theyre levels. bonus levels. secret levels. sublevels. claim your levels. make a good level. level 1. vanilla level design contest.

Re: Official "Mario Maker"?
I don't believe course is a term invented by Nintendo. Not sure what you're getting at here when you use those specific choice of words I've bolded. They use whatever terms they so choose to use. Course, Level, Stage. It really doesn't make any difference at all. Those are universally recognized terms in the world of gaming that all basically have the same meaning.Leet wrote:um its the othr way round .......

It doesn't hurt clarity for what they're talking about and there's legitimately no 'correct' nomenclature?Leet wrote:i literally just specified that i was trying to COMment on it why is everyone an issue with this auuugh ;;;;;
Mario isn't a scientific discipline where each piece of jargon has an incredibly specific technical meaning, y'know?

Re: Official "Mario Maker"?
Unrelatedly, I like how these all basically mean the same thing but you can still use them for categorization on game type. Like boards for stuff like pinball or Mario Part, courses for a sports game or something that's more of an obstacle course, maps I've generally seen used in FPSes instead of level, screens for games with minimal or no scrolling, etc. Not mentioned, but stage is also generally used for stuff like SSB and I think other fighting games.Xenesis wrote:Boards, courses, levels, maps, screens

This game looks awesome. Nintendo has added a ton of things to this game. I'm definitely picking it up. Though, I'm the not the biggest fan of the limited stage length.

Re: Official "Mario Maker"?
You can basically make 2 large stages in one especially since there are warp pipes. I don't know the extent of it, but I have a feeling you can have more then one warp pipe in an actual level, thus more then one extra sub-level, but that's just my speculation.Divemissile wrote:This game looks awesome. What I'm hoping for is for someone here with quite a bit of knowledge in the inner workings of all things Mario to acquire this game, and test all sorts of things one normally wouldn't think of testing, just to see how far Nintendo has really gone all out on this, and if they've truly thought of everything.

Re: Official "Mario Maker"?
In addition to what Horikawa said, Mario 64 also called them "course".
Also New Super Mario Bros. 2/Wii/U (and by extension Super Luigi U) and Super Mario 3D Land/World also say "course clear" when beating a stage and, unless I'm forgetting a game here, those are the 5 most recent Mario plattormers.

Re: Official "Mario Maker"?
Course is actually a bit more common with official games while level is more common in unofficial ones. SM64, the Wario Land series, I think Mario Land 2, and so on and so forth. Level sounds better but can be confusing if you can gain character levels while you traverse the game levels (and the Zelda series traditionally refers to them as Levels, at least through Oracle of Wuffing)
Re: Official "Mario Maker"?
I can't comment on the Wario games, but SML2 actually calls the individual levels "stages" (only in the manual though, they aren't named at all in-game) and the worlds are "zones" (Mario Zone, Tree Zone, Space Zone, etc).raekuul wrote:Course is actually a bit more common with official games while level is more common in unofficial ones. The word "level" sounds way nicer for some reason. I must have seen it used more often when reading about level design.

I like both really
"level" is fitting and descriptive enough, while "course" gives the vibe that the stage is meant to be a sort of attraction

Re: Official "Mario Maker"?
Course seems to be the Nintendo way, and level seems to be the general community way. Anyways, Zi wonder how the amiibo function will work with characters who already have 8-bit sprites, like Megaman and Samus (I have both of them). Will it use their already existing one, or will they make a custom one?
